GAME NIGHT 10/13: St. Francis/’Iolani

The Saints and Raiders split the two meetings this year with St. Francis winning the first meeting, 43-26, before ‘Iolani took the rematch three weeks later, 45-29. The Saints’ season is done with a loss. ‘Iolani will likely play in the Division II state tournament.

McLeod with the one-handed snag over the middle and he races into the end zone for a 35-yard TD pass from Akana. 43-19, 6:47, Q4.

Shepherd Kekahuna with the INT for the Saints. Second pick of the day for Mizutani. Receiver slowed up clearly thinking he got held.

FOURTH QUARTER begins with the Saints second-and-6 at the ‘Iolani 35. Third-and-3 on the ‘Iolani 10. Mailei still at RB. Mailei hit short of the marker but doesn’t go down and beasts his way to the 7. First down. Aina-Chaves back in. Third-and-goal from the 6. Fourth-and-goal on the 1. The big boys coming in for the Saints. Aina-Chaves stuffed at the 1. ‘Iolani takes over.

Saints ball on their 44 after recovering the onsides kick. Aina-Chaves was a bit shaken up on final play of third quarter so Mailei comes in and picks up 18 yards on first carry.

‘Iolani converts two fourth downs. Kaua Nishigaya with a 4-yard TD run on just his second carry of the game. Bad snap dooms the extra point.

Play-action pass is 71 yards from Akana to Lachmann Atoa. Aina-Chaves gets to the outside and houses a 21-yard TD run. 36-13, 3:49.

Justin Genovia with a 7-yard reception to become the ninth Oahu receiver ever to surpass 2,000 career receiving yards. However he is injured on the play. Raiders drive inside the 10 but Mizutani is picked off on a great leaping catch by Tyson Shimabukuro.

Perfect play-action pass call goes for 32 yards from Akana to McLeod. Aina-Chaves ends the drive with a 4-yard TD run. He’s stopped on the 2-point conversion however.


Third down pass goes through the hands of the receiver and ‘Iolani goes three-and-out.

Saints safety Wembley Mailei misses two opportunities to come up with a pick. Mizutani with two nice scrambles and ‘Iolani calls timeout. Second-and-2 at the Saints 31. 1:26 to go. Raiders use their last timeout at the 8 after three completions. It’s third-and-4 with 33 seconds to go. First down completion to Rayden Kaneshiro at the 3. Mizutani’s pass to Genovia is caught for no gain. Clock is running. Raiders snap it with less than 10 seconds to go. Mizutani scrambles. Corner of the end zone low and Jonah Miyazawa comes up with it. 3-yard TD reception on the final play of the first half. Extra point is blocked. 24-13, Halftime.

Saints call timeout with a third-and-5 at their 37. Akana scrambles to his right and picks up 8 and a first down. Nine runs in nine plays on the drive as Aina-Chaves scores on a 1-yard TD run. 24-7, 2:27.

St. Francis called for roughing the passer and Mizutani is a lttle slow getting up. Now a PI on the Saints. Mizutani eludes a two-man rush, buys time and then a deep throw to Carter Kamana who makes a tough catch near the back of the end zone. Touchdown Raiders on the 35-yard pass play. 16-7, 6:35.

Saints go play action and Akana throws deep but it’s picked off by Pei, who is having a great first half for the Raiders defense.

Taka Lautaha with a big sack of Mizutani on second-and-1 as Mizutani took a deep drop and was looking long. Another high snap and Mizutani does a good job just to get it away. Raiders three-and-out.

SECOND QUARTER starts with the Saints second-and-7 at the ‘Iolani 43. Akana runs to the 37 and is hit and fumbles but the ball goes out of bounds. A steady diet of runs ends with a 14-yard TD run by Aina-Chaves on a pitch to the outside. 16-0, 9:20. Another 2-point conversion by Aina-Chaves.

Third-and-2 and Akana throws a deep ball down the sideline. Incomplete. Fourth-and-2. Swing pass to Aina-Chaves for a big gain but he hurdles a defender, which is illegal. Still results in a gain of 3 for a first down at the 46.

Mizutani with three completions to get ‘Iolani inside the 30. Mizutani with a third-down completion inside the 10 but it’s called back by a hold. Rayden Kaneshiro with a 15-yard reception to the 20. Fourth-and-2. Bad snap is a loss of 23. Turnover on downs.

Saints start on their 35. Saints called for a hold but then Raiders called for a questionable pass interference. Ball on the 45. First official pass by St. Francis is complete to Scott McLeod for 15 yards. Third-and-3 after Aina-Chaves is slow to get up after flipping over in the air and landing hard on his back. Lanakila Pei stuffs Shimabukuro for no gain and then he stuffs Aina-Chaves or a loss of 2 on fourth down. Turnover on downs.

Raiders start on the 36. A holding call moves ‘Iolani back 15 yards. Mizutani completes two passes for 13 yards but throws it out of bounds on third down. ‘Iolani will punt.

Sophomore Ope Laloulu (6-7, 370) starts at left tackle for St. Francis (knee). RB Jonan Aina-Chaves gets 8, 6 and 9 on his first three runs. Saints run it eight times in a row on the drive with Tyson Shimabukuro breaking loose for a 30-yard TD run. Aina-Chaves run it in for 2. 8-0, 8:27.
