RUNNING BACKS
1. (tie) Vavae Malepeai, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 97
6-0, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 rush 25-112, 2 TD (2,2) rec 1-15
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 rush 9-80, 3 TD (2,22,6), 2-pt run rec 0-0
∆∆ @ #10 Kapolei Aug 30 rush 15-156, 2 TD (47,1) rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Aiea Sept 12 rush 13-65, 2 TD (4,5) rec 3-30, TD (4)
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 rush 29-145, 2 TD (2,9), 2-pt run rec 1-6
∆∆ Total rush 91-568, 11 TD; 6.2 YPC; 113.6 YPG
2-pt run
rec 5-51, TD; 10.2 YPR; 10.2 YPG
Extra point: Coming off a banner sophomore season (1,375 yards, 20 TDs), Malepeai hasn’t carried the ball as often, which is good news. He enters the second half of the season relatively fresh.

1. (tie) Ranan Mamiya, Farrington >> Pupule rating: 97
5-11, 170, Sr.
∆∆ vs Waipahu (Aloha) Aug 16 rush 4-124, 3 TD (25,61,31)
∆∆ vs #9 Kapolei (Ticky) Aug 23 rush 11-128, 2 TD (7,21) rec 2-25 KR 89-yd TD
∆∆ @ Moanalua Aug 29 rush 14-97, 3 TD (18,25,16) rec 3-26
∆∆ vs Aiea (Ticky) Sept 6 rush 6-34, TD (1) rec 1-3 PR 60-yd TD pass 1-1-0-71, TD (71)
∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 12 rush 10-81, TD (8) rec 2-23 pass 0-1-0-0
∆∆ Total rush 45-464, 10 TD; 10.2 YPC; 92.8 YPG
rec 8-77
KR – TD
PR – TD
PASS – TD
Extra point: He may be the fastest running back/returner I’ve seen in a long, long time. At some point, opposing coaches will stop kicking to him entirely.

3. (tie) Jensen McDaniel, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 96
Jr.
∆∆ vs Aiea Aug 15 rush 24-162, 4 TD (70,2,1,1) rec 3-29
∆∆ vs Waianae Aug 22 rush 22-159, TD (76) rec 1-8
∆∆ vs Waipahu Sept 5 rush 14-162, 2 TD (52,43) rec 1-34
∆∆ vs McKinley Sept 12 rush 12-88, 5 TD (12,5,4,8,10) rec 7-62
∆∆ vs #3 Kahuku Sept 19 rush 28-98 rec 3-99, TD (87)
∆∆ Total rush 100-669, 12 TD; 6.7 YPC; 133.8 YPG
rec 15-232, TD; 15.5 YPR; 46.4 YPG
Extra point: His string of 100-yard rushing games ended, but he’s contributed as a pass catcher in a big way the past two games. In the win over Kahuku, McDaniel was just three yards away from posting a rare achievement: 100 yards rushing and 100 more receiving in the same game.

3. (tie) Wayne Taulapapa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 96
5-11, 185, Jr.
∆∆ vs #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rush 15-161 rec 3-21
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 rush 11-57, 2 TD (13,1) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 rush 6-153, 3 TD (9,63,6) rec 1-10
∆∆ Total rush 32-371, 5 TD; 11.6 YPC; 123.7 YPG
rec 4-31
Extra point: Same with his QB (Ephraim Tuliloa) and their lead WR (Kanawai Noa) — all these byes are leaving fans wanting for more. When they’ve been on the field, the Buffanblu have been explosive, balanced and entertaining. The one plus for Taulapapa is that he’s fresh and healthy as a result.

5. Kesi Ah-Hoy, Kahuku, 6-1, 192, So. >> Pupule rating: 95
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 15 rush 12-97, TD (38) rec 2-69 KR 94-yd TD
∆∆ vs Waipahu Aug 22 rush 3-23 rec 2-26
∆∆ vs McKinley (Ticky) Aug 29 rush 9-115, 3 TD (41,18,12) rec 1-20
∆∆ @ Castle Sept 12 rush 7-37, 2 TD (2,3) rec 2-46 1-2-0-40, TD
∆∆ @ Kaiser Sept 19 rush 16-74, 2 FL rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 47-346, 6 TD; 7.4 YPC; 69.3 YPG
rec 7-161
KR – TD
Pass – TD
Extra point: He’s only a 10th grader, so there will be the usual ups and downs. A two-fumble game at midseason should make Ah-Hoy into a better running back the rest of the way.

