Kaneshiro’s record-setting season ends

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 13, 2013

Moanalua’s season ended with a 54-17 loss to Leilehua on Friday night, also capping a record-breaking senior season for quarterback Micah Kaneshiro. Kaneshiro completed 28 of 46 passes for 295 yards and two touchdowns in his final game for Na Menehune. Pressed into duty early in his junior year, the 5-foot-7, 170-pounder finished his senior year with 2,719 yards and 25 touchdowns against six interceptions. “I just told him I appreciate him and how much he’s grown so much from […]

Kailua goes out on a high note

By Jerry Campany on October 13, 2013

Kailua coach Gary Rosolowich might have a hard time getting his kids to turn in their pads this year. The Surfiders wrapped up a disappointing season with the rally of a lifetime in the fourth quarter of their 42-24 playoff loss at Kapolei on Friday night. The Surfriders closed out their third straight losing season with a 2-7 record. “We just told the kids to keep on going,” Rosolowich said. “We wanted them to change the reality on the field […]

Quintero provides inspiration for Leilehua

By Jason Kaneshiro on October 12, 2013

Even while sitting in a wheelchair, Bryan Quintero might have been trying to devise a way onto the field Friday night. Quintero, a Leilehua senior, recently had surgery to insert a metal rod in his lower leg and returned to the sideline for the Mules’ OIA Red playoff game against Moanalua. He watched the proceedings wearing his jersey and shoulder pads as Leilehua rolled to a 54-17 win to advance to the quarterfinals. “I think he was trying to wheel […]

Kapolei can catch it

By Jerry Campany on October 12, 2013

Kapolei can run the ball, that is no secret. But heading into its playoff game against Farrington, it showed it can throw it a little bit, too. Quarterback Aizon Kahana passed for 203 yards in the Hurricanes’ 42-27 win over Kailua in the first round of the OIA playoffs on Friday, just his second game with more than 200 yards passing this season. That he did it is enough to make Governors coach Randall Okimoto sit up and take notice. […]

McKinley, Leilehua, Kapolei all win

By Billy Hull on October 11, 2013

The opening round of the OIA Red playoffs got underway Friday night with three games that were decided by the end of the third quarter. McKinley will play Campbell in the playoffs for the second straight year after a 36-15 win over Waipahu at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. Quarterback Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta threw four first-half touchdown passes to give coach Joe Cho and the Tigers their first OIA Red playoff victory since 2002, when they advanced to the Division I state semifinals. […]

Update: McKinley 36, Waipahu 15, final

By Paul Honda on October 11, 2013

First Quarter 5:54 – The Tigers score on their second series, a 48-yard bomb from Mathias Tuitele-Iafeta to Tyrell Tuiasosopo. Two surprises here. One, Waipahu had solo coverage on Tuiasosopo, one of the best WR talents in the state. Two, MTI threw it a long, high ways. His arm strength is way beyond what I expected. I saw him throw a play-action lob for a TD recently, but this long stuff is a surprise. PAT kick was blocked. Tigers 6, […]
