No. 1 Saint Louis 21, No. 2 Punahou 14, Final

———-

8:54: Sagapolutele’s desperation pass falls incomplete and the Crusaders HANG ON. 21-14 is your final.

8:51: Nishigaya takes a handoff and gets stopped at the Punahou 14 with 8 seconds left.

8:50: Saint Louis calls its final timeout on fourth down at the Punahou 14 with 12 seconds left. What do the Crusaders do here? It’s offense is taking the field.

8:46: de Laura drops back and hits Skyes, who is downed at the 14. CLUTCH. That should do it.

8:45: Saint Louis calls another timeout.

8:42: Punahou gets the stop AND forces Nishigaya out of bounds. The Crusaders are staying on the field but call a timeout first.

8:40: Punahou now burns its second timeout with 2:19 left as Saint Louis faces third-and-6. Huge play upcoming.

8:37: Saint Louis is driving slowly and methodically, now down to the Punahou 46 with 2:47 left and counting.

8:32: Punahou will punt again after a SACK by Masaniai. Saint Louis gets the ball back, for real this time, from their own 16 with 5:06 left. Both teams have all three timeouts.

8:29: Scratch that. FIRST DOWN PUNAHOU after an illegal participation call from Saint Louis, Buffanblu have the ball at the Crusaders 37.

8:27: Punahou punts after its drive stalls near midfield. Saint Louis gets the ball back with 7:13 left, starting from its own 18.

8:19: Punahou’s defense comes through again, forcing another Punahou three-and-out led by a key sack of de Laura. The Buffanblu get the ball back on their own 28 with 9:26 left.

8:16: Punahou goes for it on fourth-and-1 at the Saint Louis 42 but gets STUFFED for a loss with 11:30 left in the fourth.

8:12: Punahou will start at midfield after Terrell’s nice return.

FOURTH QUARTER

8:10: TOUCHDOWN SAINT LOUIS. de Laura scrambles for a 12-yard score as time expires in the third. Napuunoa’s PAT is good and the Crusaders lead 21-14 heading into the fourth quarter.

8:05: Saint Louis gets the momentum right back, forcing a three-and-out and punt. The Crusaders will start from their own 46 with 1:22 left in the third.

8:03: All the momentum is swinging towards the Buffanblu. Saint Louis goes three-and-out again and punts. Punahou starts from its own 22 with 2:16 to go in the third and a chance to take its first lead of the game.

8:00: de Laura finds Nishigaya for an 11-yard gain, but he goes down briefly in what appears to be a cramp. He got back up quickly, though, which is a good sign.

7:58: Touchback. Saint Louis from its own 20. How do the Crusaders respond?

7:57: TOUCHDOWN BUFFANBLU. Sagapolutele finds Koa Eldredge for a 6-yard score and Maretzki nails the game-tying extra point. 14-14 with 4:12 left in the third.

7:52: HERE COMES PUNAHOU. de Laura is SACKED at his own 10 on third down as the Crusaders go three-and-out. After the punt, Punahou starts at the Saint Louis 34 with 5:53 left in the third.

7:48: Touchback on the kickoff. Saint Louis to start from its own 20.

7:47: HERE WE GO AGAIN. Sagapolutele finds Raydan Kiaainia-Caires for a five-yard score. Quinn Maretzki’s PAT is good and the Saint Louis lead is now 14-7 with 7:19 left in the third. We have a ballgame.

7:37: A holding call kills Saint Louis, who goes three-and-out and punts. The Buffanblu start their first possession of the second half from their own 36 with 9:56 left in the third quarter.

7:33: The second half is underway. After the kickoff, Saint Louis will start from its own 20 after a touchback.

THIRD QUARTER

7:25: It should be reiterated that the Saint Louis defense has really come to play, even without arguably its most productive player this season in Herbig. Masaniai has answered the bell. Sagapolutele and Stanley McKenzie have been there to stuff Terrell to the tune of five rushes for -8 yards thus far. Even star linebacker Jordan Botelho is being used on kickoff coverage. Cal Lee‘s boys are not holding anything back.

HALFTIME

7:15: Punahou goes deep on the next play but it’s PICKED OFF by Bronz Moore. Saint Louis then goes for a Hail Mary but it’s picked off by Eli Thompson as time expires. Saint Louis takes a 14-0 lead into halftime and will receive the second half kickoff when play expires.

7:14: The Crusaders come out of the timeout and decide to kick it, but Napuunoa’s kick is WIDE from 21 yards out. Saint Louis still leads 14-0.

7:13: Punahou calls its final timeout of the half and now both teams don’t have any. The scenario: Fourth-and-goal for Saint Louis from the Punahou 4, and the Crusaders are going for it with 18 seconds left in the first half. Huge play coming up.

7:10: Punahou calls a timeout after two chunk plays that land the Crusaders at the Buffanblu 10 with 54 seconds left in the first half.

7:05: Saint Louis burns its final timeout of the half facing third-and-2 on the Punahou 13 with 2:07 left.

7:02: The Buffanblu can’t recover from that and will punt on fourth down. Saint Louis will get the ball back on its own 5 after a nice punt from Terrell with 3:29 left in the half.

7:00: Terrell appears to have broken away for a 52-yard touchdown, but it’s called back due to holding. A huge blow to Punahou.

6:56: Punahou from its own 33 after the kickoff return.

6:55: TOUCHDOWN CRUSADERS. de Laura runs a nifty option play, faking a pitch to Nishigaya before he actually gives it up to him for a 4-yard touchdown. Napuunoa’s PAT is good and Saint Louis has doubled its lead to 14-0 with 6:01 left in the first half.

6:50: The Buffanblu call timeout with Saint Louis having a fresh set of downs at the Punahou 13, 7:38 left in the first half.

