GAME NIGHT 8/11: McKinley/Roosevelt

McKinley quarterback Elyjah-Dane Badua was sacked by Roosevelt’s Elijah Byers in a game last season. The Tigers have a home field to practice on, but no stadium seating or stadium lighting to host home games. Bruce Asato / Honolulu Star-Advertiser.

The OIA Division II season kicks off with McKinley, looking for its first win since 2013, facing Roosevelt, which opens its season after Kaiser pulled out of a scheduled game last week due to a lack of available players. The Tigers scored a touchdown in a 27-7 loss to Pac-Five last week at Skippa Diaz Stadium. Roosevelt has won the last two meetings by a combined score of 80-14.

8:46: Roosevelt recovers a fumble on the McKinley 26 and take knees to end the game. Impressive season opener for the Rough Riders, who are now 1-0.

8:40: Roosevelt’s Myka Kukahiwa adds a 4-yard touchdown rush for good measure. PAT is good. It’s now 33-0 with 1:53 to go.

8:36: McKinley turns it over on downs and Roosevelt will take over on the Tigers’ 17 with 3:46 left to go.

8:31: McKinley starting its next drive on its own 31 with 4:20 to go.

8:30: Mitchell Camacho wills his way to the end zone for a 34-yard touchdown reception. What initially looked like a small gain on a screen pass turned into a touchdown with a handful of broken tackles. PAT is no good, but this game has been out of reach for a while. Rough Riders leads 26-0 with 4:26 to go.

8:20: Rough Riders get the stop and take over on their own 29 with 9:03 left. No reason for them to stop running the ball at this point in the game.

8:19: McKinley calls its first timeout of the second half facing fourth-and-9 on the McKinley 37. They have to convert here if they want any chance of staying in the game.

8:06: Tigers to take over from their own 30 with 11:02 left.

8:04: Jared Elwin takes an option pitch, reverses field, and navigates his way into the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. Tully-Sabong’s extra point is no good. Roosevelt leads 20-0 with 11:09 left in the game.

FOURTH QUARTER

8:01: The third quarter ends with Roosevelt in the McKinley red zone. Rough Riders will start the fourth quarter on the McKinley 20.

7:51: Three-and-out for McKinley this time. Roosevelt takes over from its own 37 with 3:03 left in the third.

7:47: Three-and-out for the Rough Riders. Tigers take over from their own 45 with 5:07 left in the third

7:43: Rough Riders call a timeout on second-and-9. 5:52 left in the third.

7:42: Tigers go for it in Roosevelt territory but to no avail. Rough Riders take over from their own 29 with 6:23 to go.

7:33: Tigers to start from their own 30.

THIRD QUARTER

7:13: Tigers run out the clock to end the half. They’ll receive to start the second half.

7:12: Consecutive penalties before the snap have the Tigers on their own 20.

7:10: Tigers will try to cut into the deficit, they will start from their own 30 with 1:23 to go in the half.


7:08: Iijima takes a quarterback sneak down the middle and Tully-Sabog’s extra point is good. Rough Riders lead 14-0 with 1:33 left in the half.

7:07: Fourth-and-goal for Roosevelt at the 1, and they call time with 1:37 left. Six different players have run the ball so far for them, let’s see who they call on to punch it in here.

7:02: Jared Elwin picks off Ahina and brings it back to the McKinley 26. 4:17 left to go in the half. Ahina just tried to do too much there when he should have just thrown it away.

7:00: Kekahuna fumbles on a read option and the Tigers will take over from their own 25. 5:!8 left in the half, let’s see if they can tie it up before then.

6:59: McKinley calls timeout after Roosevelt is driving again. Rough Riders have a first-and-10 from the Tigers’ 24. 5:24 to go in the half.

6:57: Roosevelt forces McKinley another punt and will take over from their own 43 with 5:53 left in the half.

6:51: Laulii Iosefa is down for McKinley after catching a swing pass for a loss of five yards. He would be another big loss for the Tigers, as he has proved to be a force on both sides of the ball early this season. 7:12 left in the half, still 7-0 Roosevelt.

6:45: TOUGHDOWN ROOSEVELT. Right after I say that, Shastyn Kekahuna hits Samuel Baang in stride, a total dime for a 40-yard touchdown. Kawai Tully-Sabog adds the extra point. Rough Riders lead 7-0 with 8:49 to go in the half.

6:43: Rough Riders are driving, and they’re doing so from their ground attack. They’ve only attempted one pass this entire game. Now on the Roosevelt 31.

SECOND QUARTER

6:39: End of the first. Rough Riders face third-and-1 on their own 48.

6:36: Hieu Huyhn‘s 31-yard field goal attempt is wide and the Rough Riders take over.

6:33: Consecutive holding calls have really killed the Tigers here. They’re now on the Roosevelt 14.

6:30: Tigers really driving here. QB Kaiwi Ahina is really extending plays with his feet here and McKinley has a first-and-goal from the Roosevelt 6 with 3:05 to go in the first quarter.

6:24: Tigers running back Jonah Stephens appears to be injured after getting hit on an incomplete screen pass. it could be a huge loss for McKinley, as he carried the ball 18 times for 81 yards last week, both teams highs.

6:20: Roosevelt quarterback Tamaki Iijima laterals a fumble, recovered by McKinley at midfield. Tigers take over with 6:15 to go in the first.

6:19: Three-and-out for the Tigers, who punt from their own endzone. Rough Riders will take over on McKinley’s 37. 6:32 to go in the first.

6:16: The Rough Riders go for it on fourth down from McKinley’s 9 but to no avail. Tigers taking over with 7:27 left to go in the first.

6:10 p.m.: The Rough Riders have run the ball exclusively thus far and now are in McKinley’s 39. Isaiah Rosa is down with an apparent injury for Roosevelt. 10:34 left in the first quarter as teammates and staff tend to him.

6:07 p.m.: Roosevelt to start from its own 36.

6:04 p.m.: Roosevelt will receive the opening kickoff. Here we go.
