Day 1: Maryknoll tops Miramonte at ‘Iolani Classic

Maryknoll will take on Southridge (Ore.) and Oregon City will meet Centennial in the semifinals of the ‘Iolani Classic girls tournament tonight.

The Maryknoll-Southridge game tips off at approximately 6:30 p.m., followed by Oregon City-Centennial at 8 p.m.

In consolation play, Kalani is playing Miramonte in a 3:30 p.m. game and ‘Iolani will face Naha Senior at 5 p.m.


Thursday’s capsules

Southrige (Ore.) 66, Kalani 39
Cameron Brink, a 6-foot-4 sophomore, poured in 24 points and dominated the boards as the Skyhawks ousted the Lady Falcons from title contention. Maggie Freeman, a 5-11 senior guard, added 13 points. Southridge led 20-8 after one quarter and 44-24 at the half.

Alayna Akiona led Kalani with 10 points and Logan Luke added nine.

The Skyhawks went 27-2 last season and won the Oregon 6A state title. They beat Oregon City 45-27 in the final.

Maryknoll 67, Miramonte (Calif.) 59
Kamalu Kamakawiwo‘ole
scored 15 points to lead a balanced Spartans attack. Point guard Rhianne Omori added 14 points, and Kodee Viena and Chayse Milne had 11 each for Maryknoll, the No. 1 team in the Star-Advertiser Top 10 poll.


Clair Steele, a senior point guard, paced the Matadors with 22 points. Steele is a commit to Lehigh Erin Tarasow added 10 points and Samantha Johnston had eight.

Miramonte was 30-4 last season and closed CIF play with a conference title and a No. 14 ranking statewide.

Oregon City (Ore.) 56, ‘Iolani 54
Kylie Guelsdorf scored 14, Brooke Bullock tallied 13 and Kaari Guelsdorf chipped in 12 for the Pioneers, who were 21-7 last season, finishing second in the Oregon 6A state tourney.

Centennial (Nev.) 58, Naha Senior (Okinawa) 36
Justice Ethridge
scored 14 and Taylor Bigby had 12 for the Bulldogs. Eboni Walker chipped in nine points. Centennial captured the Nevada 4A state championship last season.


Miyu Kinjou tallied nine points and Yukako Itokazu added eight for the Bears. Naha is the five-time Okinawa champion.
