This is the third straight final for Punahou, which lost to Kahuku each of the last two seasons. Mililani is trying for its first-ever state […]

Legends in the making: Punahou vs. Farrington

By Jerry Campany on November 14, 2013

Friday’s second semifinal in the First Hawaiian Bank/HHSAA Division I state football semifinals pits two of the most storied programs in the state. But for all of the big wins Punahou and Farrington have shared over the years, they are better known for stumbling near the end. Only Saint Louis (35) has won the ILH more often than Punahou (24), but unlike the Crusaders the Buffanblu have struggled to seal the deal, getting to the state championship four times and […]

Part 1 Part 2 Part 3 (post game) Punahou won the ILH championship with a 38-12 win over Kamehameha. It is easy to forget, sometimes, how dominant this Kamehameha offense line and defense were this season. The Warriors have a grand total of two losses, and both came against No. 1 Punahou. It’s been a special year for ILH football. Punahou remains unbeaten after this 38-12 win over Kamehameha, and this follows a string of games that included a trip […]

Update: Punahou 24, Kamehameha 0, final

By Paul Honda on September 14, 2013

8:02 p.m. We’re a few minutes away from kickoff. Kamehameha in navy blue jerseys, pants and helmets. Punahou in white jerseys, pants and blue helmet. Good crowd here at Aloha Stadium. Canton Kaumatule looked good in pre-game warmups. 8:10 p.m. Punahou misses two opportunities: Larry Tuileta missed a wide-open receiver at the pylon, and was just a bit off on a screen pass to Kotoni Sekona on a big blitz by Kamehameha. Charles McDonald was short on a 47-yard field-goal […]

Noa better: expectations high for Punahou receiver

By Jerry Campany on August 6, 2013

Last year during the preseason, the Punahou football team wasn’t sure what it had at receiver. But the Buffs’ fears were put to rest when sophomore Kanawai Noa caught six passes for 176 yards and four touchdowns in the season opener against West Anchorage. He went on to become one of the best receivers in the state despite missing two games with an ankle injury. When they reported for camp this year, coach Kale Ane had to be salivating over […]

Alexander field grows up

By Jerry Campany on August 3, 2013

When Kamehameha beat Punahou 6-0 on October 31, 1903, it was the first meeting between the schools, and they have played either 179 or 180 times since, depending on if they played once or twice in 1977 (that still has to be researched). According to this list from Wikipedia … List of high school football rivalries (100 years+) … nothing else in the country even approaches the rivalry as far as number of games played. Nothing else, not even Harvard-Yale, […]
