New coach? Sort of.

At Kapolei, longtime coach Bryce Kaneshiro stepped down as boys soccer coach to become the new athletic director at Waialua. In his place, longtime — 12 years each — assistants Mark Ishii, Ryan Lau and Neal Sakaue have been named co-head coaches.

Ishii played for ‘Iolani’s state championship team in 1988. Lau played at Saint Louis and was an ILH all-star, graduated in ’92, and went on to play for St. Mary’s and San Diego State. He also played for the Hawaii Tsunami in the mid-’90s.

Sakaue, a ’92 Punahou graduate, was an ILH all-star and played on four state-championship teams. He was also a team captain for the Buffanblu.

For a third year in a row, Kapolei will host the Oahu Interleague Soccer Showcase Thursday through Saturday. The tourney includes ‘Iolani, Kamehameha and Punahou of the ILH, and Kalani and Mililani of the OIA.
