The Punahou boys volleyball team will have to win one more game than it’s used to to extend its current run of state titles to eight.

The Buffanblu are not the No. 1 seed for the first time in more than a decade in the New City Nissan/HHSAA Boys Volleyball State Championships that begin Monday.

‘Iolani’s four-set win over the Buffanblu in Tuesday’s ILH championship game gave the Raiders the No. 1 overall seed and dropped the Buffanblu into an opening-round game on Monday against Castle at 6:30 p.m. at Hemmeter Fieldhouse.

OIA champion Moanalua is the No. 2 seed and will play the winner between Lahainaluna and Mililani in Thursday’s 7 p.m. quarterfinal match at Radford.

Kamehameha-Hawaii earned the No. 3 seed after winning its fifth BIIF title in the last six years and KS-Maui is the No. 4 seed after winning its third MIL title in a row.

The tournament begins Monday with Hilo, playing in the tournament for just the second time since 2000, hosting Leilehua. The Lunas, who are in the 12-team field for the first time in three years, will host the Trojans on Maui.

Farrington, which will play in its first boys volleyball state-tournament game since 1997, will visit OIA runner-up Kalaheo in the other first-round game.
