ON THIS DATE IN 2007: Punahou stuns national girls hoops power

On this date in 2007, Punahou senior Shawna Lei Kuehu scored 24 points, grabbed 11 rebounds and had two steals to lead the Buffanblu to a 47-39 win over Narbonne in the semifinals of the first Girls Iolani Classic.

Kuehu had more than half of her team’s points and was aided by Tessa Torres with eight and Dara Tompkison with seven.

Future Arizona standout Reiko Thomas led the Gauchos with 19 points, but her coach believes it should have been more. Narbonne coach Victoria Sanders blamed officiating for the loss.

“If the game had been called right, then I think there would have been a different outcome,” Sanders said.

Kuehu was limited to five points the next night, losing 45-35 to Redondo Union. Atonye Nyingifa led the way with 14 points to become the first Iolani girls champion.
