Campbell looks like a complete team

Here they come, so have fun stopping them.

Teammate Austin May changes the rhythm by taking draws up the middle with a combination of timing, toughness and speed.

And then there’s Ezra Savea, who is only a sophomore at quarterback, throwing accurate passes in his first varsity football start.

Add in some sure-handed targets like Kona Reiny-Aloy and the rangy Jayce Bantolina, along with a hungry line, and you’ve got the makings of a balanced and potent offense.

What else would you expect from a team ranked No. 7 in the Honolulu Star-Advertiser’s Top 10?

It took a little while, but Campbell (2-0) started handing it off and pounding with its ground game to finally wear Na Menehune down in the second half of Friday’s 34-6 win at home.

Moanalua was coming off an upset of then-No. 8 Waianae and maybe ready to assert itself in Ewa Beach, where a win could have vaulted Na Menehune into the Top 10. Once the Campbell offense started rolling, however, that just wasn’t going to happen.

And we haven’t even started on the Sabers’ defense yet.

Campbell held Moanalua to six points just one week after Na Menehune went into Waianae and put up 30 points.

The touchdown Moanalua scored against Campbell was one of pure skill, one that probably would have worked, no matter the opponent. Kawika Keama-Jacobe, a scrambler who has a gun of an arm, bolted to the right to escape the rush and then threw a bullet across his body while on the run to Michael Feliciano for a 14-yard score.

That was it. No more points all night long. Moanalua also missed a chance to take a lead when Thomas Sheridan missed on a 40-yard field goal while trailing 7-6.

Campbell defensive end Tristen Ludiazo, who Kapolei coach and OC 16 announcer Darren Hernandez projects to be playing at a Pac-12 caliber school next year, had two sacks of Keama-Jacobe. He nearly had a third sack, but Na Menehune’s senior quarterback just got back to the line of scrimmage as he was being tripped up by Ludiazo.

With an interception that led to a touchdown drive, Zibrex Cabel was also instrumental in the Sabers’ defensive performance.

Moanalua had some big-time defensive hounds in the game, too. Walter Peters recovered a fumble and dropped Johnson for a 5-yard loss. Kea Rodriguez contributed with an interception of Savea, and Logan Serikawa had a sack.

Bouncing back won’t be easy for Moanalua (1-1), which hosts Farrington next Friday.

Can Campbell climb in the polls this week? It will be tough to crack that top six, no matter what. Consistent grinding, accurate passing and more hard-nosed defense — week after week — along with wins against top teams is what’s needed to sway voters.

After taking next weekend off, the Sabers play at home against Kailua in two weeks, followed by a game at No. 9 Kapolei and then a return home to meet No. 2 Mililani.
