Brooke Demetre arrived at the ‘Iolani Prep Classic with a well-earned reputation as a superb long-range stroke.

The Mater Dei junior left an impression with much more. Demetre closed out the Classic with nine points and eight assists in a 74-69 championship win over St. Mary’s on Saturday. She was named the tournament’s most valuable player, averaging 10 points per game and using her 6-foot-3 frame to protect the rim defensively.

Her teammates Meaali‘i Amosa, Caia Elisandez and Alyssa Frescas were also selected to the all-tournament team.

Dynamic swingman Amaya Oliver of St. Mary’s was honored as most outstanding player. Oliver had 21 points and 12 rebounds in a quarterfinal win over Konawaena, then poured in 23 points in a semifinal victory over South Medford (Ore.). She had 20 points and nine boards in the title-game loss to Mater Dei.

Oliver and Demetre guarded each other occasionally in the final. Demetre, a junior, is a commit to Stanford. Oliver has offers from St. John’s and several mid-majors on the West Coast, including Fresno State.

St. Mary’s freshman Brooklyn Perry, who scored 21 points in the final, was also named to the all-tourney team despite missing the first game. Tai Sherman was also selected.

‘Iolani, which placed third, landed three players: Jovi Lefotu, Lily Wahinekapu and Alexis Huntimer.

Rounding out the all-tourney team were Caiyle Kaupu of Konawaena, Malie Marfil of Kamehameha, and Sierra Logue and Toni Coleman of South Medford.
