WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS
1. Kanawai Noa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 99
6-1, 185, Sr.
∆∆ #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 7-242, 3 TD (45,43,80)
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 2-36 PR 66-yd TD
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 rec 3-83, TD (37)
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani Sept 27 rec 6-169, TD (63)
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Oct 3 rec 7-175, 2 TD (8,26)
∆∆ Total rec 25-705, 7 TD; 28.2 YPR; 141 YPG
PR – TD
Extra point: There are a growing number of pass catchers with at least 25 receptions. But very few of them did it within just five games, and even those who have played seven or eight games are mostly far away from Noa’s yardage total. The fact that he’s so effective in so little playing time — just a bit more than one quarter of work last weekend — is telling. Noa is well past the 3,000-yard mark for his career, and though his numbers are curtailed significantly by the shortage of games, he is clearly in the discussion: who is the best WR in Hawaii high school football history?

2. Tsubasa Brennan, Pac-Five >> Pupule rating: 96
6-1, 170, Sr.
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike Aug 16 rec 19-292, 4 TD (15,52,29,55)
∆∆ vs St. Francis (Aloha) Aug 19 rec 11-144, 2 TD (17,31)
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 14-119, TD (19)
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 8-73
∆∆ vs #5 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 27 rec 2-89, TD (84)
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Oct 3 rec 9-85 rush 3-20 pass 0-4-0-0
∆∆ Total rec 54-717, 8 TD; 13.3 YPR; 143.4 YPG
Extra point: The Warriors kept a lid on Brennan most of the night, but that opened up opportunities for Grey Ihu, who caught two TD passes.

3. Jayce Bantolina, Campbell >> Pupule rating: 95
6-2, 205, Sr.
∆∆ vs Castle Aug 15 rec 5-69, TD (34)
∆∆ vs Moanalua Aug 22 rec 6-74, TD (16)
∆∆ vs Kailua Sept 5 rec 2-41, TD (15)
∆∆ @ Kapolei Sept 12 rec 9-170, 2 TD (13,75)
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Sept 19 rec 5-111, TD (47)
∆∆ @ Aiea Sept 27 rec 2-27
∆∆ vs #7 Farrington (Aloha) Oct 4 rec 9-107, 2 TD (35,11)
∆∆ Total rec 38-589, 8 TD; 15.5 YPR; 84.1 YPG
Extra point: Among the most consistent receivers in the state, even though the Sabers went to a backup QB against the Governors.

4. Kalakaua Timoteo, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 94
6-1, 195, Jr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 9-167, TD (17)
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 rec 4-134, TD (78)
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 30 rec 6-79
∆∆ @ Aiea Sept 12 rec 4-165, TD (53)
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 rec 5-57, TD (11)
∆∆ vs #3 Farrington Sept 27 rec 3-60, TD (42)
∆∆ vs Moanalua Oct 5 rec 1-7
∆∆ Total rec 32-669, 5 TD; 20.9 YPR; 95.6 YPG
Extra point: He continues to play through that right shoulder injury, but the beauty of playing for a team like Mililani is that there is depth, particularly at wide receiver. I wondered last week how long the Trojans could go without Kainoa Wilson, who’s been out since Week 2 with a collarbone injury), and having Timoteo at less than 100 percent healthy. If and when Wilson and Timoteo are on the field again, both back to normal, Mililani would score even more than 50.7 points per game.

5. Jason Sharsh, Moanalua >> Pupule rating: 93
5-9, 152, Sr.
∆∆ @ #8 Waianae Aug 15 rec 5-89, 2 TD (14,28)
∆∆ @ #7 Campbell Aug 22 DNP (back)
∆∆ vs #5 Farrington Aug 29 DNP (back)
∆∆ vs Kapolei Sept 5 rec 5-94
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 19 rec 11-232, 2 TD (31,26), 2-pt catch rush 1-4
∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 27 rec 7-121, TD (13) rush 0-0
∆∆ @ #2 Mililani Oct 4 rec 8-96, 3 TD (5,20,15) rush 2-(-7)
∆∆ Total rec 36-632, 8 TD; 17.6 YPR; 126.4 YPG
2-pt reception
rush 3-(-3)
Extra point: The blueprint from defenses facing Moanalua probably looks something like this: don’t let Sharsh get open early. If and when that happens, the offense gets momentum and everyone’s confidence rises. Mililani didn’t let the sure-handed senior get many looks in the first half, but eventually, he still produced three TDs.

