Aloha Akaka was named most valuable player, joined on the all-tournament team by teammates Mahalo Akaka, Kyla Neumann and Serenity Moananu as Maryknoll routed host Glendora 70-45 on Monday in the final of the Glendora Holiday Classic in California.
The Lady Spartans completed the tournament 4-0. Coach Chico Furtado saw his team play its best basketball in the title game.
“We shot the ball well. We were balanced inside and out. We rebounded. We had only four turnovers and we defended,” he said. “Our three captains Aloha, Mahalo and Serenity played with a lot of energy and our role/sub players impacted the game when they were called upon. It was nice to finally see some consistency over an entire game.”
Sixth-ranked Maryknoll (10-4, 1-3 ILH) will host No. 3 Kamehameha on Friday.
“Hopefully, this tournament is the start of the consistency that we are looking for and it will carry over to the rest of our season. We’ll see,” Furtado added.
The Spartans normally travel every two years.
“I like to travel as much as possible. It gives our team the opportunity to play varying levels of competition, learn to live with each other and brings our players and staff closer,” Furtado said. “We all take care of each other. I was so proud and happy with our team on the road this year. I may request that we travel again next year if our athletic administration will allow us.”
