On this day in 2002, Ayumi Hori of Moanalua became the first girl to win multiple individual OIA golf championships.

Hori shot a 76 at Turtle Bay’s Palmer course to win by four strokes. She also won the title as a freshman but slipped to fifth as a sophomore and lost in a playoff as a junior. She was an important part of three team titles, though, all under different head coaches.

Chase Chulakote of Kailua won the boys championship while Mililani took the team title on Bud Nakabayashi‘s 2-foot bogey putt in a playoff.

Mililani’s boys team title was protested by Kailua coach Ernie Foster, who said that one of his players was told to write down an incorrect score. Foster says that Kyle Kunioka was told to write down a nine instead of a seven after going into the water and taking an improper drop on the seventh hole.

OIA golf coordinator Duane Izumi said it was an unfortunate miscommunication.
