Kahuku drives again and scores on a nice post-corner route by Heffernan, who hauls in a 20-yard TD pass from Sauvao. It’s most reserves out there for Saint Louis, but Kahuku hasn’t surrendered. SAINT LOUIS 30, KAHUKU 14, 1:49, Q4.

Connor Apo has replaced de Laura at QB with 7:18 remaining. LB/S Ace Kaufusi sacks Apo, Saint Louis punts. Kahuku with minus yardage on the punt return and takes over at its 43 with 5:20 left.

Holding call sets Kahuku back, and it’s a three-and-out. Punt. Saint Louis ball at its 24.

Huge break for Kahuku as a de Laura pass is deflected by Kaonohi Kaniho and intercepted by LB Elaijahl Latu. Kahuku marches to the Saint Louis 20, but Sauvao’s deep out pass to Paulo is picked off by Korvin Feagins, who races 85 yards for a pick-6 TD. SAINT LOUIS 30, KAHUKU 7, 8:33, Q4.

Kahuku stalls after a first-down pass pass by Sauvao. Punt is downed at the Saint Louis 25.

———-

Kahuku has the ball, third-and-1 at its 26, as the third quarter closes. Momentum is with Big Red, down 23-7.

The Crusaders go three-and-out, stymied by a holding call on a first-down run. Punt is 47 yards, downed at the Kahuku 17.

Alapa has his best drive of the night, but comes up injured after running for a first down to the Saint Louis 31-yard line. Robbie Sauvao steps in, completes a 16-yard pass to Mason Paulo on a post route, then drops a dime down the sideline to Paulo for a 15-yard TD and the Red Raiders are finally on the scoreboard. SAINT LOUIS 23, KAHUKU 7, 2:38, Q3.

Kahuku comes out running with Alapa in the second half. But his first pass after the break is into double coverage and picked off by safety Kamo‘i Latu, who returns it to the 48. Nine plays later, de Laura reads the blitz and connects with Wilson on a post pattern for a 13-yard TD, the second scoring toss between the two. SAINT LOUIS 23, KAHUKU 0, 7:03, Q3.

———-

The Crusaders’ defense has dominated the first half with six sacks. Two are by LB Jordan Botelho and two more by LB Nick Herbig. LB Kila Kamakawiwo‘ole and DT Faatui Tuitele have one each. It’s been a long half for Kahuku QB Thorton Alapa, who is passing pretty well, 4-for-6, 30 yards, no picks, when he has time. Kahuku’s offense has 8 total yards. Saint Louis has run the ball 13 times for 32 yards, and Jayden de Laura has been sacked once. The junior is a scintillating 12-for-16, 162 yards, one TD, no interceptions.

RUSHING—
Kahuku:
#19 Thorton Alapa 7-(-35),
#13 Wes Alo-Maiava 4-5,
#44 Toalei Lefau 4-11,
#26 Zealand Matagi 1-(-3),

Saint Louis:

#10 Sam 6-19,

Team 1-(-17),

PASSING—
Kahuku:
#19 Alapa 4-6-0-30

Saint Louis:
#7 de Laura 12-16-0-162

RECEIVING—
Kahuku:
#2 Duke Heffernan 2-16,
#44 Lefau 1-6,
#18 Mason Paulo 1-8,

Saint Louis:
#14 Wilson 3-106,
#9 Makoa Close 4-34,
#23 Koali Nishigaya 4-19,
#1 Chance Beyer 1-3,

The half ends with Kahuku struggling to move the ball again. Saint Louis LB Jordan Botelho records his second sack, then DT Faatui Tuitele sacks Alapa. That’s six sacks by the Crusader defense already. LB Nick Herbig also has two sacks, as does Kamakawiwo‘ole.

After Kahuku’s punt, de Laura connects with Roman Wilson deep down the right hashmark for an 80-yard TD. Instant results there. Those two missed on a similar play on the opening series, but that was perfectly thrown in stride. SAINT LOUIS 16, KAHUKU 0, 2:26, Q2.

Word is that LB Miki Ah You has taken off his pads. And Sauvao isn’t playing. Massive RB Toalei Lefau rumbles 3 yards for a first down on fourth-and-1. He stays in as the wildcat QB again, but eventually Alapa returns and Kahuku punts. Very conservative, and I have to wonder if they’re just being safe with Ah You and other players since this game doesn’t count in the OIA Open standings. It would make sense, if true.

Red Raiders have second and 1, line up in a centipede formation, then motion into a power set and Wes Alo-Maiava’s wildcat run isn’t enough. Chain gang is out, Kahuku short by about a foot. It’s fourth down. What’s the call here with 5:06 left in the first half, down 9-0? Kahuku lines up in the centipede again and that’s enough for Saint Louis coach Cal Lee, who calls time out.

