WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS
1. Kanawai Noa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 99
6-1, 185, Sr.
∆∆ #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 7-242, 3 TD (45,43,80)
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 2-36 PR 66-yd TD
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 rec 3-83, TD (37)
∆∆ Total rec 12-361, 4 TD; 30.1 YPR; 120.3 YPG
PR – TD
Extra point: He does anything asked of him, from running deep routes and possession routes with equal effectiveness, as well as returning kicks. Where he lands after high school will be interesting. The ILH has produced an SEC wideout (Jeremy Tabuyo/Saint Louis/Texas A&M) and a MWC wideout (Devon Stubblefield/Saint Louis/UH) in the past two years.

2. Tsubasa Brennan, Pac-Five >> Pupule rating: 96
6-1, 170, Sr.
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike Aug 16 rec 19-292, 4 TD (15,52,29,55)
∆∆ vs St. Francis (Aloha) Aug 19 rec 11-144, 2 TD (17,31)
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 14-119, TD (19)
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 8-73
∆∆ Total rec 52-628, 7 TD; 12.1 YPR; 157 YPG
Extra point: Though ‘Iolani kept Brennan out of the end zone for the first time this year, the field opened up for teammates Sean Kinel (4-77-1) and Jarrod Infante (9-150-1). He has sure hands and great chemistry with QB Kainoa Ferreira. Question for the Wolfpack is whether they’re content to let Brennan be a double-team draw or draw up something a little more creative to get him more targets, especially in the red zone.

3. Kalakaua Timoteo, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 94
6-1, 195, Jr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 9-167, TD (17)
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 rec 4-134, TD (78)
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 30 rec 6-79
∆∆ @ Aiea Sept 12 rec 4-165, TD (53)
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 rec 5-57, TD (11)
∆∆ Total rec 28-602, 4 TD; 21.5 YPR; 120.4 YPG
Extra point: As a big receiver, Timoteo is a security blanket for the Trojans when defenses decide to stack the box against RB Vavae Malepeai and QB McKenzie Milton. But Timoteo took a hit to the right shoulder in the Campbell game and he sat the rest of the way.

4. Jayce Bantolina, Campbell >> Pupule rating: 93
6-2, 205, Sr.
∆∆ vs Castle Aug 15 rec 5-69, TD (34)
∆∆ vs Moanalua Aug 22 rec 6-74, TD (16)
∆∆ vs Kailua Sept 5 rec 2-41, TD (15)
∆∆ @ Kapolei Sept 12 rec 9-170, 2 TD (13,75)
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Sept 19 rec 5-111, TD (47)
∆∆ Total rec 27-455, 6 TD; 16.9 YPR; 91 YPG
Extra point: Defenses know the Sabers will look for Bantolina deep and they still haven’t stopped him. He has an extra gear in his jet pack and gets to just about every deep ball first.

5. (tie) Kainoa Wilson, Mililani >> Pupule rating 91 (INJ)
5-11, 155, Sr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 8-161, 2 TD (6,15) pass 1-1-0-33
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 30 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 12 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ Total rec 8-161, 2 TD; 20.1 YPR; 161 YPG
Extra point: Timoteo’s emergence cushioned the blow early in the season when Wilson got hurt. Now that Timoteo may be out for some time, the Trojans probably could use Wilson more than ever. Collarbone injuries normally take 5-6 weeks to heal. He might be due back soon.

5. (tie) Jason Sharsh, Moanalua >> Pupule rating: 91
5-9, 152, Sr.
∆∆ @ #8 Waianae Aug 15 rec 5-89, 2 TD (14,28)
∆∆ @ #7 Campbell Aug 22 DNP (back)
∆∆ vs #5 Farrington Aug 29 DNP (back)
∆∆ vs Kapolei Sept 5 rec 5-94
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 19 rec 11-232, 2 TD (31,26), 2-pt catch rush 1-4
∆∆ Total rec 21-415, 4 TD; 19.8 YPR; 138.3 YPG
2-pt reception
rush 1-4
Extra point: No question, Sharsh is back (no pun intended). He was due for a strong senior year until he got injured. With a healthy Sharsh, Moanalua’s wide-open passing offense becomes a headache for defensive coordinators to game plan against.

7. (tie) Allan Cui, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 90
5-8, 160, Sr.
∆∆ vs #3 Mililani Aug 16 rec 10-112, 2 TD (7,17)
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rec 4-29
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 3-30
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 5-54, TD (10)
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 rec 4-69, TD (21)
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 2-54, TD (28)
∆∆ Total rec 28-348, 5 TD; 12.4 YPR; 58 YPG
Extra point: The ball gets spread around in the Crusaders offense. Defenses will take away the deep ball (to Drew Kobayashi) often, but after that, Cui gets plenty of attention. Still, he’s found the end zone five times.

