Kapolei defensive tackle Kalani Vakameilalo had his mind on Oregon State.

Now the Beavers have his oral commitment. The 6-foot-4, 290-pound senior committed to OSU on Wednesday night, Kapolei coach Darren Hernandez confirmed.

Vakameilalo had also received offers from Arizona State, Boise State, Kansas, Nevada, Pitt, San Diego State, Washington State and Wyoming. In the last two days, Cal, Michigan and Wisconsin had begun to show interest, but Vakameilalo already had his heart set.

“He liked the family atmosphere and the college town feel,” Hernandez texted.

Vakameilalo’s appeal began to grow after strong showings at the All-Poly and University of Michigan summer camps. He is close to becoming an NCAA academic qualifier. He’s not the only local defensive tackle OSU is chasing. Lahainaluna’s Hercules Mata‘afa is also on OSU’s wish list.
