GAME NIGHT 8/12: Pearl City/Kalani

Two teams who have their sights set on the OIA playoffs begin their Division II seasons at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium as Pearl City and Kalani square off in a game that could mean a lot toward the end of the season with five schools (Waipahu, Waialua, Kaimuki) all finishing over .500 last season in the race for four playoff berths.

Kalani starts on offense in first OT period at the 20. Paulsson Solomon gets another sack and Kalani loses 7 yards. Holden with the rush back to original line of scrimmage and it’s third-and-10. Tina-Sobarano stopped for a loss of 10. Solomon trips him up for a tackle for loss but is hurt on the play. He’s had a monster game. Fourth-and-21 and Falcons go for it. Deep ball is batted away by Kasey Kikuyama. Kalani comes up empty.

Chargers ball on the 20 and Asinsin finds Calvin Mock DEEP for a 34-yard gain into Kalani territory. Pass to Quillopo-Jamile is good for 13 yards to the 31. Incomplete pass and the fourth quarter is over. OT we go.

ONSIDES KICK AND Matthew Wu recovers for Kalani. HERE WE GO. 2:21 to go. Ball on Pearl City 44. Tina-Sobarano hits Zachary Wong for 12 yards to the 32. First down. Tina-Sobarano hits Tagad for 8 yards to the 25 and then Pearl City jumps on third-and-2. First down at the 20. 1:22 to go. Tina-Sobarano runs to the 14 and then an easy face-mask penalty call on the Chargers. First-and-goal at the 7. 1:15 to go. Tina-Sobarano throws one just off the fingertips of Tagad at the 1 who probably would have gotten in. Second down. Tina-Sobarano rushes for no gain. Timeout Kalani. Third-and-goal. Less than a minute to go. Pass to the end zone. INCOMPLETE. Fourth down. It’s all on the line here. Timeout Kalani. Tina-Sobarano rolls out and he fires back across the middle. Joshua Titialii is there. TOUCHDOWN KALANI. 7-yard TD pass. McClellan to kick the XP after a delay of game. And it’s WIDE LEFT. We’re tied.

Kalani gets it out to the 8 but has to punt from there. No the Falcons line up to go for it from their own 8. Pearl City calls timeout. Kalani fakes the punt and Tina-Sobarano picks up 14 for the first down to the 22. Tina-Sobarano now taking on on just about every play and he picks up 11 yards to midfield. Third-and-2 from midfield. Justin Yasutake with a 4-yard run to pick up a first down in Pearl City territory. Tina-Sobarano finds a wide open Ryu Yamane for 28 yards to the 21. Tina-Sobarano hits the spin button and picks up 4 yards inside the 10 to the 9. Pass again to Yamane for 5 yards to the 4. More dancing from Tina-Sobarano who finds Logan Matsuoka for a 4-yard TD with 2:25 to go. It’s not over yet.

A 52-yard punt is downed at the 1.

Chargers start on the Kalani 48. Pearl City has dominated field position all game. Chargers go three-and-out as game has really slowed down on offense for both teams.

Kalani ball on its 25 to start the final 12 minutes. Kalani goes three-and-out. Tina-Sobarano 6-9, 67 yards.

Quillopo-Jamile with a 21-yard reception on third-and-14 to move the chains at the Kalani 21. A roughing-the-passer penalty on Kalani moves the ball to the 11. Khan hits a 29-yard field goal to put Pearl City up 16-3.

Kalani can’t do much as Tupuola-Fetui gets his second sack and then Kody Kikuyama gets a sack to force a punt.

Chargers ball on the 30 after an 18-yard punt. Holding penalty moves them back to the 41. Cooper runs twice for 18 yards but the quick pass to Calvin Mock on third-and-3 is stopped for no gain. Chargers call timeout on fourth down. Asinsin has a man deep but he overthrows him and it’s a turnover on downs.

Kalani will start on its 22. Falcons go three-and-out as Chargers LB Alihikaua Rodrigues gets a sack on third down.

Kalani fumbles the punt and RJ Kami with his second fumble recovery of the game with 36 seconds remaining at the Kalani 17. Cooper with a 9-yard carry on a delay to the 8. Third-and-1. Timeout Chargers with 24 ticks on the clock. Asinsin stopped for no gain and Khan kicks a 25-yard field goal with 11 seconds remaining.

Chargers start on the Kalani 47 with 1:42 to go. LB Matthew Yu throws Asinsin down for a 9-yard loss. Two incomplete passes and a punt inside a minute.

Kalani ball on its 20. Falcons going the wrong way as Paulsson Solomon gets a sack for the Chargers and then Tina-Sobarano loses 2 on the run. Timeout Kalani with 2:44 left. Tina-Sobarano scrambles for 10 but nowhere near the marker. Falcons three-and-out.

Chargers start from their 35 after kickoff goes out of bounds. Andre Carter with two tough runs for 11 total yards to move the chains. Six runs net 41 yards but then Cooper looses 5 yards and nearly the ball trying an option play. Asinsin with a backwards pass to Micah Quillopo-Jamile who finds Dayton Hernandez for a 24-yard TD. Chargers catch Kalani off guard. 10-3, 4:01.

Falcons go for it and Holden picks up 7 yards for the first down. First deep ball is ON THE MONEY to Tagad for 35 yards. Add on a roughing the passer and it’s first-and-goal at the 4. Third-and-goal and Tina-Sobarano tries to get outside but Zion Tupuola-Fetui throws him down for an aggressive sack. Wayne McClellan boots a 25-yard field goal.

Falcons start on their 15. Travis Tagad with a 12-yard reception on Seth Tina-Sobarano‘s first pass. Falcons fourth-and-1 at the 49 as quarter ends.

Joshua Titialii blows up a screen pass for a loss of 3 and it’s third-and-13. Incomplete and Khan will try a 47-yard field goal. Nope. Delay of game and Pearl City will punt instead.


Falcons will start on their 22. Ikaika Holden with the carry and fumbles on first offensive play. RJ Kami on the recovery for the Chargers.

Pearl City will receive. Chargers start from their 34. Isaiah Asinsin at QB. Asinsin starts with a 6-yard completion and then Makoa Cooper carries twice for 8 yards. Steady diet of runs behind Cooper and a Kalani penalty results in a first-and-10 for PC at the Falcons 28. Chargers chewing up clock on opening drive. Holding penalty hurts Chargers and Kalani calls timeout at third-and-goal from the 16. A second straight incomplete pass from a scrambling Asinsin and Chargers will try a field goal. Zameer Khan‘s 33-yard field goal is GOOD. Nearly six minutes on the opening drive.
