West Coast NFL teams are developing a strong interest in Hawaii.
The Los Angeles Rams will host a preseason game against the Dallas Cowboys this fall.
And now, the San Francisco 49ers, the Hawaii High School Athletic Association and USA Football are partnering to host a free youth football camp on Friday, the HHSAA announced Tuesday. The free camp will be held at the Spalding Boys and Girls Club in Honolulu from 3 to 5 p.m.
49ers prep and fan engagement director Jared Muela, HHSAA executive director Chris Chun and USA Football West Regional manager Josh Huber will be overseeing the non-contact clinic.
According to a news release, the camp is being held to celebrate the second year of a partnership in which the 49ers will underwrite the cost of the HHSAA’s coaches training through USA Football’s Heads Up program. Approximately 800 Hawaii coaches completed Heads Up Football training in 2018 as a result of the 49ers’ pledge.
USA Football will conduct Heads Up Football clinics across Hawaii this summer, when coaches will receive Heads Up Football’s curriculum either in-person or digitally, consisting of the following material:
>> Concussion recognition and response
>> Proper hydration and heat illness prevention
>> Blocking and defeating blocks
>> Shoulder tackling
>> Equipment fitting
>> Sudden cardiac arrest protocols
“The health and well-being of every HHSAA student-athlete is our highest priority,” the HHSAA’s Chun said in the release. “The San Francisco 49ers’ immense generosity coupled with USA Football’s in-person trainings and digital curriculum will afford our students even greater football experiences. In addition to the game’s fitness and social benefits, football unites our schools’ communities and spirit in an extraordinary way. We value our partnership with the 49ers and USA Football.”
A notice should go out earlier so athletes from outer island can make arrangements to come over and be able to participate or have clinics on those islands too.
I know of several people that have talked about spending the money to come over from the outer islands to help the kids get better. The training in these clinics would give that opportunity to them or hold a clinic on the outer islands.
This is not much help for the public with the info in this article. Is this for varsity teams or younger kids? There’s a big difference. Also, who is coming from the 49ers? If DeFo Buckner is involved he should be mentioned. And I guess this is only for townies. Kind of rough for the West Side to get to town by 3:00 on a school day, especially on two days notice. SMH
