Hinano Higa stepped down as the Roosevelt girls basketball coach, Rough Riders athletic director John Chung confirmed Thursday.

“She just felt like it was time to step away,” Chung wrote via text message. “She actually talked to me about it a couple of years ago.”

And so it goes with quality head coaches. Sometimes they can’t leave to tend to other obligations — or just to take a break from the grind — even if they want to.

Higa was an assistant under Bobby Keanini prior to taking the head job with the Rough Riders in the 2009 season.

Higa led Roosevelt to Oahu Interscholastic Association Division I championships in 2014 and 2015, when she was named the league’s coach of the year and when the Rough Riders also placed fourth in the state.

Chung is looking for a new girls basketball head coach. Resumes can be sent to Roosevelt High School, attn: John Chung, 1120 Nehoa St., Honolulu, HI, 96822. Resumes will be accepted until Sept. 22.
