No. 10 Lahainaluna 35, Roosevelt 0, FINAL

———–

FINAL: Lahainaluna 35, Roosevelt 0. Lunas advance to a fourth straight Division II title game looking for the four-peat. Roosevelt’s season ends in Lahaina for the second straight year.

1:10 4Q: Lunas in victory formation.

3:40 4Q: Ogata’s pass is picked by Nainoa Kalukukualani-Sales in the red zone. Sixth turnover tonight for the Riders.

6:45 4Q: Lunas go for it on fourth-and-1 from their 42 and are DENIED by Roosevelt. Rough Riders take over on downs.

8:00 4Q: Some of the Lunas’ reserve backs getting some work now. Storer still out there. Clock expiring quickly.

10:00 4Q: Tihada up to 27 carries for 162 yards tonight. Storer is 9-for-13 for 202 yards with 4 TDs, 0 INT right now.

12:00 4Q: Lunas ball on their 8. Still running clock territory on the scoreboard.

END 3Q: Shepherd Kekahuna takes a wildcat snap, runs right … and has nowhere to go. Third quarter expires with Roosevelt turning the ball over on downs.

0:56 3Q: Illegal block on Lunas sets up third-and-goal from the 4 for Roosevelt coming after a timeout.

2:30 3Q: Scott Chung with a great grab against two DBs sets up first-and-goal for Roosevelt.

4:51 3Q: Ogata completes a ball to Devin Naihe. Riders officially out of negative passing territory. Ogata just slung another completion, to Mitchell Camacho. Roosevelt looking to get on the board, now in Lunas territory.

6:26 3Q: Meanwhile, Lahainaluna keeps feasting through the air. Storer goes deep to a WIDE OPEN Devon Sa-Chisholm for 59 yards. Kaihulali Casco with the extra point and it’s 35-0. We’re officially in mercy rule/running clock territory.

6:49 3Q: Roosevelt has still completed only one pass, for negative-4 yards. No team in HHSAA history has had a negative passing-yardage game.

7:08 3Q: Sky Ogata has a man in the middle … Kaleikau bobbles it and it’s NEARLY intercepted by the Lunas. As it is, it’s fourth-and-9 and Roosevelt punts it away.

7:49 3Q: Storer tosses it up high and the kicker/receiver Brian Sandoval makes an acrobatic grab in double coverage. Sandoval tacks on his own extra point, and it’s 28-0 Lunas.

7:56 3Q: Isaac Kaleikau down hurt or Roosevelt. He’s eventually able to get off.

9:30 3Q: Kai Bookland has four catches for 100 yards. Lunas marching into Roosevelt territory.

8:31 p.m.: Play has resumed.

8:27 p.m.: An AED was spotted being brought from the sideline. The ambulance is on the field now. The official has been loaded into the ambulance. Scattered applause and plenty of concern among the fans here.

10:55 3Q: It looked like it might’ve been a heart attack for the ref, who collapsed with no one touching him. Parademics, who were standing by at the game, are coming onto the field.

10:55 3Q: Concern for one of the referees, who just collapsed on the field. This could be bad.

12:00 3Q: Lunas ball to begin the third quarter. Tihada up to 20 carries in short order, just about to crack the century mark in yardage.

HALF: Roosevelt gets up to the 32 and lets the clock expire. The Rough Riders want no part of any more of that accursed, fumble-filled half. They go into intermission down 21-0.

0:46 2Q: UNREAL. Roosevelt fumbles the ensuing kickoff (this time it’s Shepherd Kekahuna … no one can hold onto it). Tysyn Estrella recovers for the Lunas and it’s FIVE lost fumbles this half for Roosevelt. On the very next play, Storer heaves it up for Bookland for a 28-yard touchdown. They hook up for touchdowns 13 seconds apart. What a blow for Roosevelt going into halftime.

0:59 2Q: This time, Roosevelt pays for the turnover. Esekielu Storer heaves it long for a wide open Kai Bookland for 52 yards. Great play, he caught that one fully in stride. No one was gonna catch him. XP is good by Sandoval, 14-0 Lunas.

1:20 2Q: That was the fourth lost fumble of this half by Roosevelt, including the misplayed punt. Yikes.

1:56: Man … Camacho with another nice run … but Roosevelt really has to work on its ball security. Camacho has the ball ripped free in the red zone by Brysen Rickard, and recovered by the Lunas’ Matai Mataafa. Just brutal for the Riders.