7. (tie) Clifford Cunningham, Nanakuli >> Pupule rating: 90
5-8, 150, Jr.
∆∆ vs Kalaheo Aug 16 rec 5-54, TD
∆∆ vs Roosevelt Aug 29 rec 3-77, TD
∆∆ @ Waialua Sept 6 rec 2-94, TD (18)
∆∆ vs Kaimuki Sept 13 rec 3-65, TD (50)
∆∆ vs Anuenue Sept 19 rec 2-73, TD (40)
∆∆ Total rec 15-363, 5 TD; 24.2 YPR; 72.6 YPG
Extra point: He’s one of just a few receivers who has caught a TD pass in every game so far. The Golden Hawks opened the season with a lot of air time for their receivers, but have gone to ground and pound in recent weeks. Cunningham keeps coming through with big plays.

7. (tie) Sean Kinel, Pac-Five >> Pupule rating: 90
5-9, 160, Sr.
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike Aug 16 rec 4-133, TD (85)
∆∆ vs St. Francis (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 5-85, 2 TD (6,24)
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 6-116, TD (21)
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 4-77, TD (27)
∆∆ Total rec 19-411, 5 TD; 21.6 YPR; 102.8 YPG
Extra point: He’s a direct beneficiary of the added coverage on teammate Tsubasa Brennan, but Kinel isn’t complaining one bit. Facing Kinel, Brennan and Infante, DCs will have to pick their poison.

7. (tie) Micah Ma‘a, Punahou, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 90
∆∆ #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 5-66, TD (11)
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 2-100, 2 TD (39,61)
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 DNP?
∆∆ Total rec 7-166, 3 TD; 23.7 YPR; 83 YPG
Extra point: Talent-wise, there’s never been a question about Ma‘a’s leaping ability. His life after high school will be about college and international volleyball, being one of the best setters in the country. I expect to see him continue to lay it out in his final season of football.

11. (tie) Drew Kobayashi, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 89
6-2, 185, Jr.
∆∆ vs Mililani Aug 16 rec 4-57
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rec 2-22
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 3-134, 2 TD (64, 20)
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 rec 3-76, TD (67)
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 3-37, TD (21)
∆∆ Total rec 15-336, 4 TD; 22.4 YPR; 56 YPG
Extra point: In a lesser offensive system, Kobayashi could switch to slotback sometimes, find some easy balls to catch and have the freedom to get plenty of yards after catch. But in this system, there are so many weapons, his role is purely as a deep threat with occasional out routes, and his numbers reflect this. He’s already received an offer from Cal, which shows that talent plus road show — attending camps and combines on the mainland — are crucial in the recruiting process. More so, actually, than straight statistics.

11. (tie) Lauriano Lucas, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 89
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 DNP?
∆∆ vs McKinley Aug 22 rec 4-51, 2 TD (10,30)
∆∆ @ #9 Waianae Aug 29 rec 2-126, TD (86)
∆∆ vs Castle Sept 5 rec 5-42, TD (5)
∆∆ @ Waipahu Sept 12 rec 3-148, 2 TD (59,82)
∆∆ Total rec 14-367, 6 TD; 26.2 YPR; 91.8 YPG
Extra point: One of just a handful of receivers who have caught a TD in every game so far. He came up big against Waianae and will get another test this weekend at Kahuku.

11. (tie) Keoni-Kordell Makekau, ‘Iolani >> Pupule rating: 89
5-9, 162, Jr.
∆∆ vs Mino Jiyu (Japan) Aug 16 rec 1-18
∆∆ vs Damien Aug 29 rec 9-154, TD (61)
∆∆ #8 Saint Louis Sept 13 rec 4-42, TD (15)
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 4-43, TD (10)
∆∆ Total rec 18-257, 3 TD; 14.3 YPR; 64.3 YPG
Extra point: His value as a kicker, arguably the best in the ILH, means that there’s no urgency to force-feed Makekau the football on deep routes. He’s a reliable possession receiver in the meantime. I thought this would be a breakout year for him, but apparently opposing coaches aren’t so willing to let him go 1-on-1 down the sideline.

14. (tie) Keanu Souza, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ vs Mililani Aug 16 rec 7-107, 2 TD (6,12)
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rec 1-3
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 2-54, TD (46)
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 rec 1-19
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 4-49
∆∆ Total rec 15-232, 3 TD; 15.5 YPR; 38.7 YPG
Extra point: Tremendous season-opening performance against Mililani, but he’s one of several quality pass catchers at Saint Louis. The wealth gets spread there.

14. (tie) Joshua Hiwatashi, KS-Maui >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ vs Maui (WMS) Aug 21 rec 13-198
∆∆ vs Lahainaluna (WMS) Aug 30 rec 4-74, TD (43)
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike Sept 5 rec 9-67
∆∆ vs Baldwin Sept 19 rec 9-97
∆∆ Total rec 35-436, TD; 12.4 YPR; 109 YPG
Extra point: Upcountry Maui is where one of the most productive receivers in the state is quietly doing his work. The Warriors are intent on opening up the offense — QB Chase Newton aired out 52 passes last week — and keeping it wide open.

