The skinny: (Aug. 28) Zero turnovers. ZERO. This is in 85 pass attempts for an offense that is all about balancing the scales and maximizing advantage. The numbers speak for themselves, and we can only opine or guess about what would’ve happened had the Saint Louis game not been cancelled. Gabriel’s rushing numbers would be significantly higher if not for sacks, but that’s true of most QBs. The zero-turnover factor is one of the main keys that separates real football from nerdpod number crunching. Some QBs rack up garbage-time stats. Some QBs win games without piling up major numbers. (Marcus Mariota rarely had a 300-yard game at Saint Louis, but dominated — and won a state title — with efficiency.)
Still, even as Gabriel holds himself to an incredibly high bar of excellence, he is the orchestrator of a finely-tuned machine. His performance against an excellent Kamehameha defense was in the rain, and that brought his completion rate down to 57 percent. For the most part, a four-wide offense needs to hit 60-65 percent to be consistent and effective. But rain is rain (injuries to key weapons didn’t help either), and I think Gabriel just gets better as his O-line gets more cohesive, and his receivers gain more chemistry with him.
His efficiency will also improve when RB Kalifi Malepeai (6-0, 250, Sr.) returns from injury. Time is on the Trojans’ side, especially up front with one of the youngest crews in the state: LT Mikey Agasiva (6-1, 250, Fr.), LG Makana Sing (5-11, 260, Sr.), C Zach Gardner (6-0, 260, So.), RG Sergio Muasau (6-0, 300, Jr.), RT Jacob Tuatagaloa (6-2, 320, Jr.).

Props to coach York for scheduling St. John Bosco. To travel away from Hawai’i and take on the Best team in the country, only team i remember did that is Kahuku. This will be an tough challenge for Mililani, because St. John Bosco is good. On another level then that Narbonne team that flew out here a few weeks ago.

That Narbonne team is a pathetic LA City Section Champ. They lose their out of league games vs. top Southern Section teams & St. Louis and win all their weak league games, which puts them in the very weak LA City Section Playoffs. It’s like how Alliance Open Division views D2 in Hawai’i. Then Narbonne by default gets a state bowl bid since the Southern Section puts all of its best teams in D1 and only 1 team advances to states.
The result is So Cal’s 2nd thru 8th best teams don’t get to go to states. Narbonne would be a quarterfinalist in SS D1 at best if they get a favorable match up. I doubt this year’s weak squad would win a game in the SS D1 playoffs.
I agree with you Izzz! Mililani is like a private school. A bunch of players from out of their districts. All great players. Good recruiting by coaches! Bosco should be a good game
Rumor is Rod and his Trojans were the 4th option! Supposedly Kahuku, StLouis and Punahou turned it down. It was generous of Bosco to help with some of the finances by giving $10 thousand. Most of the comments are made by individuals who have really low IQs that prevent you guys from exploring more than the private vs. public school matter. Toomeke, Awrite, ???, Anywaaays, ILH and other idiots like them focus solely on hating St. Louis and Cal Lee and other ILH schools and blame recruiting to justify their pattern of losing to the private schools. You overlook the illegal GE exemptions obtained Rod York and his history of abusive conduct and the recruiting by Kahuku under the guise and assistance of the Laie Stake/ Mormon Church and the DOEs administrative disfunction at Kahuku. The discussion will never advance as long as the mental midgets are permitted to chime in.
