On Thursday and Friday, Hawaii Prep World will run a series of snippets focusing on eight players we dub as Honolulu Star-Advertiser “Unsung Scrappers.”

One player from each of the Oahu Interscholastic Association’s eight teams involved in this weekend’s Division I quarterfinals were chosen by their head coaches.

SEVENTH IN A SERIES

KAILUA’S DARIUS MARTIN

>> Position: Defensive back
>> Grade: Senior
>> Height: 5 feet 9
>> Weight: 155 pounds
>> Jersey number: 22

SURFRIDERS head coach Joe Wong on Darius Martin:

“Darius can play strong safety or free safety. Every week, he comes out and week in and week out, he gets better and better. He’s a returnee from last year and he does everything we ask of him. He is one of our starters and he tries to bring everybody up. He keeps plugging away and keeps everybody’s spirits up during the whole week of practice this season. He also plays special teams. Last year, he was not a starter and he has come a long way since then. He has a lot of athletic ability and he has worked real hard to be where he’s at right now. He has put in the time, learned the system real well with the defensive coaches and is always bringing the secondary guys up.”
