APRIL 28, 1998: Brandy Richardson and Onaona Miller win titles

Punahou's Onaona Miller and Brandy Richardson of Kalaheo had quite a rivalry in the late 1990s.

On this day in 1998, Punahou won the ILH girls basketball championship and Kalaheo clinched the OIA East.

Onaona Miller led the Buffanblu with 22 points and Brandy Richardson tallied 12 to take care of Farrington 72-37.

Both stars made it to the state tournament and had to know that a showdown was in their futures. It happened in the state final, where the Buffanblu beat the Mustangs 64-51 to break Kalaheo’s 27-game winning streak.

Miller, who transferred from Hilo, had 22 points and 11 rebounds while Richardson scored 11 and pulled down 13 rebounds in her sophomore final. It was Miller’s second-straight state championship and she was named the tournament MVP. Richardson owned the OIA but never won a state championship.

Kalaheo beat Punahou twice in the preseason.