Kahuku set to begin its third series after a 15-yard kickoff return to the 18, but a man is missing and they call their second time out. Then the Red Raiders are flagged for a false start. That’s 54 yards in penalties. Thorton Alapa is still at QB, no sign of previous starter Robbie Sauvao. Coach Sterling Carvalho didn’t indicate before the game that Sauvao had any issues physically. But Kahuku looks very much out of sync. The good news for Big Red is there’s plenty of time left in this one.

The Crusaders methodically drive for the game’s first TD. Sam turns on the jets and dives to the pylon for a 10-yard score. The PAT snap is off-target, the third bad snap so far for Saint Louis, and Kahuku snuffs the conversion attempt. SAINT LOUIS 9, KAHUKU 0, 7:20, Q2.

———-

Kahuku goes backward again, done in by a holding call and later a sack by Kila Kamakawiwo‘ole. The quarter ends with Kahuku fourth-and-31.

Saint Louis beset by bad snaps. First is on second-and-7, 17-yard loss. Then on a punt, the ball goes back near the goal line, where the punter miraculously recovers, sprints around defenders and runs the sideline before firing a spiral to Prince Solomon. He drops the pass, and if he hadn’t, he would’ve run the final 50 for a TD. Still, that’s a huge play by the punter (there are two players wearing No. 11), saving around 40 yards of hidden yardage for the Crusaders. Kahuku ball at the Saint Louis 44.

Kahuku’s opening series is a three and out. 48-yard punt by Ethan Erickson, and a personal foul on Saint Louis.

Saint Louis’ opening series includes a clutch third-and-11 toss from Jayden de Laura to Makoa Close for a first down. That came against a corner blitz, good read by the junior QB. The next third down, Kahuku jumps offside, chopping it to third and 6, and a personal foul on Kahuku gives Saint Louis a first down. de Laura’s key 20-yard scramble between the hash marks racks up another first down at the Kahuku 7. LB Miki Ah You makes a strong play to stop RB Dayton Sam for no gain, then Aaron Fonoimoana-Vaomu sacks de Laura. STL settles for a 29-yard FG by Garyn Napuunoa, good. That was one of their more deliberate drives of the season, no huddle, but no hurry. SAINT LOUIS 3, KAHUKU 0, 5:52, Q1.

PRE-GAME
It is an idyllic night for the showdown between No. 1 and nationally-ranked Saint Louis and No. 2 Kahuku. Trade winds have died down some, but it isn’t as humid tonight as it has been in recent weeks. No rain clouds above yet. Close to perfect conditions for the Crusaders and Red Raiders. Saint Louis in navy blue, top to bottom, wearing their heavily trimmed red numbers and stripes, tapered with white. Kahuku is in white jerseys and pants, with red helmets. Everything classic.

Saint Louis will receive.

Worst coached first half EVER by Kahuku!

  2. ??? September 7, 2018 8:56 pm

Kahuku coaching like they came from the JV?
    Oh wait, They Did…….

  3. Notes September 7, 2018 9:08 pm

Lots of positives to build on for Kahuku and a lot of things they can fix…and its only halftime.

  4. 88 September 7, 2018 9:22 pm

Give credit where credit is due! The Crusader front 4 is MURDERING our OLINE! 3 weeks to prepare and we come out with this garbage….

  5. FightingHawaiianofNotreDame September 7, 2018 9:23 pm

Yeah. Kahuku is positively getting out played and out coached.

  6. ??? September 7, 2018 9:56 pm

Robbie Sauvao should have been starting!
Don’t know what game you’re watching but stl front 4 is not killing anything. USCfan can have Tui & Quinones (over-rated)..

  7. Rrforlifebaby September 7, 2018 9:58 pm

Not worried at all. Crusaders doing there thing…they are as advertised. Big Red has alot of upside. Long season.
    RRFL!!

  8. ??? September 7, 2018 10:03 pm

If this was Timmy Chang or Jason Gesser’s team it would be 81-0

  9. Too Meke 2 September 7, 2018 10:03 pm

Cuz 30-7 is a close game? What ya talkin bout ???

  10. 88 September 7, 2018 10:03 pm

8 sacks(and counting) and holding penalties says something else. Wish we would of tried to establish the run. Hard to pass on a Defense that faces one of the best passing offense in the State everyday in practice.

  11. Too Meke 2 September 7, 2018 10:05 pm

@Rrforlifebaby, saying the Red Raiders have a lot of upside is just someone who is biased with very wishful thinking.