6. Kainoa Wilson, Mililani >> Pupule rating 91 (INJ)
5-11, 155, Sr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 8-161, 2 TD (6,15) pass 1-1-0-33
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 30 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 12 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ vs #3 Farrington Sept 27 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ vs Moanalua Oct 5 DNP (INJ – collarbone)
∆∆ Total rec 8-161, 2 TD; 20.1 YPR; 161 YPG
Extra point: Looking at some video from Week 1 — Mililani against Saint Louis — it’s easy to forget how fluid and precise Wilson was as a route runner, completely in tune with QB McKenzie Milton. Good receivers consistently contribute 4-6 catches to the offense, covering anywhere from 40 to 70 yards and two or three first downs. That’s a solid producer. Wilson’s ability to stretch the field and work everything from the sidelines to the tough yards between the hashes — it’s not the the Trojans have missed him badly. But there are just a handful of so receivers who can do as many different things as Wilson does.

7. (tie) Allan Cui, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 90
5-8, 160, Sr.
∆∆ vs #3 Mililani Aug 16 rec 10-112, 2 TD (7,17)
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rec 4-29
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 3-30
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 5-54, TD (10)
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 rec 4-69, TD (21)
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 2-54, TD (28)
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 27 DNP?
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Oct 3 rec 2-59, TD (50)
∆∆ Total rec 30-407, 6 TD; 13.6 YPR; 58.1 YPG
Extra point: WIth one TD per five receptions, Cui has been an effective go-to receiver even thought the Saint Louis offense by design is not reliant on a single pass catcher.

7. (tie) Tyreek Keough, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 90
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 rec 3-87 yards, TD (74)
∆∆ vs McKinley Aug 22 rec 4-26
∆∆ @ #9 Waianae Aug 29 rec 2-34, 2-pt reception
∆∆ vs Castle Sept 5 rec 4-50

∆∆ @ #7 Kahuku Sept 27 rec 2-14, TD (16)
∆∆ vs #10 Kaiser Oct 3 rec 4-78, 3 TD (18,11,4)
∆∆ Total rec 23-392, 8 TD; 17 YPR; 56 YPG

7. (tie) Destin Moss, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 90
5-10, 175, Sr.
∆∆ vs Aiea Aug 15 rec 5-95, 2 TD (20,18)
∆∆ vs Waianae Aug 22 rec 3-12
∆∆ vs Waipahu Sept 5 rec 2-87, TD (76)
∆∆ vs McKinley Sept 12 rec 2-49, TD (34)
∆∆ vs #3 Kahuku Sept 19 rec 3-173, TD (99)
∆∆ @ Castle Sept 26 rec 10-80, TD (17)
∆∆ @ #8 Leilehua Oct 5 rec 4-33, TD (25)
∆∆ Total rec 29-529, 7 TD; 18.2 YPR; 75.6 YPG
Extra point: When Kahi Neves transferred out of state, it would’ve been hard to see the silver lining for Kaiser’s passing game. Kalawai‘a Judd arrived, learned to play QB in almost no time and Moss is having a superb senior season.

7. (tie) Nick Palleschi, Hawaii Prep: Pupule rating: 90
TE/DL, 6-5, 205, Sr.
∆∆ @ Waiakea (Wong) Aug 23 rec 6-82, TD (12) tak 9.5 (.5 tfl)
∆∆ @ Hilo (Wong) Aug 30 rec 10-134, 2 TD (15,25) tak 6 (2 tfl)
∆∆ vs Kealakehe Sept 6 rec 10-112 tak 7 (2 tfl)
∆∆ @ Keaau Sept 13 rec 6-100, TD (54) tak 5 (4 tfl, sak)
∆∆ @ Konawaena Sept 19 rec 11-79, TD (2) tak 10.5 (1.5 tfl)
∆∆ vs KS-Hawaii Sept 27 rec 2-6 tak 7.5 (0.5 tfl)
∆∆ vs Waiakea Oct 4 rec 4-51, TD (20) tak 7.5 (3 tfl, sak)
∆∆ Total rec 49-564, 6 TD; 11.5 YPR; 80.6 YPG
tak 53 (13.5 tfl, 2 sak)
Extra point: He’s done yeoman’s work as the key to HPA’s offense. When KS-Hawaii locked him down, teammate Justin Perry got open for two TDs. The two-way starter also has 53 tackles in seven games.

