Down by one point, Punahou patiently worked the ball against Kahuku’s zone before junior Tati Burciaga-Reyes splashed a corner 3 with 1.2 seconds left. Punahou edged Kahuku 41-39 and finished 3-1 at the Matsumoto Law Group Black & Gold Classic.

The Konawaena Wildcats began the week with eight players, but after two injuries, were down to six players in the second half against ILH powerhouse Kamehameha. Caiyle Kaupu sank a jump hook in the lane with 5 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 44-43 win over Kamehameha at the Matsumoto Law Group Black & Gold Classic. Kaupu finished with 18 points.

What kind of defense is this? It’s the worst defense ever. First it looks like a 2-3 zone. But, the guard on the ball side cuts through the key and end up on the other side between the corner and wing. The ball side defender on the bottom with the headband runs after her. Who does that?

So it must be a box and 1 maybe. No it isn’t. Then the ball gets swung to the opposite side. 2 Kahuku defenders are now on the same player since Headband player ran to the one side, overloading it with defenders.

Ball gets passed to corner, and the corner player dribbles up to the wing. Then Kahuku has to scramble, and a Kahuku defender has to run to the other side bottom block to get some sort of spacing and balance.

Eventually the Punahou girl hits a 3.

This happens due to poor spacing and lack of defensive principles.

It all started with headband running to the other side of the court. That threw off their entire defensive spacing. If the coach taught that, then what is she doing. If the player did that on their own, what in the world are they thinking.

Dun Dun Dun. The headband strikes again.

Wow, this player is truly making an impression on you.