11 forced, 42 recover

2:49: Roosevelt up to near midfield … Mitchell Camacho has a nice run up the gut and Roosevelt has it at the Lunas 42. Chunk yardage time for the Riders.

3:45: Micah Kukahiwa with a nice pick up on third-and-4. resh set of downs at the 31 for Roosevelt.

4:34: It’s third-and-15 from the 17 for the Lunas … Storer goes incomplete. It’s Brian Sandoval going for a 34-yard field goal … it goes through the uprights, but the Lunas weren’t set. They called timeout first. On his try coming out of the timeout, the lefty Sandoval goes wide left. Roosevelt amazingly still within one score.

4:46: It’s a HUGE special teams gaffe by Roosevelt as the return man allows the line-drive punt to hit his leg. Kai Bookland pounces on it for the Lunas at the Roosevelt 13. It was Isaac Kaleikau back for Roosevelt.

6:45: Tihada is up to 17 carries for 87 yards. That gives him the state tournament records for both career carries and career rushing yardage to go with his career rushing touchdowns in states.

8:29: Christian Keawe’s punt is downed at the Lunas 9. Feels like a pretty big missed opportunity for the Riders on that last possession.

9:30: Ogata looks, shuffles … but doesn’t get rid of it and Matai Mataafa comes up with a solo sack, a loss of 10. On the next play, Ogata scrambles and it’s a wobbly one, caught by a Luna, but out of bounds. Sets up fourth-and-20.

9:50 2Q: Esekielu Storer in at quarterback for the Lunas … he has a man deep … heaves it … too far. It’s a mishandled snap on the ensuing punt … and Lahainaluna’s burly punter Hookipa Sakalia has to try to scramble. He’s well short of the first down, and he picks up an unsportsmanlike penalty to boot. Roosevelt in GREAT position at the Lunas 26.

11:26 2Q: Tihada fumbles in the backfield, but he’s able to recover it. Difference in the game so far has been Roosevelt losing two of its three fumbles and Lahainaluna recovering its own two.

END 1Q: Lunas on the march at their 40 as the first period ends. Three-time defending state champs looking the part so far.

1:55 1Q: Roosevelt has third-and-7 from midfield … big play here. It’s a Sky Ogata keeper for 5 yards. Fourth-and-2 … punting unit comes on for Roosevelt. It’s a touchback.

3:11 1Q: Ensuing kickoff goes out of bounds. Roosevelt has it on its 35.

3:11 1Q: Tihada extends his state tournament all-purpose touchdowns record with the 16th of the senior’s career. Brian Sandoval with the extra point and it’s 7-0 Lunas.

3:11 1Q: Lunas have first-and-goal from the 1 after Derek Perez takes a handoff on some misdirection. He fumbles but a teammate recovers it at the 1. Joshua Tihada does the rest, power run up the middle for the 1-yard score.

5:46 1Q: Joshua Tihada can move, man. Nineteen yards weaving up the middle and Lunas have it with some fresh downs on the Roosevelt 35.

6:47 1Q: The bad case of the fumblies continues for Roosevelt. Shepherd Kekahuna fumbles after getting wrapped up and taking a hit. Ekolu Mathias forced it and Matthew Rabinno pounced on it. Lunas ball at their 35.

8:00 1Q: Roosevelt has fourth-and-7 at the 31. Sky Ogata checks down, pulls it, and picks up 12 yards on a keeper. Big play there.

8:21 1Q: Horsecollar tackle called on the Lunas and the Rough Riders are in business at the Lahainaluna 34.

8:31: Camacho begins to redeem himself for the fumble with a big run up the middle. Roosevelt at its 45 on the 21-yard pickup.

8:40: Roosevelt dodges a bullet. Nainoa Irish goes incomplete to Devon Sa-Chisolm, a little high on the throw. Roosevelt takes over at its 24.

9:23: 1Q: Lunas have fourth-and-9 at the Roosevelt 29 … Roosevelt goes offside. Now it’s just fourth-and-4.

10:13: Joshua Tihada with a nice run around the left side … but there’s a flag. It’s a hold and it’s coming back.

11:41 1Q: Nainoa Kulukulualani-Sales tackles Mitchell Camacho after a short gain, Camacho fumbles, and the Luna recovers it himself. Lunas have it in Roosevelt territory, immediately.

12:00 1Q: Lahainaluna kicks off to visiting Roosevelt. Rough riders going left to right. Shepherd Kekahuna with a great return to the Riders’ 48. He fumbles but the Riders recover.
