LIVE BLOG: OIA East Division wrestling championship finals

The OIA East Division wrestling championships conclude today with the finals at Farrington High School’s Kitamura Gym.

A live blog of the finals will follow below.

Wrestling season heats up in February with the OIA Division championships this weekend, followed by league championships in the OIA and ILH next Saturday and then the Texaco/HHSAA Wrestling State Championships Feb. 21-22 at Blaisdell Arena.

FINALS

GIRLS 97
Caitlin Yap (Maoanalua) vs. Cheville Gumban (Farrington)

Notes:
>> Yap with a takedown wihtin the first 30 seconds for a 2-0 lead.
>> Yap is in control, working for the pin.
>> Officials give Yap three points for a near takedown as the first period ends. It’s 5-0.
>> Yap goes ahead 7-0.

Final result:
>> Yap wins by fall, 2:56.

Brayden Kamimura (Kalani) vs. Dayne Takai (Moanalua)

Notes:
>> After a scoreless first period, Kimimura gets a takedown. Then with 15 seconds to go in the first, Takai ties it up 2-2 with a takedown of his own.
>> Kamimura is up 3-2 after an escape.
>> Still 3-2 headed to the second period.
>> The refs go to the scoreboard to make a change. All of a sudden, it’s Takai who is up by one point, 3-2. Must have been a mistake at the scoring table.
>> Kamimura strikes for a takedown with 44 seconds left in the third period for a 4-3 lead.

Final result:
>> Kamimura wins, 4-3.

Notes:
>> Asuncion comes out on fire and scores a takedown within the first 15 seconds.

Keane Escaba (Moanalua) vs. Jayce Kamimura (Kalani)

Notes:
>> Escaba up 5-2 heading to the second period — a takedown and a near fall.
>> With 1:35 left in the third, Kamimura fights back for a takedown. He trails 5-4.
>> Escaba scores with an escape with 40 seconds left in the third. But 10 seconds later, Kamimura gets a takedown and scores a near fall for an 8-6 lead. Refs are checking the score. They keep it at 8-6 for Kamimura with 27 seconds left.

Final result:
>> Kamimura wins, 8-7.

Notes:
>> With a takedown, Arakawa takes a 2-0 lead late in the first minute of the firset period.
>> Peralta ties it up 2-2 with a reversal late in the first period.
>> Arakawa back in the lead, 3-2, after an escape.
>> Still 3-2 after two periods.

Final result:
>> Arakawa wins by fall, 5:11.

>> It’s 11-0 with 0:49 to go.

>> Okura up 4-1 after an escape.
>> It’s an intense match and victory won’t be easy for either combatant. One minute left in the second period.
>> Still 4-1 going to the third period.
>> After a long delay, the refs make an adjustment and change the score to 3-1. Okura is ahead.
>> Okura goes ahead 6-1 with three straight one-point escapes.
>> Okura strikes for a takedown to make it 8-1 at the end of the second period.
>> The refs make another change. The score is changed to 6-2.
>> Okura with another takedown with 15 seconds to go, making it 8-2.