6. (tie) Terell Johnson, Campbell >> Pupule rating: 92
6-0, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs Castle Aug 15 rush 11-148 yards, TD (70)
∆∆ vs Moanalua Aug 22 rush 18-127, 2 TD (5,49) rec 1-6
∆∆ vs Kailua Sept 5 rush 9-5 rec 3-31, TD (10)
∆∆ @ Kapolei Sept 12 rush 15-39 rec 2-9
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Sept 19 rush 14-143, 2 TD (35,41) rec 1-11
∆∆ Total rush 67-562, 5 TD; 8.4 YPC; 112.4 YPG
rec 7-67, TD
Extra point: There may be no RB swifter than Johnson at the second level. Once he hits the hole and finds a crease, his acceleration is both explosive and effortless. Not a bruiser-type ballcarrier at this point, so he may be better suited to WR or SB in college.

6. (tie) K.J. Pascua, ‘Iolani >> Pupule rating: 92
5-5, 157, So.
∆∆ vs Mino Jiyu (Japan) Aug 16 rush 15-120, 2 TD (1,2) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien Aug 29 rush 23-132, TD (8) rec 1-39
∆∆ #8 Saint Louis Sept 13 rush 17-81 rec 0-0
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 20 rush 21-190, 5 TD (39,19,3,7,7) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 76-523, 8 TD; 6.9 YPC; 130.8 YPG
rec 1-39
Extra point: He is the biggest reason the Raiders have been a predominantly running team despite the loss of Jordan Ross. Pascua ranks third statewide in total carries even as he shares the workload with Storm Lotomau. It’ll be interesting to see how his body holds up.

8. (tie) Kaulana Apelu, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 91 (injured)
5-10, 185, Sr.
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif.) Aug 29 rush 10-79 rec 3-42 (INJ – knee)
Extra point: After losing his junior season to injury, he came into the fall prepared for a potential championship run. In less than a full game, he accumulated more than 100 yards against one of the CIF’s top teams on the road, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry. We’ll never know what #13 would’ve done with a healthy, full season. He was explosive, tough and promising as a sophomore two years ago. My guess is that Apelu would’ve had a 1,000-yard season. Coach Cosbie thinks Apelu will rebound and play at the next level. In time, there’s no doubt it can happen.

8. (tie) Ace Faumui, Kalani >> Pupule rating: 91
∆∆ vs Waialua Aug 16 rush 0-0
∆∆ @ Kalaheo (Kailua field) Aug 23 rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Anuenue (Kaiser Stadium) Aug 29 rush 8-108, 4 TD (50, 6, 2, 11), 2-pt run rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Roosevelt Sept 5 rush 14-151, TD rec 2-(-10)
∆∆ vs Radford (Kaiser Stadium) Sept 12 rush 6-8 rec 3-49
∆∆ vs Kaimuki (Kaiser Stadium) Sept 20 rush 25-180, TD (15) rec 4-8
∆∆ Total rush 47-439, 6 TD; 9.3 YPC; 109.8 YPG
rec 6-(-2)
Extra point: He’s learning on the job, so to speak, a linebacker giving his team what it needs — a straight-ahead, chain-moving producer. At the D-II level, he drags tacklers and his yards-after-contact, simply phenomenal. For now, Kalani’s fly sweeps are enough to keep defenses somewhat honest, but I wonder how fresh Faumui will be by the playoffs.

10. (tie) Jahred Silofau, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 90
5-8, 190, So.
∆∆ vs Mililani Aug 16 DNP
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rush 3-28 rec 0-0
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 DNP
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 rush 2-13, TD (4) rec 0-0
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 rush 13-101, TD (20) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha (Aloha) Sept 20 rush 20-152, TD (3) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 38-294, 3 TD; 7.7 YPC; 73.5 YPG
Extra point: The sophomore has stepped up into a go-to role for the Crusaders. He runs with decisiveness, hits the hole hard and has power, a lot of yardage after contact.

