Squib kick is taken by an up man, time runs out, Pac-Five is 5-3. Someone get this team a state tournament berth.

Pearl City’s third snap on the next series, low pass juggled by Cruz-Ameperosa and picked off by Pac-Five’s Matthew Miura. Pac-Five ball at the PC 39, :54 left. WOH. Hedani completes three passes in a row, ball at the 4 with :14 left. They send Rufino on the field to try a field goal now. No, wait, Pac-Five switches out and sends the offense back on the field and they have no time outs. Hard to figure this out. Pearl City calls its second time out. That kinda saves Pac-Five. Maybe Pac-Five was going to throw a safe corner pass. Incomplete pass, :10 left, second and goal. No kicker? Now it’s a fade to Tam, who is covered tightly and hauls the high lob in at the right corner. Touchdown with :04 left and Pac-Five takes the lead. What a comeback. PAC-FIVE 28, PEARL CITY 21, Q4, :04.

Pearl City drives to the 44 of Pac-Five, stalls out, punt. Punt return has a hold. Pac-Five starts at its 5, and three plays later, Hedani connects with Canute on a sideline route and he BLAZES past the secondary for a 78-yard TD. WOWW. Giovanni Rufino’s PAT kick ties it at 21 with 1:32 left in regulation.

Pac-Five goes three-and-out. Punt fair caught at the Pearl City 40, 5:21 left.

Chargers with a solid, methodical drive, but Canyon’s pass is batted at the line of scrimmage and Laitin Bradley of Pac-Five picks it off. Wolfpack ball at its 30, huuuuuge break with 7:02 left.

The third quarter ends with Pac-Five at its 42-yard line. Hedani is sacked by Mark Moreno, a DB who wears No. 98. He’s 5-9 and 180 pounds, but from a distance looks like a lineman. The drive stalls at the Pearl City 48, punt is downed at the PC 14.

Huge stop by the defense in orange. Canyon had Juan Vargas open in the left corner of the end zone, but underthrew it and sophomore DB Kama Espinda came up with the pick. He returns it to the Pac-Five 17 with 53 seconds left in the third period.

Pac-Five bounces off the canvas with an eight-play, 63-yard scoring drive. Ian Canute hauls in a 10-yard play-action pass from Hedani to bring the Wolfpack within one score. PEARL CITY 21, PAC-FIVE 14, Q3, 6:46.

Pac-Five opens the second half with the hall at its 49 after Pearl City tries a pooch kick in the onside area. The Wolfpack drive to the 16, and then Kong loses the ball on a left-side run, and Pearl City DB Gabriel Parrish returns the fumble 82 yards for a touchdown. Huge. PEARL CITY 21, PAC-FIVE 7, Q3, 10:10.

The Chargers start from their own 15 after a penalty on the kickoff return, and Canyon directs them on a nice drive, with completions of 33 and 28 yards to Gleason. Ball is at the Wolfpack 7-yard line. However, Canyon leaves the game and is replaced by the safety, Cruz-Ameperosa, who fumbles two under-center snaps in a row with less than 1 minute left in the half. The second fumble is recovered by Pac-Five, which takes a knee and that’s the half.

The teams exchange three-and-out punts. Pac-Five’s fourth series begins on its 35 with 8:07 left in the second quarter. Hedani with a rainbow spiral to the far sideline, where sophomore slotback Chad Schmidt makes an over-the-shoulder catch. Easily the catch of the game so far. First down, Wolfpack. Pearl City jumps offside for the second time in this possession. LB/RB Joshua Arcayena steps into the backfield and plows up the middle for another Wolfpack first down. Ball is at the Pearl City 18, time out Pac-Five with 3:17 to go in the first half. Next play after the time out, Hedani with a perfect back-shoulder toss to Tam, an 18-yard TD. PEARL CITY 14, PAC-FIVE 7, Q2, 3:09.

Chargers ball at midfield. Second play of the drive, handoff to Ali‘i Gaspar up the middle and he rockets untouched to paydirt, a 52-yard TD. Gaspar is a treat to watch, good acceleration and nice vision from sideline to sideline. That one was basic A/B gap, though. Starting to wonder if Pac-Five has lost its mojo. Like I mentioned earlier, they have no post-season despite having a solid 4-3 record. They’ll have to dig deep today. PEARL CITY 14, PAC-FIVE 0, Q2, 9:39.

Hedani drops the shotgun snap, recovers and it’s a 1-yard loss. Wolfpack punt after the three-and-out, and it’s Pearl City ball on the fair catch at the 50. It’s been a really strange scenario that the kids at Pac-Five had had to endure, being told early in the year that there is no possibility of a state berth. Yet, here they are, 4-3 against OIA competition, and no hope after the regular season.

The first quarter closes with Pac-Five at its 20. The ‘Pack went backwards after a holding call to its 9 to begin the drive.

Missed FG try by Pac-Five gives Pearl City the ball for its second series with 5:42 left in the first quarter. Pearl City very strong on this drive as QB Makanaokalani Canyon connects for four completions, and despite a sack, the Chargers hit paydirt. Canyon throws a backwards pass (lateral) to Isaiah Cruz-Ameperosa, who tosses an easy 21-yard TD pass to Joshua Gleason near the left corner of the end zone. Coach Robin Kami up to his bag of tricks today. PEARL CITY 7, PAC-FIVE 0, Q1, :40.

Chargers on the move. A pass from Chase Hedani to the end zone for Kaala Tam looks like a TD, but is peeled away by the DB, incomplete pass. The Wolfpack hand the ball five straight times to Micah Kong after he caught a pass for 11 yards. The drive stalls and the ‘Pack miss a 29-yard field-goal attempt. Seeing a lot of consecutive handoffs to running backs in recent weeks. Kong looked bushed by the end of that series.

Pearl City three-and-out, then the punt snap sails over the head of the punter. It’s a 12-yard loss, and Pac-Five ball at the Pearl City 37.
