GAME NIGHT 8/20: Waimea/’Iolani

Six more games on Oahu scheduled for Saturday including a couple of afternoon tilts involving neighbor island teams. Let’s get to it.

The No. 10-ranked Raiders are trying to start 2-0 for the third consecutive season. ‘Iolani is 14-1 in its last 15 games against teams for the neighbor islands with the only loss coming at home to Kauai in the 2013 D-II state semifinals.

No. 10 ‘Iolani 35, Waimea 3

FINAL. ‘Iolani coach Wendell Look gets career win No. 175.

3:55 p.m.: Waimea continues to run the ball and calls a timeout facing a 4th and 2 on ‘Iolani’s 42. 3:56 left, still 35-3.

3:48 p.m.: And just like that, Yokogawa tosses a 25-yard TD pass to Jonah Miyazawa. Tyler Udarbe PAT good. 35-3, 7:43.

3:43 p.m.: ‘Iolani takes over on its own 40 with 9:47 left. Mizutani’s day is done. In comes backup QB Jarin Yokogawa. Pascua’s day at RB looks to be done as well as Troy Hanaoka is in at RB.

3:39 p.m.: Waimea content to eat the clock running the ball and rarely attempts to pass. End of the third quarter with ‘Iolani still up 28-3.

3:20 p.m.: Mizutani throws an absolute DIME to Brent Nagami, hitting him in stride for a 55-yard TD. Minami PAT good. 28-3, 9:24.

3:17 p.m.: Waimea 3 and out to start 2H. Iolani starts on its own 37.

2:59 p.m.: It’s halftime. Raiders tried a hail mary at the end of the half. Ball is caught but ruled out of bounds. Photo is deceiving, maybe he didn’t have control when he went out of bounds. But this photo looks pretty convincing:

2:47 p.m.: Make that THREE rushing touchdowns in the first half for KJ Pascua as he goes in from 6 yards out. 21-3 Raiders, 3:19, Q2.

2:45 p.m.: ‘Iolani is driving. Mizutani is 4-4, 76 yards passing on the drive. Ball on Waimea 11, Raiders call time with 3:43 left.

2:37 p.m.: 7:03 left in the second quarter. Waimea timeout. 3rd and 9 on their own 45. Have yet to attempt a pass, maybe they’re setting something up … Nope, they run again for a loss of 1 and punt. ‘Iolani starting on its own 14, 6:11 left in the first half.

2:29 p.m.: Waimea with a bad punt snap over the head of Taniguchi and the Raiders recover on the Waimea 11. Next play is an 11-yard TD run for KJ Pascua, his second of the game. 14-3, 9:55, Q2.

2:25 p.m.:End 1: ‘Iolani 7, Waimea 3. Waimea has the ball on its own 49, 2nd and 4.

2:20 p.m.: ‘Iolani drives right down the field and KJ Pascua punches it in for a 1-yard rushing TD. Evan Minami PAT good. Raiders up 7-3, 2:26, Q1

2:16 p.m.: ‘Iolani’s first play of its next drive is a 35 yard pass from Tai-John Mizutani to Justin Genovia. Raiders now on the Waimea 25 and the Menehunes call a timeout.


2:14 p.m.: Menehunes begin their first drive at midfield. Waimea runs the ball on its first eight plays, rolling up 39 yards to get to first-and-10 on the Raiders’ 11. Waimea tries three more runs but ‘Iolani holds. Cody Taniguchi kicks a 26-yard field goal and the Menehunes take the early 3-0 lead. 4:52, Q1.

2:05 p.m.: ‘Iolani will start the opening possession on its 20. Raiders go three-and-out. Solid start for the Waimea defense.
