2020 State Championships

TOP SEED: Erin Hikiji, Mililani
2019 state fourth (97)
2020 OIA champion (97)

Erin Hikiji of Mililani’s narrow win over Campbell’s Jazmyn Enriquez to take her OIA title looks even more important now.

Hikiji earned the top seed in the state tournament for her victory, and can take heart in knowing that the wrestler in that position has navigated the lightest bracket at states to win in six of the last seven years. Even more impressive, a league champion has won every year since Angelee Homa of Aiea in 2003.

With contenders Victoria Lee, Kennedy Javier and Jacinta Fonoti in good position to reach the top step this year, Hikiji could help give the Trojans multiple state champions for the first time since Quinn Nagatani and Morgan Yamaguchi did it in 2012.

Hikiji, who finished fourth last year, could be the first Mililani girl to win the state’s lowest weight class.

Quadrant 1

Hikiji is all set up for the semifinals, facing Tariann Thompson of Radford in the first round and either Maui’s Hayley Sedino or Nanci Nakagawa of Punahou in the quarterfinals. None of those three have ever wrestled at states while Hikiji won three matches last year. Hikiji beat Thompson 17-2 during the season but Nakagawa looked strong against Zoe Omura before being pinned in the ILH championships.

Quadrant 2

BIIF champion Andrea Faldonea is the top seed here but watch out for Moanalua’s Caitlin Yap. Yap is a senior who is wrestling in her fourth state tournament and has won a match in all three but never placed. Yap, who needs to get past Angelina Godoy-Holt of Kapolei in the preliminaries, has been on the mat with hammers Jazmyn Enriquez, Zoe Omura and Madison Kogachi this year while Faldonea had to settle for BIIF competition. Faldonea does have state experience, winning a match after being pinned by Hikiji in the opening round last year. Naiomi Kulukulu-Sales of Lahinaluna and Damien’s Jenesis Pereirra are on the other side of the quarter, neither of them have wrestled at states before. Kulukulu-Sales is battle hardened, facing Liana Ferreira of Baldwin all season and spending almost a minute on the mat with Hikiji at Paani.

Quadrant 3

This quad will be one of the highlights of the first day of the tournament, with top seed Liana Ferreira of Baldwin expecting to meet state champion Jazmyn Enriquez. Ferreira finished third last year, avenging a close loss to Hikiji before beating her in the final match. Hikiji avenged that loss at Officials and Paani, but the last one was an overtime affair. Ferreira will face either Kalaheo’s Alexia Parsons or tricky Cheville Gumban of Farrington in her first match. Gumban won a match in the tournament last year while Parsons is making her first appearance. Enriquez gets another state rookie in McKinley’s Amanda Begonia in her first match. Enriquez’s eight wins (five by pin) over her three-year career are the most in the bracket.

Quadrant 4

Three-time ILH queen Zoe Omura is the top seed here and the junior is just waiting to break through. She finished third as a freshman — including two wins over Enriquez — before being knocked off the podium by Ferreira as a sophomore. She has never lost in the opening round and draws either Kellysa-Ichiko Pauole of KS-Maui or Kristi Hirayama of Kalani this time. Waianae’s Madison Kalamau and Giana Ragudos of Aiea are in the matchup for the right to meet Omura if she advances. It is Kalamau’s second appearance at states and the third for Ragudos, who won three matches last year after just one the year before. Kalamau hung tough with Moanalua’s Isabelle Asuncion at Officials. Ragudos has an impressive pin of MIL 102-pound champion Nalani Kirkman at Officials. Kalamau pinned Kirkland in the same tournament, 41 seconds after Ragudos managed it.
