GAME NIGHT 9/6: Damien/Castle

8:54: Damien takes a few last kneels to close this thing out to improve to 5-0, its best start in school history since 2015. Castle drops to 1-3.

8:50: Chazz Tom scores on a 4-yard rush for Castle. Cheydon Costa‘s PAT is good and Castle cuts the deficit to 41-13 with 1:27 left.

8:46: Castle calls a timeout facing a first-and-goal at the Damien 1 with 2:09 left.

8:35: Kyle Kinney jumps a bubble screen and takes it to the house for a 37-yard pick-six for Damien. Souza’s kick is good and the Monarchs now lead 41-6 with 8:43 left.

8:31: Castle gets the ball back on its own 5 after a nice punt by Damien.

FOURTH QUARTER

8:25: End of the third. Damien leads 34-6 and has the ball at the Castle 48. Logan Lacio now in at QB for the Monarchs.

8:20: Holtz’s day appears to be done as Duke Hoohuli enters at QB for Damien. The Monarchs punt after picking up a first down but not another with 3:30 left in the third.

8:15: Castle was driving all the way to the red zone before fumbling at the Damien 15, which the Monarchs recover with 5:21 left in the third.

7:58: Holtz keeps it on a read option and goes 28 yards to the house. But, he’s called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty after looking back at the defenders he ran past before he got into the end zone. Damien stretches its lead to 34-6 after Souza’s extra point, 9:17 left in the third. It appears that Holtz is doing push-ups on the sidelines, as ordered by his coaches as punishment.

7:53: Castle goes three-and-out again. Damien gets the ball back on its own 21, 10:11 left in the third.

7:49: A nice return from Kala Matthews puts Castle on the Damien 44 with 11:32 left in the third.

7:47: TOUCHDOWN DAMIEN. These Monarchs sure know how to capitalize on turnovers. Sulu takes a handoff 36 yards TO THE HOUSE. Souza’s PAT is good and Damien leads 27-6 with 11:39 left in the third.

7:45: First play from scrimmage in the second half is a FUMBLE on a bad snap, recovered by Damien on the Castle 36 with 11:47 left in the third quarter.

7:45: Castle starts the second half from its own 44 after a nice return.

THIRD QUARTER

7:27: Castle falls on a bad snap and that’s your half. The Knights trail 20-6 at the break but will receive to start the third.

7:22: That penalty was a total game changer. Damien takes full advantage of it and marches down the field. Iaea with his second score of the day, this time from two yards out. Souza’s PAT is no good but Damien’s lead is now 20-6 with 24 seconds left in the first half.

7:17: Damien picks up two quick first downs but then Holtz throws three straight incompletions. Souza shanks a punt, but Castle is flagged for running into him. First down Damien at the Castle 36 with 1:23 left in the first half.

7:13: Castle picks up a nice first down but not much else can materialize for the Knights’ offense at the moment. A punt gives Damien the ball back on their own 25 with 1:58 left in the first half.

7:01: Touchdown Damien. Apereamo Sulu takes a pitch seven yards to pay dirt. Souza’s PAT is good and the Monarchs extend their lead to 14-6 with 4:29 to go in the first half.

6:57: Castle punts from its own end zone after Damien stops the Knights for a couple of negative gains. Damien has prime field position after the punt at the Castle 41 with 6:19 left in the half.

6:54: Damien has another big play negated by a penalty and is forced to punt. Castle gets the ball on its own 10 with 8:40 left in the half.

6:44: TOUCHDOWN CASTLE. Kila Kaio finds EJ Dydasco in stride for a 54-yard score. Ian Rivera‘s PAT is wide left. Damien still leads 7-6 with 10:20 left in the second.

6:42: Damien briefly contemplates going for it on fourth-and-4 from the Castle 49 but decides to punt, or so it seems. Iaea takes the snap and takes it himself but is stopped JUST short of the sticks. Castle gets the ball back on its own 47 with 10:30 left in the second quarter.

SECOND QUARTER

6:38: Castle punts again and has yet to gain a first down. After the punt, Damien has a fresh set of downs at the Castle 44. End of the first.

6:34: It’s Castle’s turn to step up on D, forcing a Damien three-and-out. After the Monarchs punt, the Knights start from their own 36 with 1:06 left in the first.

6:29: Damien’s defense came to play. The Monarchs make the Knights go three-and-out again and will start from their own 26 with 2:52 left in the first.

6:24: River Iaea takes the handoff on fourth-and-1 from the Castle 16 and bursts up the middle for a touchdown. Christian Souza‘s PAT is good and Damien leads 7-0 with 4:43 left in the first.

6:18: Castle quickly goes three-and-out. After the punt, Damien gets the ball back on its own 47 with 8:15 left in the first quarter.

6:15: The Monarchs appear to score on a 40-yard pass from Jake Holtz to Makanale’a Meyer but it’s brought back by a holding call. Damien can’t get the yardage back and punts for a touchback with 10:01 left in the first.

6:08: Damien’s quest for its first 5-0 start since 2015 is set to begin. Castle (1-2), meanwhile, looks to improve to .500. The Monarchs will receive to start this game.

FIRST QUARTER

5:55 p.m.: Welcome to another edition of Friday Night Lights in Kaneohe. Damien is the designated “home” team for the matchup, despite it being on Castle’s campus. As such, the Monarchs are in their purple jerseys while Castle is in its white threads. Kickoff is coming soon.