I never seen so many ducks thrown by one team in my life. Looks like one Pop Warner offense out there.

  12. OIA September 7, 2018 10:10 pm

I guess Kahuku will be looking for another head coach next year! AGAIN!

  13. Too Meke 2 September 7, 2018 10:22 pm

Late score against some 3rd teamers. Kahukuans will somehow turn this into “upside” or some excuse that they really didn’t get pounded today. I think Waialua could have given STL a more competitive game.

  14. Notes September 7, 2018 10:23 pm

Kahuku will be fine, These catholic schools need to make their own national league where they can do their all out recruiting and purchasing. Not impressed!

  15. 88 September 7, 2018 10:26 pm

That late TD was caught on a starter bro. C’mon man.

  16. Rrforlifebaby September 7, 2018 10:41 pm

@ Too meke 2, I may be biased, but like said, Crusaders are as advertised. You sound more anti Kahuku than I’m being biased to my alma mater. It’s a long season, Big Red still hasn’t shown everything, and I will admit, Crusader O wasn’t in top form tonight. Both teams will get better and battle it out for the trophy. Sorry trojan fans, you guys going be on the sidelines again. RRFL!

  17. Dafun September 7, 2018 10:48 pm

Both teams looked rusty but sorry kahuku fans. Your o is terrible all you can do is qb run. Defense was alright. Punahou is gonna get it next week. And toomeke and awrite are crybabies and kahuku fanboys who have nothing better to do than talk crap about St louis

  18. Too Meke 2 September 7, 2018 10:49 pm

@88, were they all starters in at that time? No there were 2nd and 3rd stringers. Everyone knows, it takes an entire defense from putting on a pass rush, to covering, etc. Regardless if it was caught on a first teamer, was it their top defense or even second tier defensive unit? Nah, I don’t think so.

But keep making excuses. Now that STL is taking away football from you guys, what do you have left? Still begging. I hope you guys get back to #1. I mean, we all need empathy. Yall got nothing else.

    #RR4L

  19. ??? September 7, 2018 10:55 pm

    Does @Kamehameha #!
Still think this is the best STL team ever?
    NOT EVEN CLOSE🤭😂

  20. Tokotoko September 7, 2018 10:57 pm

There were some bright spots for the Red Raiders w/ Sauvao at QB, but losing Ah You really hurt their defensive efforts. Can’t really blame the Kahuku coaching, St. Louis is just on a totally different level. Very Dominant performance by Crusaders.
The other bright spot or “upside” for Big Red is that this loss doesn’t count against their record…LOL! IMO they need to change that rule.

  21. 88 September 7, 2018 11:01 pm

No one is making excuses just calling it like it is. You sound very disgruntled. Shouldn’t you be happy the Crusaders got the W?

  22. Robocop September 7, 2018 11:09 pm

Why does it seem like the guys trolling against St Louis and now trolling against Kahuku is the same guy trying to stir up crap

  23. Dafun September 7, 2018 11:11 pm

Yeah but it’s more fun to see you mad over our win lol! Because you guys bash St Louis all the time so good for you

  24. Hopeful Alumnus September 7, 2018 11:47 pm

Hopefully, Big Red learns from this loss. I’ll be
Be honest with all of you. Red Raiders were outplayed by a good team. They appeared to be intimidated by the Crusaders. If Kahuku expects to make the playoffs, they best get their act together as they seemed dumbfounded by the Crusaders Offense. Anyway, get over it and move on, like any great team would do.

  25. bye September 8, 2018 12:57 am

Being a former Crusader from the North Shore I’ve been able to see both sides. Kahuku got a lot of passion and can get poor sport sometimes. St. Louis at times has this amazing fan base and then doesn’t. Heck, I was sitting with them last year when half of our side got up and left when they thought the game was over. Only for Chevan to pull off that miracle. My phone blowing up asking what happened? I ignored all those part time fans because that’s what bothers me the most. Talk when we up, quiet when we down. At least Red Raider Nation is always there like no other community. I understand we a private school and some families move on after their kids graduate. That whole recruiting thing needs to put to rest already. It’s a private school! It is what it is. Every private school is formed of athletes from all over. Just be happy that Hawaii has some great football. Hope the support for the Crusaders is like this year after year. I know Big Red will be there. And finally, to the genius that was sitting near me asking for Basco, please don’t! haha I wish but that team is on another level. Hope these 2 teams meet again. I’m sure the game may be very interesting. Love my Crusader and Red Raider fam.

  26. Notes September 8, 2018 1:14 am

bye – Shoot for the sky, St. Louis cant reach its potential on this small island where the 2nd best team is a public school. Bosco, IMG, BG etc are the competition for St. Louis. I said it previously but private schools that have endless resources and recruiting should be playing each other not public schools.

