APRIL 10, 1980: Iolani’s Paul Tonaki finishes the job

Kamehameha's Nathan Lorenzo was tagged out at home by Iolani catcher Allen Yoshihara.

On this day in 1980, Iolani pitcher Paul Tonaki made good on a second chance.

Grant Uyeno got Tonaki out of a jam in the seventh inning and Iolani beat Kamehameha 9-3 at Iolani.

Tonaki was cruising to the win when the Warriors loaded the bases with two outs in the seventh inning when Uyeno came to the rescue. Tonaki took the hill and put zeroes up for the final two innings.

Things turned out OK for Kamehameha, though, as the Warriors went on to win the ILH for Ed Allen‘s first title. The Warriors went on to win the state title as the ILH’s lone representative, beating Maui 8-1, Waipahu 5-2 and Kaiser 11-7.