14. (tie) Destin Moss, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 88
5-10, 175, Sr.
∆∆ vs Aiea Aug 15 rec 5-95, 2 TD (20,18)
∆∆ vs Waianae Aug 22 rec 3-12
∆∆ vs Waipahu Sept 5 rec 2-87, TD (76)
∆∆ vs McKinley Sept 12 rec 2-49, TD (34)
∆∆ vs #3 Kahuku Sept 19 rec 3-173, TD (99)
∆∆ Total rec 15-416, 5 TD; 27.3 YPR; 83.2 YPG
Extra point: Moss still doesn’t get a lot of opportunities, but when he gets his chances, he makes the most of them. The Cougars have an outstanding ground game, so it’s unlikely Moss’ numbers will change significantly, not that there’s anything wrong with 83 yards per game and 27 yards per catch.

14. (tie) Kumokuliihanana Noa, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif) Aug 29 rec 4-26, TD (7)
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 5 DNP?
∆∆ vs Damien Sept 11 rec 3-98
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 3-39, 2 TD (21,4)
∆∆ Total rec 10-163, 3 TD; 16.3 YPR; 54.3 YPG
Extra point: The younger brother of Kanawai Noa is coming into his own.

14. (tie) Bronson Ramos, Mililani, 5-10, 160, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 4-59, TD (26)
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 rec 1-23
∆∆ @ #10 Kapolei Aug 30 rec 5-90, TD (13)
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 12 rec 0-0 PR 57-yd TD
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 rec 4-29, TD (14)
∆∆ Total rec 14-201, 3 TD; 14.4 YPR; 40.3 YPG
PR – TD
Extra point: Ramos started the season as a WR3 (behind Kainoa Wilson and Kalakaua Timoteo), but could be the primary target now that the other two are injured. Especially tough on deep routes and corner routes.

14. (tie) Toma Savea, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 88
6-1, 200, Sr.
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 rec 5-175, TD (66)
∆∆ vs McKinley Aug 22 rec 5-50, 2 TD (11,15)
∆∆ @ #9 Waianae Aug 29 rec 2-27
∆∆ vs Castle Sept 5 DNP?
∆∆ @ Waipahu Sept 12 rec 3-32
∆∆ Total rec 15-284, 3 TD; 18.9 YPR; 71 YPG
Extra point: The Mules went to him big early, but his production has waned as of late. Then again, his size and playmaking ability draws plenty of attention and has opened up the other side of the field for WR Lauriano Lucas.

14. (tie) Isain Wong, Nanakuli >> Pupule rating: 88
5-6, 130, Jr.
∆∆ vs Kalaheo Aug 16 rec 5-169, TD
∆∆ vs Roosevelt Aug 29 rec 4-105, TD
∆∆ @ Waialua Sept 6 DNP?
∆∆ vs Kaimuki Sept 13 rec 2-20
∆∆ vs Anuenue Sept 19 DNP?
∆∆ Total 11-194, 2 TD; 17.6 YPR; 58.8 YPG
Extra point: Wong had as strong a start as any receiver in his first two games. If and when he’s on the field, the Golden Hawks have a tremendous collection of offensive talent.

Karson Cruz, Moanalua 6-1, 180, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 87
∆∆ @ #8 Waianae Aug 15 rec 2-43
∆∆ @ #7 Campbell Aug 22 rec 2-16
∆∆ vs #5 Farrington Aug 29 rec 10-310, 2 TD (52,40)
∆∆ vs Kapolei Sept 5 rec 1-4
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 19 rec 2-13, 2-pt catch
∆∆ Total rec 17-387, 2 TD; 22.8 YPR; 77.4 YPG
2-pt reception

Jarrod Infante, Pac-Five >> Pupule rating: 87
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike Aug 16 rec 8-77, TD (4)
∆∆ vs St. Francis (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 5-41
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 7-41

5-7, 165, Sr.

∆∆ @ #6 Farrington (Ticky) Aug 23 rec 4-64, 2 TD (27,15)
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Aug 30 rec 3-47, TD (19)

∆∆ #6 Campbell Sept 12 rec 7-67 rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Kailua Sept 19 rec 3-47 rush 1-12
∆∆ Total rec 23-288, 3 TD; 12.5 YPR; 48 YPG

∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 rec 3-87 yards, TD (74)

The cream of the crop is familiar, but as offenses open up, we’re seeing the progress of guys like Dustin Moss (Kaiser) and Lauriano Lucas (Leilehua).

Paul, nice list of receivers. I thought Makekau would be higher, but is that because he’s only played one D1 team? I think kids like him deserve a shot to showcase their best against D1 competition, which brings me to my next point. Do you know if the ILH reneged on their plan to force Iolani to play D1 next year?

This is the article you wrote a year ago talking about the ILH’s plan to move them up:

Howzit Kevin. I think Makekau is a Top 5 talent as a WR and PK. But defenses know about him and the Raiders aren’t going to force-feed him the ball, so his stats are modest.