  27. Hammer September 8, 2018 1:38 am

Bro you talk about st louis recruiting if that was the case ask mililani kapolei and a lot of other OIA schools that got starters from st louis you no why because they couldn’t pay so you want to talk about recruiting look at the OiA rule you can play were ever you want now the ILH rule you sit out year all you guys need is stop crying and give st louis the credit they deserve for me at the end of the day I personally like to see all the local athletes get scholarships so the parents don’t have to pay and watch them on Saturday’s and some on sundays

  28. bye September 8, 2018 2:11 am

Toy Hammer – I think you misunderstood me but I don’t really care. I just said to give that whole recruiting thing rest already. I really don’t give a crap if any school “recruits”. Just sounds like an excuse to me. I’ll be real with you though. If all the homegrown talent from the North Shore stayed at Kahuku, they would wipe out everybody. They have kids in the Mainland, Utah, Mater Dei, and other cali schools. So much talent from a small community. I went to St. Louis for my own reasons but being better and thinking I was above any other program wasn’t the reason. It’s a private school that costs a lot. so yeah we come from all over. And don’t get it twisted. Mililani, Kahuku, Kapolei, and whoever else don’t get starters from us. WE get starters from THEM. Most coming from the west side. And I ain’t crying about nothing. Played for the crusaders and don’t regret it. Lost some tough games but oh well, life goes on.

  29. tunafishsandwhich September 8, 2018 2:31 am

    RektRaiders

  30. TooMeke September 8, 2018 4:13 am

Hats off to StL. Prepared and ready. Congrats on the win. Big Red was not. And no excuses after 3 weeks to prep. That was the most unorganized sideline I’ve seen in a long time.

Hope all the injuries are small kine. I noticed Vimahi never play 2nd half either.

StL is best in state until someone beats them. But beatable. They had 2 big plays for TDs. Otherwise their offense was not all that.

See you in States. (And I’m flattered TM2 like copy me…whaaaaat??)

  31. anywaaaays!! September 8, 2018 7:26 am

lets be real. saint lulu didn’t beat kahuku last night. The entire system in the state, from governor ige on down to cal lee and the ILH agenda beat us last night. they make the rules favor them, they create “scholarships”to take away kids to their “school” and permanently separate them from their families. the entire state of hawaii is designed to beat us because when you’re born on the north shore, you are born HATED. but it’s okay. our boys played hard. enjoy this victory while you can. it’s the best football win money can buy. RRFL!

  32. Skyhawks September 8, 2018 7:55 am

All i know is that center from St.louis is a beast!!!

  33. ALLILH September 8, 2018 8:40 am

aannyywwaayyss there you are! I think you need some love in your life! Oh never mind I forgot your an IDIOT!

    bbwwaahhaahhaahhaa!!!

  34. Too Meke 2 September 8, 2018 8:48 am

    @88,

Here is a quote from the story, “Kahuku’s final TD came with less than 2 minutes to play while the Crusaders had reserves on the field.”

I noticed for several years when Kahuku was very successful you talked a big game. Now that STL is on top and Kahuku hasn’t beaten STL in over 1000+ days, you are taken a more subtle tone? Why is that?

  35. Buddy Los Banos September 8, 2018 8:52 am

There is more to Saint Lulu than just football. The movie, Field of Dreams..”if you build it, he (they) will come.” Cal brought a program to Kalaepohaku and he made it work. Some kids just wanna go there, and if the parents wanna pay the $$ to send their kid there, so be it. It is what it is. Saint Lulu isn’t Punahou, Kamehameha, or Iolani. We the Brotherhood. I think, in some ways, other schools would love to have a Brotherhood like what goes on up at Kalaepohaku and down at the clubhouse on Coolidge Street. Football…it’s a game. I rather see my Brothers go on to do great things after the football, athletics are over. That’s the game of LIFE. And Saint Lulu teaches the game of life. Back in the 60’s, the governor (John Burns), the mayor (Neal Blaisdell), the police chief (Dan Liu), the fire chief (Richard Young), and the head of the City Council (Herman Lemke) were all Saint Lulu graduates/former athletes. It was also the year that Saint Lulu took the Triple Crown (championships in football, basketball, baseball), which has never been duplicated since that ’66-’67 season. Much was accomplished during that time, (when the ILH was all 10 schools) but what was most impressive, were the Men of Kalaepohaku, who ran the State and City and County. That is what Saint Louis is all about. Yeah, it’s a rambling testimony. But Saint Louis is more than just football and all that. have a good 1. peace

  36. Too Meke 2 September 8, 2018 8:54 am

@ Bye, you say, “At least Red Raider Nation is always there like no other community.”