11. (tie) Clifford Cunningham, Nanakuli >> Pupule rating: 89
5-8, 150, Jr.
∆∆ vs Kalaheo Aug 16 rec 5-54, TD
∆∆ vs Roosevelt Aug 29 rec 3-77, TD
∆∆ @ Waialua Sept 6 rec 2-94, TD (18)
∆∆ vs Kaimuki Sept 13 rec 3-65, TD (50)
∆∆ vs Anuenue Sept 19 rec 2-73, TD (40)
∆∆ vs Pearl City Sept 26 rec 2-24
∆∆ vs Radford (Ticky) Oct 3 rec 5-100 PAT 3-3 FGA 2-2 (36,21)
∆∆ Total rec 22-487, 5 TD; 22.1 YPR; 69.6 YPG
Extra point: Two field goals and three PATs in a 27-26 win. Oh, and five catches for 100 yards. I don’t remember the last time a Nanakuli player made two FGs in a game.

11. (tie) Joshua Hiwatashi, KS-Maui >> Pupule rating: 89
∆∆ vs Maui (WMS) Aug 21 rec 13-198
∆∆ vs Lahainaluna (WMS) Aug 30 rec 4-74, TD (43)

∆∆ vs Maui Oct 4 rec 8-42, TD (3)
∆∆ Total rec 50-509, 2 TD; 10.2 YPR; 84.8 YPG
Extra point: Fifty receptions is quite a feat for any receiver.

11. (tie) Naliko Kea, Kapolei, 5-7, 154, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 89
5-7, 165, Sr.
∆∆ @ #5 Kahuku Aug 15 rec 5-53
∆∆ @ #6 Farrington (Ticky) Aug 23 rec 4-64, 2 TD (27,15)

11. (tie) Kapi‘in a King, Damien >> Pupule rating: 89
WR/TE, 6-5, 208, Sr.
∆∆ @ Kauai (Vidinha) Aug 23 rec 4-60
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Aug 29 rec 3-65, TD (35)
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 3-77, TD (13)
∆∆ @ #3 Kamehameha Sept 11 rec 3-32
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 5-51, TD (11)
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis (Aloha) Oct 3 rec 5-106, 2 TD (4,11), 2-pt reception)
∆∆ Total rec 21-391, 5 TD; 18.6 YPR; 65.2 YPG

11. (tie) Drew Kobayashi, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 89
6-2, 185, Jr.
∆∆ vs Mililani Aug 16 rec 4-57
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rec 2-22
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 3-134, 2 TD (64, 20)
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 rec 3-76, TD (67)
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 3-37, TD (21)
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 27 rec 3-59, 2 TD (26,21)
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Oct 3 rec 1-33, TD (33)
∆∆ Total rec 19-427, 7 TD; 22.5 YPR; 53.4 YPG
Extra point: He’s got the classic features of a deep-ball playmaker. Averaging one TD in for (less than) every three receptions, and 22.5 yards per catch, his numbers look more like a 1970s big-play receiver in a wishbone offense.

11. (tie) Lauriano Lucas, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 89
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 DNP?
∆∆ vs McKinley Aug 22 rec 4-51, 2 TD (10,30)
∆∆ @ #9 Waianae Aug 29 rec 2-126, TD (86)
∆∆ vs Castle Sept 5 rec 5-42, TD (5)
∆∆ @ Waipahu Sept 12 rec 3-148, 2 TD (59,82)
∆∆ @ #7 Kahuku Sept 27 rec 1-5
∆∆ vs #10 Kaiser Oct 3 rec 6-93, TD (36)
∆∆ Total rec 21-465, 7 TD; 22.1 YPR; 77.5 YPG
Extra point: One element of a great defense is its ability to shut down an offense’s big-play receiver. Kahuku did the job on Lucas.

11. (tie) Keoni-Kordell Makekau, ‘Iolani >> Pupule rating: 89
5-9, 162, Jr.
∆∆ vs Mino Jiyu (Japan) Aug 16 rec 1-18
∆∆ vs Damien Aug 29 rec 9-154, TD (61)
∆∆ #8 Saint Louis Sept 13 rec 4-42, TD (15)
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 4-43, TD (10)
∆∆ @ #1 Punahou Sept 27 rec 3-74
∆∆ @ #4 Kamehameha Oct 5 rec 8-162, TD (77)
∆∆ Total rec 29-493, 4 TD; 17 YPR; 70.4 YPG
Extra point: It was a sensational battle between Makekau and Kamehameha safety Dylan Kane, who picked off a deep pass intended for Makekau. But the junior had his best game of the season, by far, against the elite defensive unit of the Warriors.