10. (tie) Tristin Spikes, Hilo >> Pupule rating: 90
5-8, 175, Sr.
∆∆ vs Waiakea (Wong) Aug 16 rush 12-112, no other stats available
∆∆ vs Hawaii Prep (Wong) Aug 30 rush 9-98, TD rec 3-63, TD
∆∆ vs KS-Hawaii (Wong) Sept 5 rush 25-114, TD rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Honokaa Sept 12
∆∆ @ Kealakehe Sept 20 rush 16-25 rec 2-15
Extra point: Have some missing statistics to gather, but after seeing him play last year (against Campbell), he’s a physical, explosive back. The lack of a consistent passing game puts a little more of the burden on Spikes, but he thrives on it.

12. (tie) Jordan Bayudan, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 89
∆∆ St. Francis Sept 5 rush 11-79, TD (32) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien Sept 11 rush 10-65, 3 TD (7,2,1) rec 2-10
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 20 rush 11-144, TD (82) rec 1-3
∆∆ Total rush 32-288, 5 TD; 9 YPC; 96 YPG
rec 3-13
Extra point: With Apelu’s injury, the Warriors have been using a committee of running backs. That may continue going forward, but now they know what Bayudan can do under the big lights.

12. (tie) Challen Faamatau, Farrington >> Pupule rating: 89
5-10, 183, So.
∆∆ vs Waipahu (Aloha) Aug 16 rush 5-28 rec 1-6
∆∆ vs #9 Kapolei (Ticky) Aug 23 rush 15-68 rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Moanalua Aug 29 rush 16-115, TD rec 2-24, TD
∆∆ vs Aiea (Ticky) Sept 6 rush 7-86, 2 TD (1,4) rec 2-36
∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 12 rush 5-30 rec 2-25, TD (5)
∆∆ Total rush 48-327, 3 TD; 6.8 YPC; 65.4 YPG
rec 7-91, TD
Extra point: His numbers would likely be significantly different if Mamiya hadn’t arrived this year, but it’s a blessing in disguise. As a sophomore, he’s averaging 9.6 carries per game, which means his legs will be fresh when the postseason arrives. His body won’t be worn out going into his junior year.

12. (tie) Daniel Kelley, Maui >> Pupule rating: 89
5-7, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs Kealakehe (WMS) Aug 15 rush 28-216, TD
∆∆ vs KS-Maui (WMS) Aug 21 rush 14-150, 2 TD
∆∆ vs Baldwin (WMS) Aug 29 rush 10-50, TD
∆∆ vs #9 Lahainaluna (WMS) Sept 13 rush 10-38
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike (WMS) Sept 20 rush 6-64, TD (33) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 68-518, 5 TD; 7.6 YPC; 103.6 YPG
Extra point: After a huge season-opening performance against Kealakehe, his workload has diminished due to the talented corps of runners at Maui. That’s what works best for the team, but it’s nice for the Sabers to know that Kelley can handle a big workload if necessary.

12. (tie) Sean Noda, Kaimuki >> Pupule rating: 89
5-5, 140, Sr.
∆∆ vs Anuenue (Kaiser Stadium) Aug 23 rush 14-152, 3 TD (6,9,56) rec 2-16
∆∆ @ Pearl City Aug 29 rush 8-1 rec 1-7 KR 81-yd TD
∆∆ vs Radford (Kaiser Stadium) Sept 6 rush 18-130, TD (56) rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Nanakuli Sept 13 DNP?
∆∆ vs Kalani (Kaiser Stadium) Sept 20 rush 17-95 rec 1-23
∆∆ Total rush 57-378, 4 TD; 6.6 YPC; 94.5 YPG
Extra point: True Ironman. He’s on the field for offense, defense and kick returns. Pound for pound, there may not be another team that gets as much effort from a single player.

16. (tie) Kawika Akahi, King Kekaulike >> Pupule rating: 88

SUMMARY
Depth is real at this position. The teams who have quality depth survive. Case in point: Campbell has a burner in Terell Johnson, but backup Austin May is good enough to start for many teams. Kamehameha has overcome the loss of Kaulana Apelu to a good extent. Then there are a number of title contenders who have a great starting RB, but no viable backup who can step in and produce right away.
