The half ends with Kahuku struggling to move the ball again. Saint Louis LB Jordan Botelho records his second sack, then DT Faatui Tuitele sacks Alapa. That’s six sacks by the Crusader defense already. LB Nick Herbig also has two sacks, as does Kamakawiwo‘ole.

Word is that LB Miki Ah You has taken off his pads. And Sauvao isn’t playing. Massive RB Toalei Lefau rumbles 3 yards for a first down on fourth-and-1. He stays in as the wildcat QB again, but eventually Alapa returns and Kahuku punts. Very conservative, and I have to wonder if they’re just being safe with Ah You and other players since this game doesn’t count in the OIA Open standings. It would make sense, if true.
Red Raiders have second and 1, line up in a centipede formation, then motion into a power set and Wes Alo-Maiava’s wildcat run isn’t enough. Chain gang is out, Kahuku short by about a foot. It’s fourth down. What’s the call here with 5:06 left in the first half, down 9-0? Kahuku lines up in the centipede again and that’s enough for Saint Louis coach Cal Lee, who calls time out.
Kahuku set to begin its third series after a 15-yard kickoff return to the 18, but a man is missing and they call their second time out. Then the Red Raiders are flagged for a false start. That’s 54 yards in penalties. Thorton Alapa is still at QB, no sign of previous starter Robbie Sauvao. Coach Sterling Carvalho didn’t indicate before the game that Sauvao had any issues physically. But Kahuku looks very much out of sync. The good news for Big Red is there’s plenty of time left in this one.
The Crusaders methodically drive for the game’s first TD. Sam turns on the jets and dives to the pylon for a 10-yard score. The PAT snap is off-target, the third bad snap so far for Saint Louis, and Kahuku snuffs the conversion attempt. SAINT LOUIS 9, KAHUKU 0, 7:20, Q2.

Saint Louis beset by bad snaps. First is on second-and-7, 17-yard loss. Then on a punt, the ball goes back near the goal line, where the punter miraculously recovers, sprints around defenders and runs the sideline before firing a spiral to Prince Solomon. He drops the pass, and if he hadn’t, he would’ve run the final 50 for a TD. Still, that’s a huge play by the punter (there are two players wearing No. 11), saving around 40 yards of hidden yardage for the Crusaders. Kahuku ball at the Saint Louis 44.

Saint Louis’ opening series includes a clutch third-and-11 toss from Jayden de Laura to Makoa Close for a first down. That came against a corner blitz, good read by the junior QB. The next third down, Kahuku jumps offside, chopping it to third and 6, and a personal foul on Kahuku gives Saint Louis a first down. de Laura’s key 20-yard scramble between the hash marks racks up another first down at the Kahuku 7. @88, were they all starters in at that time? No there were 2nd and 3rd stringers. Everyone knows, it takes an entire defense from putting on a pass rush, to covering, etc. Regardless if it was caught on a first teamer, was it their top defense or even second tier defensive unit? There were some bright spots for the Red Raiders w/ Sauvao at QB, but losing Ah You really hurt their defensive efforts. Can’t really blame the Kahuku coaching, St. Louis is just on a totally different level. Very Dominant performance by Crusaders.
The other bright spot or “upside” for Big Red is that this loss doesn’t count against their record…LOL! IMO they need to change that rule.

Be honest with all of you. Red Raiders were outplayed by a good team. They appeared to be intimidated by the Crusaders. If Kahuku expects to make the playoffs, they best get their act together as they seemed dumbfounded by the Crusaders Offense. Anyway, get over it and move on, like any great team would do.
Being a former Crusader from the North Shore I’ve been able to see both sides. Kahuku got a lot of passion and can get poor sport sometimes. St. Louis at times has this amazing fan base and then doesn’t. Heck, I was sitting with them last year when half of our side got up and left when they thought the game was over. Only for Chevan to pull off that miracle. My phone blowing up asking what happened? I ignored all those part time fans because that’s what bothers me the most. Talk when we up, quiet when we down. At least Red Raider Nation is always there like no other community. I understand we a private school and some families move on after their kids graduate. That whole recruiting thing needs to put to rest already. It’s a private school! It is what it is. Every private school is formed of athletes from all over. Just be happy that Hawaii has some great football. Hope the support for the Crusaders is like this year after year. I know Big Red will be there. And finally, to the genius that was sitting near me asking for Basco, please don’t! haha I wish but that team is on another level. Hope these 2 teams meet again. They have kids in the Mainland, Utah, Mater Dei, and other cali schools. So much talent from a small community. I went to St. Louis for my own reasons but being better and thinking I was above any other program wasn’t the reason. It’s a private school that costs a lot. so yeah we come from all over. And don’t get it twisted. Mililani, Kahuku, Kapolei, and whoever else don’t get starters from us. WE get starters from THEM. Most coming from the west side. And I ain’t crying about nothing. Played for the crusaders and don’t regret it. Lost some tough games but oh well, life goes on.