11. (tie) Kumokuliihanana Noa, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 89
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif) Aug 29 rec 4-26, TD (7)
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 5 DNP?
∆∆ vs Damien Sept 11 rec 3-98
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 3-39, 2 TD (21,4)
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 27 rec 3-30, TD (19)
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani Oct 3 rec 5-52, TD (25)
∆∆ Total rec 18-247, 5 TD; 13.7 YPR; 49.4 YPG
Extra point: The emergence of Fatu Sua-Godinet as a QB has opened up a lot of one-on-one matchups for Kamehameha’s receivers. Noa is one of the key beneficiaries.

20. (tie) Micah Ma‘a, Punahou, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 5-66, TD (11)
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 2-100, 2 TD (39,61)
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 DNP?
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani Sept 27 rec 3-69
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Oct 3 DNP?
∆∆ Total rec 10-235, 3 TD; 23.5 YPR; 78.3 YPG
Extra point:

20. (tie) Bronson Ramos, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 88
5-10, 160, Sr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 4-59, TD (26)
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 rec 1-23
∆∆ @ #10 Kapolei Aug 30 rec 5-90, TD (13)
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 12 rec 0-0 PR 57-yd TD
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 rec 4-29, TD (14)
∆∆ vs #3 Farrington Sept 27 rec 4-43
∆∆ vs Moanalua Oct 5 rec 3-84, TD (65)
∆∆ Total rec 21-328, 4 TD; 15.6 YPR; 46.9 YPG
PR – TD
Extra point: He’s as steady a receiver as they’ve got at Mililani, another dual-threat guy who can beat defenses deep or run intermediate routes. Who’s having more fun, a guy like Ramos, utilized as a component in a potent offense for an unbeaten team, or a guy like Brennan, the go-to receiver for a team that sometimes throws the ball more than 50 times a game? That’s an unfair question, of course. If you are where your heart is, nothing else matters.

20. (tie) Toma Savea, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 88
6-1, 200, Sr.
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 rec 5-175, TD (66)
∆∆ vs McKinley Aug 22 rec 5-50, 2 TD (11,15)

∆∆ Total rec 19-322, 3 TD; 16.9 YPR; 53.7 YPG

Extra point: The Mules put Savea to work as a ballcarrier with Randy Neverson injured (knee).

∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Oct 3 rec 1-12
∆∆ Total rec 22-434. 6 TD; 19.7 YPR; 72.3 YPG
Extra point: With QB Kainoa Ferreira out of the lineup, Kinel had his least productive game of the season.

Blaise Manabe, Kalani >> Pupule rating: 87
∆∆ vs Waialua Aug 16 rec 3-157, 3 TD (55, 70, 32) rush 3-3

∆∆ Total rec 17-236, 3 TD

Karson Cruz, Moanalua 6-1, 180, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 86
∆∆ @ #8 Waianae Aug 15 rec 2-43
∆∆ @ #7 Campbell Aug 22 rec 2-16
∆∆ vs #5 Farrington Aug 29 rec 10-310, 2 TD (52,40)
∆∆ vs Kapolei Sept 5 rec 1-4
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 19 rec 2-13, 2-pt catch
∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 27 rec 5-43, 2 TD (17,6)
∆∆ @ #2 Mililani Oct 4 rec 2-27
∆∆ Total rec 21-457, 4 TD; 21.8 YPR; 65.3 YPG
2-pt reception
Extra point: The first-year player hasn’t come close to the 100-yard mark since that 310-yard explosion against Farrington in Week 3. He’s still a factor, still a threat, but after watching him go up for jump-ball type deep throws several times without success against Mililani, it’s clear that elite defensive backs aren’t going to double up on him until he can prove he can go get that kind of pass.

Chad Figueroa, Castle >> Pupule rating: 86

SUMMARY
It’s time to start thinking of Kanawai Noa as more than just the top receiver for the top team in the state, or as the top receiver from last year’s state-championship team. Even the numbers don’t do him justice. If you see him play often enough, it’s his mastery of route-running both deep down the field and on intermediate routes that is part of the appeal. It’s his work on special teams. It’s the fact that he would have insanely large statistics if there were A) more games, and B) more D-I competition in the ILH. He’s done it with an early-season injury to his left arm (unrelated to last year’s injury). It’s a far-reaching conversation over a span of decades, but Noa may be the best WR in Hawaii prep football history. There’s little question he’s part of that small circle of top five or so pass catchers. His game, his skills … timeless.
