Konawaena loses TOC opener

Bummer news from Chandler, Ariz.: Edgewater (Fla.) ousted Konawaena 39-34 today in the opening round of the Nike Tournament of Champions, John Anderson Division.

Edgewater features the No. 16 player in the nation and was ranked No. 47 as a team by ESPN, just four notches below No. 43 Konawaena. USA Today ranks Konawaena at No. 13 after the Wildcats swept Bishop Gorman (Nev.), Oregon City and Brea Olinda (Calif.) last week to win the ‘Iolani Classic.

Konawaena’s loss may surprise local fans, but it definitely surprised writers and scouts at ESPN. Four of the five who are covering the Nike TOC predicted Konawaena would reach the semifinal round. Brea Olinda is also in the same division.
