Punahou beat Mira Costa 25-20 in the first set of a match pitting powers from Hawaii and California. The set was close throughout until Remo Gaogao took over with three straight kills to turn a 21-20 advantage to 24-20. Marissa Behrens provided the capper with a kill from the middle.

Punahou pushed Mira Costa to the edge in the second set, beating the Mustangs 25-21 behind five more kills by Gaogao.

Seabury Hall lost the first set to Mira Costa 25-12 after being swept by Punahou early this morning. Don’t read too much into it, though. The scrappy Spartans have only seven players suited up. The Spartans get 15 minutes off before playing ‘Iolani2, which pushed Punahou for half a set earlier, at noon. Sage Hill and Hawaii Baptist play at the same time, with Punahou and Mira Costa to follow. The Spartans lost the second set to Mira Costa 25-15.

Zucco split his squad up and left the other half home to play in a tournament there. He said he has about four starters on the trip with him. The Spartans didn’t let their circumstances bother them in the first set against ‘Iolani2, controlling things throughout to win 25-15. Kiki Leuteneker, Sophie Janssen and Gabby Ratte each had four kills against the Raiders. ‘Iolani2 came out of the break a different team, forcing Seabury Hall to call a timeout down 17-14 in the second set. The rest didn’t help, as ‘Iolani2 won the second set handily. The Spartans stopped messing around in the third, beating the Raiders 15-6 with kills from six of their seven players.
