Bryce Kaneshiro named new Aiea athletic director

Bryce Kaneshiro‘s working colors are changing. Instead of wearing red, expect to see some green in his outfits.

Kaneshiro, 47, took over as the Aiea athletic director Oct. 7, replacing Blake Moritsugu, who retired.

It’s a switch from his post as AD at Waialua. That North Shore school is in the process of hiring a new AD.

“For me, it’s coming home,” Kaneshiro said Monday morning. “It’s where it began for me.”

Kaneshiro played soccer and baseball for Na Alii and graduated from Aiea in 1990.

“When I tell kids that I graduated in ’90, they’re like ‘whoa,’ ” Kaneshiro said.

Kaneshiro played Little League and AYSO in Aiea. As a varsity athlete, he played in the outfield in baseball and was a defender and midfielder in soccer.

“In 1989 and 1990, we won the OIA West in soccer,” he said. “My sophomore year, we were JV co-champs in baseball.”

He spent seven full years plus this fall season as the Waialua AD. Before that, he was an assistant AD and boys soccer coach under Darren Camello at Kapolei.

“I absolutely loved being there at Waialua,” Kaneshiro said. “But I can’t pass up an opportunity to come back to my alma mater.

“My hope is just to build athletes into better people and teach them the pride that goes along with playing for your school and the dedication that comes with it. Athletics is a tool to make people better people.”
