GAME NIGHT 9/1: Farrington/Kailua

Farrington takes a knee, then a timeout with :44.3 left. Another knee and Kailua takes its final timeout. 39.2. Another knee on third down. Farrington calls timeout with :04 left facing fourth down. Eter runs out the clock.

Another false start but Mejia connects with Wright for 13 yards and finds Kupahu over the middle for 19 to the Farrington 43. Farrington DL Foi Sila shaken up but leaves under his own power.  2:56 left. Mejia throws up a prayer under pressure and Kahoonei answers for a 12-yard reception. After a false start, Mejia to Wright for 5 yards. Timeout Kailua at the Farrington 31. 1:40. Mejia has Rasay open down the sideline, but they can’t connect. Third and 10. Deep ball to Wright out of bounds and Mejia is slow to get up. He’ll have to come out of the game for fourth and 10. 1:29. Timeout Kailua, Surfriders have one left. Mejia back in, he’s under pressure and throws incomplete. Farrington ball. 1:22.

Three runs and a punt for Farrington. Kailua ball at its 30. 3:14. How many chances do the Surfriders have left? Farrington has one first down in the second half, Kailua with two.

Rasay scoops up an errant snap for a gain of 4. Picks up 7 up the middle for a first down, then a loss of 2 and a sack back to the 25 and an incomplete pass. Teramoto back in to punt. Farrington ball at its 35. 5:30.

Kailua comes up with the stop on third and 1. Umaga in to punt, but first a delay of game. Kailua takes over at its 20. 8:00

Kailua gets it right back with an interception by Dakota Kadooka. 1:47.  Of course, the drive starts with a false start. Farrington stuffs two runs. Mejia connects with Wright for 9 yards on the final play of the quarter. Kailua punt out of bounds. Farrington ball at its 31.

Mejia hits Kamryn Kahoonei over the middle for 18 yards. Holding on second down pushes Kaliua back to its 46. On second and 32, Castilliano comes up with his second interception of the game. Helmet-to-helmet penalty on Farrington. Govs ball at their 35. 1:53.

Tipped pass is intercepted by La’a Russell. Illegal block pushes Kailua back to midfield to start the drive. 3:54

Kailua false start and another punt. It’s nearly blocked, but Teramoto get it away. Farrington ball at its 34.

Farrington’s drive starts with a false start. Kailua stuff three runs and the Governors punt. Kailua ball at its 25. 7:22


Kailua’s penalty woes continue into the third quarter with back-to-back holding calls pushing the Surfriders back to their 9. After two incomplete passes, Kailua punts. Farrington ball at its 40. 9:34.

Kailua breaks into Farrington territory but Thane Tanuvasa stuffs a fourth-down run at the Govs’ 40. Farrington offense in hurry-up mode, but Surfriders also stop a fourth-down attempt at their 40. After Mejia picks up 9 yards, a hold penalty pushes Kailua back. His deep pass is intercepted by Chasen Castilliano on the final play of the half.

Moore breaks free on first down and sprints 87 yards before being dragged down at the Kailua 8. He has 153 yards on seven carries. Short loss on first and goal and Eter keeps to the 6 on second. Eter drops back and slips down at the 14. Blessing Umaga field goal good from 32 yards. 4:59

After Rasay’s 13 yard burst, Kailua is called for three consecutive false starts, giving them first and 25. Much needed timeout Surfriders. 10:05. Aaron Mejia connects with Tanner Wright for 24 yards to midfield. Mejia fakes a keeper then tosses it outside to Gaege Kupahu for 7 yards and a first down. Another false start and a delay of game makes it first and 20. Good coverage by Farrington on two deep balls. Kailua punt rolls dead at the Farrington 5, 7:48.

Bobby Moore takes the handoff up the middle and breaks loose for a 53-yard run to the Kailua 34. Moore picks up 10 more. A bad snap to Stephen Eter results in a loss of 12 on the final play of the first quarter. A personal foul on a blindside block pushes Farrington back into its own territory, forcing its third punt.

Kailua working the perimeter with tosses to Samson Rasay for 14 yards and Cameron Dudoit-Kamai for 9. Dudoit-Kamai picks up the second first down of the drive with a 2-yard dive on third down. Surfirders can’t connect on two throws over the middle, a deep ball is too long and Kailua will punt fro, its 46. Farrington ball at its 13. 1:17.

The teams trade punts on the opening possessions. Farrington converts on a third and 12 with a 14 yard completion from Chris Afe-Alaivanu to Reginald Faamatau to midfield. A false start and a tackle for loss by Kailua’s Alika Teramoto effectively end the drive and the Govs punt again. 3:31.

8:00 — Farrington will receive to open the game.

7:23 p.m. — Farrington wins the JV game 42-12. Varsity coming up around 8 p.m.

NOTES: Farrington has won the last six meetings vs. Kailua and 11 of the last 12. Kailua’s last win over Farrington came 31-15 at home in 2010, it is the last time the Surfriders scored more than 14 points against the Govs. Farrington is 15-1 when it has a rusher go over 100 yards against Kailua. Kailua is 4-3-1 when it has a rusher go over 100 yards against Farrington. Kailua is looking to start a season 4-0 for the second time in three years. If it can do so, Wong would be just the second Kailua coach to start a season 4-0 more than once. The others are: Darren Johnson (4), Jerry Fornelia (1), Alex Kane (1), Joe Kahahawai (1). Randall Okimoto’s next win will pass Al Espinda for most in school history. Okimoto is 113-64-3 and Espinda was 113-52-5.