If that is true, where is this community for the JV Football Game? Where is this community for other sports other than Varsity Football.

Do those sports or lower level teams not count?

You quote should be, “As least Red Raider Nation is always there for VARSITY FOOTBALL GAMES WHEN THEY STARTED TO WIN like no other community.”

I recall in the 80’s and early 90’s when there was no support since they weren’t that good yet.

    #longlivesemones

  37. Too Meke 2 September 8, 2018 9:00 am

I remember 3 years ago when Kahuku won, there would be about 125 posts by now, not 34. It seems when Kahuku doesn’t win, many bangwagon riders disappear and many people don’t create multiple names to write on here. So there isn’t much to write about. Now it’s the same ol thing:

    1) Recruiting and stealing kids from the North Shore
    2) Cal Lee cannot coach
    3) If all the homegrown kids stayed in Kahuku/Laie then no one would touch them

    Here are my replies:

    1) No one owns a kid and that kid does not belong to any geographical region. The only people who say that are pathetic people who have to convince themselves that something should be better since they are not getting the outcome they are looking for. #excusesareneeded

    2) Cal Lee’s record seems to suggest he can coach.

    3) Why would kid’s want to stay in Kahuku, a school nationally known for being good in football but horrendous in academics. Most kids will not play college football and Kahuku doesn’t provide them with the best option post high school graduation.

  38. Dafun September 8, 2018 9:04 am

^exactly. So stop complaining and go stay on kahuku side or where ever you’re from. You’re the most annoying people on this site all you kahuku trolls. Stop the old recruiting and taking the kids from the community thing. Hell I wouldn’t ever wanna live in kahuku either I’d rather be in town if anything. And I bet you guys didn’t even play football for kahuku. Just a bunch of geeks from another school or something. Stop nuthugging

  39. anywaaaays!! September 8, 2018 9:23 am

Too Meke 2 a.k.a. Dafun a.k.a. ALLILH a.k.a. Education First. the only person with multiple screen names is you. You deny what everyone sees about high school recruiting and how Cal Lee singlehandedly destroyed high school football for ILH greed. You ignore that all the refs in last year’s championship game were Saint Lulu alumni. You ignore that HHSAA leadership and almost all the leadership in the state legislature are ILH alumni with a vested interest in destroying Kahuku football for the prestige it carries. Then, with no humbleness, you attack our community. This is why we call ourselves the enemies of the state. The only way they can beat us is to keep stacking the deck against us. RRFL!

  40. Realist808 September 8, 2018 9:34 am

@anywaaaays!! You can’t play the victim role after running your mouth on every post. I wouldn’t even consider you guys enemy of the state. Campbell and Mililani are the top 2 teams in the OIA judging by the eye test. The Red Raider coaching staff seems a bit mediocre for the type of talent they have. Couldn’t move the ball offensively on STL first D and they resorted to a pop warner like play to deceive the D to jump. They got a false start penalty and the head coach flipped. STL needs to tune up a bit as well. Offensively they weren’t clicking and defense looked fatigued in the second half without Bothello. Cal should’ve let the 1st string play the whole game to get a full game in. The starters have not played a full game all season.

  41. Notes September 8, 2018 10:12 am

The adjustments were great by the Kahuku coaching staff, its called in-game adjustments. Players miss reads and get beat on BOTH teams which is out of the coaches control. Kahuku will come back stronger next time, they are still #2 in the state, Punahou already lost to Kahuku so Mililani is the only ? mark for St. Louis.

  42. Spektatuh808 September 8, 2018 2:19 pm

Yes we all know St Louis is playing on a top tier elite level. Def not taking anything away from them,
but Kahuku was so unprepared. Offense looked hella lost. 3 timeouts in the first quarter. many pre snap infractions and penalties. Kids looked lost coming out of the centipede formation. Defense always jumping etc. It was a damn circus show, compared to all prior Kahuku teams.

St Louis is a bad a$$ squad, but Kahuku wasnt ready.

Look forward to seeing these teams meet again. both ready to do da damn thing.

  43. Too Meke 2 September 9, 2018 2:57 pm

James, a.k.a. anywaaays wants everyone to know that Kahuku is the ENEMY OF THE STATE.

    HAHAHAHAHA

  44. ??? September 10, 2018 11:42 am

    @Skyhawks
All i know is that center from St.louis is a beast!!!

    What game were you watching?
Kahuku’s 5 foot 9 inch Nose Guard was in backfield all night!!!!!