6:46: Three-and-out for Punahou. After the punt, Saint Louis will start from the Buffanblu 41 with 8:42 left in the half.

6:44: The Crusaders go for it on fourth-and-16 and come up JUST short. Punahou takes over with 9:38 left in the first half.

6:42: Saint Louis calls another third-down timeout, this time facing third-and-16 on the Punahou 31 with 9:53 left in the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

6:37: Sonny Masaniai was one of the players asked to take on a bigger role during star linebacker Nick Herbig‘s one-game suspension, and he’s answered the call with a big sack. Punting from its own end zone, Punahou places one to the Saint Louis 37 as time expires in the first quarter. The Crusaders lead 7-0 in a tight one so far.

6:33: The Crusaders take the conservative approach, handing it off to Koali Nishigaya for an 8-yard gain, well short of the sticks. After the punt, the Buffanblu will start from their own 10 with 1:43 left in the first.

6:30: Saint Louis calls its first timeout facing third-and-20 from its own 45 following a de Laura sack. This would be a huge stop for the Buffanblu defense considering how they started.

6:25: The Saint Louis defense came to play, forcing a three-and-out and punt. Crusaders will start at the Punahou 45 after the fair catch, 4:00 left in the first quarter.

6:22: Punahou looks to respond from its own 10.

6:19: TOUCHDOWN SAINT LOUIS. Quarterback Jayden de Laura put on a clinic that drive, completing all four of his passes for 46 yards then finishing it off with a 22-yard run into the end zone. Lason Napuunoa‘s PAT is good and the Crusaders lead 7-0 with 5:35 left in the first.

6:14: Punahou picks up a first down but Anthony Sagapolutele, cousin of Buffanblu quarterback John-Keawe Sagapolutele, stuffs running back Vincent Terrell on third down. Saint Louis ball on its own 30 after the punt.

6:09: Christopher Paige takes the opening kickoff to the Punahou 19.

FIRST QUARTER

6:06: Saint Louis wins the toss and will defer to the second half. Punahou will receive to begin this game.

6:00 p.m.: Here we go. We still have about five minutes to go until kickoff but both teams looked very focused and determined during warm-ups. It should be a great game.

2 QBs from Tiltons QB Stable battling it out! Some of the best QBs in the Open Division.

  2. ilh November 1, 2019 8:56 pm

The 2 top teams in the State, too bad only one can advance to the States, Congratulaions CRUSADERS.

  3. Poniboy November 1, 2019 9:06 pm

Good game tonight!! Go Saints!! Too bad Punahou is done for the season. They deserve to be in the finals!!

  4. Recruited not Rooted November 1, 2019 9:13 pm

Sitting here in the stadium shaking my head. Too bad somebody had to lose. More worse, too bad the second best team in the state won’t be going to the playoffs. You telling me that the possibility of Saint Louis Punahou III wouldn’t be great. Somethings gotta change. Hats off to Punahou and all the kids out there tonight, that was fun.

  5. 88 November 1, 2019 9:13 pm

The Crusaders should be crowned State Champs after tonight’s win. If you go undefeated in the Open Div. you should automatically be crowned Champion. They deserve it.

  6. Heavy November 1, 2019 9:31 pm

Nah no need see Punahou lose 3 times to the same team.

Interesting how St. Louis seems to keep Punahou in the game both last time and this time. Oh well on to States!!!

  7. nothing but the truth November 1, 2019 9:42 pm

I saw the Kaimuki and Damien running back play this year, and I know how good the Waipahu running back is. But this running back from Punahou, Terrell, is the best in the State. Saw him play four times this year. He is scary fast and quick. Hope he gets a chance to play D1 next year.

  8. MiliLouis November 1, 2019 10:05 pm

    TD called back was bogus.
How do they call that holding a d not the other 25 times th StL OL held?

Geez, refs with the refs agian……

  9. MiliLouis November 1, 2019 10:06 pm

*Geez, refs with the assist again…

Good game Puns. With 3 weeks to prepare and get healthy I think the men of Kaleapohaku make it 4 I’m a row although I believe Kahuku swill keep the championship game close. Can’t remember the last time the saints had 4 senior Wrs and a senior Qb. Puns have a young team and I expect them to get at least 1 ship in the next 3 years.

  11. ilh November 1, 2019 10:11 pm

Why MiliLouis, you rather Play Punahou, more chance than against Saint Louis, cheeeuuuu, why don’t you be a referee

  12. nothing but the truth November 1, 2019 10:18 pm

#6 you took the words right out of mouth! Last game was fumbles. This time it was holding penalties or QB sacks at the worst possible time, even an illegal participation penalty that gave Punahou a first down on fourth down. Unbelievable.

  13. Swell November 1, 2019 10:18 pm

Not so fast St. Louis needs to make it past Mililani. Not that they won’t, but can’t sleep on them.

    Same with Kahuku versus Campbell.

    Good luck in states.

  14. ??? November 2, 2019 12:42 pm

All you cry babies crying Punahou should be in states but NONE of you saying Damien should be in as the 2nd best ILH DI team? “Ahh C’MON…

  15. MiliLouis November 2, 2019 6:34 pm

    @???

Is Damien ranked #2 in the D1 division?

Folks are saying Punahou should be in because they are ranked #2 in the Open division and not just in the ILH.

Kahuku and Mililani are really no match for StL this year. In the end, only Punahou wil have given them tough close games.

  16. ??? November 4, 2019 1:52 pm

Their complaining the ILH only has one slot!
That’s why you Separate ILH from OIA “Recruiting” or you let all Open team LEGALLY recruit to balance out the competition! In reality, STL & Punahou should play Gorman, Bosco & Mater Dei EVERY year.
