WIDE RECEIVERS/TIGHT ENDS
1. Kanawai Noa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 99
6-1, 185, Sr.

∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis (Aloha) (playoff) Oct 25 rec 12-176, TD (52)
∆∆ Total rec 44-963, 9 TD; 21.9 YPR; 137.6 YPG
PR – 2 TD
XP: It was wrenching to see a long TD by Noa get called back last week on an illegal block that was completely unnecessary, but it matters not. Whether the Buffanblu need a first down or a touchdown, he finds a way.

10/22
There are a growing number of pass catchers with at least 25 receptions. But very few of them did it within just five games, and even those who have played seven or eight games are mostly far away from Noa’s yardage total. The fact that he’s so effective in so little playing time — just a bit more than one quarter of work last weekend — is telling. Noa is well past the 3,000-yard mark for his career, and though his numbers are curtailed significantly by the shortage of games, he is clearly in the discussion: who is the best WR in Hawaii high school football history?

2. Tsubasa Brennan, Pac-Five >> Pupule rating: 96
6-1, 170, Sr.
∆∆ @ King Kekaulike Aug 16 rec 19-292, 4 TD (15,52,29,55)
∆∆ vs St. Francis (Aloha) Aug 19 rec 11-144, 2 TD (17,31)
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 5 rec 14-119, TD (19)
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani (Aloha) Sept 20 rec 8-73

∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Oct 10 rec 13-150, 2 TD (13,6) rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha), playoff Oct 17 rec 12-208, TD (39)
∆∆ Total rec 88-1,160, 11 TD
Extra point: The Warriors kept a lid on Brennan most of the night, but that opened up opportunities for Grey Ihu, who caught two TD passes.

3. (tie) Jayce Bantolina, Campbell >> Pupule rating: 95
6-2, 205, Sr.
∆∆ vs Castle Aug 15 rec 5-69, TD (34)

∆∆ Total rec 47-736, 10 TD; 15.7 YPR; 73.6 YPG
2-pt reception
XP: The Trojans took away Bantolina’s deep routes without having to lose too much run support.

10/22
He’s Mr. Reliable for the Sabers’ offense. For any team, high productivity and work ethic at this position are excellent, but having maturity isn’t always a given. Bantolina is rock solid.

3. (tie) Jason Sharsh, Moanalua >> Pupule rating: 95
5-9, 152, Sr.
∆∆ @ #8 Waianae Aug 15 rec 5-89, 2 TD (14,28)
∆∆ @ #7 Campbell Aug 22 DNP (back)
∆∆ vs #5 Farrington Aug 29 DNP (back)
∆∆ vs Kapolei Sept 5 rec 5-94
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 19 rec 11-232, 2 TD (31,26), 2-pt catch rush 1-4
∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 27 rec 7-121, TD (13) rush 0-0

∆∆ @ #10 Kaiser (playoff) Oct 10 rec 12-300, TD (16), 2-pt catch rush 0-0
∆∆ Total rec 48-932, 9 TD; 19.4 YPR; 155.3 YPG
2-pt reception
rush 3-(-3)
XP: What if he hadn’t injured his back and missed two games? What if that preseason opener against Waiakea hadn’t been cancelled (weather)? What if Moanalua had somehow beaten Kaiser and played another playoff game? It’s all history now, but in six games, Sharsh put up amazing numbers. Sure, run-and-shoot critics can always point and say the numbers are a result of the system. Guess what? Guys still have be in supreme shape to run these routes snap after snap after snap. If a defense isn’t conditioned well enough to stop receivers, that’s on the defense. Sharsh has a big motor and keeps going. He beats defenses not with sheer speed or size, but with guile, stamina, skills and relentless drive.

He is not an NCAA qualifier as of yet, but wherever he lands, he will add value immediately. If he and QB Kawika Keama-Jacobe land at the same campus, even better.

5 (tie). Kalakaua Timoteo, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 94
6-1, 195, Jr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 9-167, TD (17)
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 rec 4-134, TD (78)

∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) (playoff) Oct 25 rec 7-138, TD (35)
∆∆ Total rec 31-654, 9 TD; 21.1 YPR; 65.4 YPG
XP: I like the way the ball came his way when cornerbacks backed off later in the season. He can make all the catches, and his progress over the course of 10 games was significant. In this system, it’s all about coverage and reads, and defenses can choose to shadow him or leave him to single coverage. He has room to grow and will make more catches downfield as he gets stronger, but I hope he continues to get a lot of short- and intermediate-route action in every game. He can make things happen.