I noticed for several years when Kahuku was very successful you talked a big game. Now that STL is on top and Kahuku hasn’t beaten STL in over 1000+ days, you are taken a more subtle tone? Why is that?
There is more to Saint Lulu than just football. The movie, Field of Dreams..”if you build it, he (they) will come.” Cal brought a program to Kalaepohaku and he made it work. Some kids just wanna go there, and if the parents wanna pay the $$ to send their kid there, so be it. It is what it is. Saint Lulu isn’t Punahou, Kamehameha, or Iolani. We the Brotherhood. I think, in some ways, other schools would love to have a Brotherhood like what goes on up at Kalaepohaku and down at the clubhouse on Coolidge Street. Football…it’s a game. I rather see my Brothers go on to do great things after the football, athletics are over. That’s the game of LIFE. And Saint Lulu teaches the game of life. Back in the 60’s, the governor (John Burns), the mayor (Neal Blaisdell), the police chief (Dan Liu), the fire chief (Richard Young), and the head of the City Council (Herman Lemke) were all Saint Lulu graduates/former athletes. It was also the year that Saint Lulu took the Triple Crown (championships in football, basketball, baseball), which has never been duplicated since that ’66-’67 season. Much was accomplished during that time, (when the ILH was all 10 schools) but what was most impressive, were the Men of Kalaepohaku, who ran the State and City and County. That is what Saint Louis is all about. Yeah, it’s a rambling testimony. But Saint Louis is more than just football and all that. have a good 1. peace

I remember 3 years ago when Kahuku won, there would be about 125 posts by now, not 34. It seems when Kahuku doesn’t win, many bangwagon riders disappear and many people don’t create multiple names to write on here. So there isn’t much to write about. Now it’s the same ol thing:
1) Recruiting and stealing kids from the North Shore
2) Cal Lee cannot coach
3) If all the homegrown kids stayed in Kahuku/Laie then no one would touch them
Here are my replies:
1) No one owns a kid and that kid does not belong to any geographical region. The only people who say that are pathetic people who have to convince themselves that something should be better since they are not getting the outcome they are looking for. #excusesareneeded
2) Cal Lee’s record seems to suggest he can coach.
3) Why would kid’s want to stay in Kahuku, a school nationally known for being good in football but horrendous in academics. Most kids will not play college football and Kahuku doesn’t provide them with the best option post high school graduation.

Campbell and Mililani are the top 2 teams in the OIA judging by the eye test. The Red Raider coaching staff seems a bit mediocre for the type of talent they have. Couldn’t move the ball offensively on STL first D and they resorted to a pop warner like play to deceive the D to jump. They got a false start penalty and the head coach flipped. STL needs to tune up a bit as well. Offensively they weren’t clicking and defense looked fatigued in the second half without Bothello. Cal should’ve let the 1st string play the whole game to get a full game in. The starters have not played a full game all season.
The adjustments were great by the Kahuku coaching staff, its called in-game adjustments. Players miss reads and get beat on BOTH teams which is out of the coaches control. Kahuku will come back stronger next time, they are still #2 in the state, Punahou already lost to Kahuku so Mililani is the only ? mark for St. Louis.
Yes we all know St Louis is playing on a top tier elite level. Def not taking anything away from them,
but Kahuku was so unprepared. Offense looked hella lost. 3 timeouts in the first quarter. many pre snap infractions and penalties. Kids looked lost coming out of the centipede formation. Defense always jumping etc. It was a damn circus show, compared to all prior Kahuku teams.
St Louis is a bad a$$ squad, but Kahuku wasnt ready.
