OIA-ILH Alliance: D-I blowouts down 24 percent

The first year of the OIA-ILH football regular-season alliance is done, and the numbers are in.

There was a startling change between 2017 and 2018 in Division I, where lots of OIA powerhouses left to play in the Open Division this season. D-I blowouts (35-point margin or more) are down 24 percent, and competitive games (14 points or less) are up 7 percent. In addition, tight games (7 points or less) are up 6 percent.

When you include all games in the three divisions (Open, D-I, D-II) combined, tight games are up 6 percent, competitive games are up 7 percent and blowouts are down 14 percent.

In the 43 total OIA vs. ILH games in all divisions, ILH teams combined for a 34-9 (74 percent) record in 2018.

The OIA and ILH only competed in eight games in 2017, none in the regular season, and the ILH won seven of those preseason or postseason matchups (88 percent).