7. (tie) Destin Moss, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 93
5-10, 175, Sr.
∆∆ vs Aiea Aug 15 rec 5-95, 2 TD (20,18)

∆∆ @ #2 Mililani (playoff) Oct 17 rec 4-46
∆∆ Total rec 40-680, 8 TD; 17 YPR; 75.6 YPG

∆∆ Total rec 33-426, 6 TD; 12.9 YPR; 53.3 YPG

∆∆ vs Baldwin (WMS) Oct 24 rec 9-104, TD (26)
∆∆ Total rec 71-679, 3 TD; 9.6 YPR; 84.9 YPG
XP: One of two Warriors with at least 100 receiving yards in the win over Baldwin.

10/22
Mr. Consistency for the Warriors.

9. (tie) Keoni Keanini, KS-Maui >> Pupule rating: 90

∆∆ Total rec 49-564, 6 TD; 11.5 YPR; 80.6 YPG
tak 53 (13.5 tfl, 2 sak)
Extra point: He’s done yeoman’s work as the key to HPA’s offense. When KS-Hawaii locked him down, teammate Justin Perry got open for two TDs. The two-way starter also has 53 tackles in seven games.

∆∆ vs Kalani (playoff) Oct 25 rec 3-18
∆∆ Total rec 31-553, 5 TD; 17.8 YPR; 61.4 YPG
XP: He’s not one of those placekickers who stands behind the bench, kicking into his net all night. The Golden Hawks use him like a regular player who happens to produce significantly for the offense.

13. (tie) Naliko Kea, Kapolei, 5-7, 154, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 89

XP: Made the most of his opportunities with a TD/reception rate of 28 percent. Faced two strong defensive secondaries in Kahuku and Campbell. They studied him well, apparently.

13. (tie) Keoni-Kordell Makekau, ‘Iolani >> Pupule rating: 89
5-9, 162, Jr.
∆∆ vs Mino Jiyu (Japan) Aug 16 rec 1-18
∆∆ vs Damien Aug 29 rec 9-154, TD (61)

∆∆ vs St Francis Oct 11 rec 1-7
∆∆ vs St Francis (playoff) Oct 17 rec 3-33
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) (playoff) Oct 25 rec 2-31
∆∆ Total rec 35-564, 4 TD; 16.1 YPR; 62.7 YPG
XP: Two field goals against Damien in the ILH playoffs. His value remains huge with field goals, PATs and touchbacks on kickoffs. He continues to be a factor vertically in ‘Iolani’s passing game.

10/22
His value to the Raiders goes beyond catching passes. He’s the kickoff man with touchback range, possibly the most productive FG kicker in the state. He’s a mainstay of the offense, even if he’s not getting a lot of looks, because defenses have to account for him. The threat of Makekau getting solo coverage deep is not worth it for most coordinators. They’d rather let the Raiders run and chew up clock.

13. (tie) Kumokuliihanana Noa, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 89
6-0, Jr.
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif) Aug 29 rec 4-26, TD (7)

∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Oct 10 rec 5-93
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis (Aloha) (playoff) Oct 17 rec 3-123, TD (80)
∆∆ Total rec 26-461, 6 TD; 17.7 YPR; 65.9 YPG
XP: Showed plenty of potential this season. With backup QB Justice Young returning (he’s only a sophomore), next year could be just as interesting. Young found Noa on the 80-yard TD pass against Saint Louis last Friday.

13. (tie) Bronson Ramos, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 89

∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rec 4-59, TD (26)

∆∆ vs #8 Campbell (playoff) Oct 17 rec 5-36
∆∆ Total rec 28-428, 8 TD; 15.3 YPR; 53.5 YPG
XP: TD/reception rate of 28.6 percent is very impressive. Did most of his big-play work in two games (Waipahu, Kaiser). More of a consistency guy.

20. (tie) Sean Kinel, Pac-Five >> Pupule rating: 88

∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) (playoff) Oct 17 rec 4-56
∆∆ Total rec 33-602, 7 TD
Extra point: With QB Kainoa Ferreira out of the lineup, Kinel had his least productive game of the season.

20. (tie) Micah Ma‘a, Punahou, Sr. >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rec 5-66, TD (11)

SUMMARY
As much as it is a banner year for elite, underclass QBs, it’s been a pretty good year for WRs, too. Some of the neighbor-island pass catchers are doing well, and though many of them won’t be seen on the state-tournament stage, they’ve earned some Pupule rating points, nonetheless. KS-Maui, in particular, continues to progress with a four-wide offense, utilizing the speed and hands of their receiving corps. The depth at Mililani, Saint Louis, Moanalua, Pearl City have been notable this fall. The programs that have younger receivers and younger QBs have every opportunity to develop at substantial rate in the coming offseason.
