They’ve won two of the last three Division I state championships and return two-time All-State player of the year Elena Oglivie.

So it’s no surprise that the ‘Iolani Raiders are ranked No. 1 in the first Honolulu Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10 entering tonight’s ILH regular-season opener against Mid-Pacific.

‘Iolani is not unanimous, however. Reigning ILH champion and state runner-up Kamehameha received a first-place vote and is No. 2 to start the season.

The ILH holds the top three spots and four in the Top 10 as Punahou is No. 3 and Le Jardin is No. 8.

The Buffanblu open with Sacred Hearts tonight while Le Jardin travels to play Kamehameha in its opener on Tuesday night as part of a new format in the ILH in which eight Division I teams will split up into two quadrants.

Hawaii Baptist, Le Jardin, Maryknoll and Sacred Hearts make up one quadrant with the winner earning one of three berths from the ILH to the state tournament in Division I. ‘Iolani, Punahou, Kamehameha and Mid-Pacific are in the other quadrant.

The OIA has five teams in the first Top 10 with No. 4 Mililani, No. 5 Kahuku, No. 6 Moanalua, No. 9 Kapolei and No. 10 Waianae.

The long neighbor-island team is Kamehameha-Hawaii at No. 7.

The fourth-ranked Trojans open the OIA season tonight at Waipahu while No. 9 Kapolei plays at Nanakuli and the 10th-ranked Seariders visit Radford.

Six other teams received votes in the first poll of the season as voted on by a panel of 10 media members and coaches.

King Kekaulike, which finished sixth in the final rankings of 2018, received seven votes and Sacred Hearts had six. Hilo (five), Kamehameha-Maui (four), Seabury Hall (three) and Maryknoll (two) also received votes.
