3. (tie) Jensen McDaniel, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 96
Jr.
∆∆ vs Aiea Aug 15 rush 24-162, 4 TD (70,2,1,1) rec 3-29

∆∆ Total rush 144-861, 15 TD; 6 YPC; 123 YPG
rec 20-296, TD; 14.8 YPR; 42.3 YPG
Extra point: 1,159 yards from scrimmage in seven games. Oh, and 16 total TDs. Who is this guy???

3. (tie) Wayne Taulapapa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 96
5-11, 185, Jr.
∆∆ vs #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 rush 15-161 rec 3-21
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 rush 11-57, 2 TD (13,1) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 rush 6-153, 3 TD (9,63,6) rec 1-10
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani Sept 27 rush 8-77, 4 TD (9,43,3,2) rec 2-19
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Oct 3 rush 10-118, 4 TD (5.2.20.1) rec 1-13
∆∆ Total rush 50-568, 13 TD; 11.4 YPC; 113.6 YPG
rec 7-63
Extra point: His workload has been extremely light due to blowout wins, but in the long run, it’s better for the Buffanblu to have Taulapapa very fresh for the stretch run. At this point a year ago, Punahou had played seven games (including two preseason). This year, there was only one scheduled preseason game and Hurricane Iselle washed that away. So Taulapapa (and his teammates) have played in two fewer games at this same point in the schedule, and he had 112 carries. That’s more than DOUBLE what he’s been asked to do this fall as of Oct. 3. He may not reach last year’s totals — 161 carries, 1,006 yards and 14 TDs, plus nine receptions for 146 yards and three more TDs — but Punahou’s campaign to repeat as state champions is going according to plan.

5. Kesi Ah-Hoy, Kahuku >> Pupule rating: 93
6-1, 192, So.
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 15 rush 12-97, TD (38) rec 2-69 KR 94-yd TD

∆∆ Total rush 65-380, 6 TD; 5.8 YPC; 54.3 YPG

KR – TD
Pass – TD
Extra point: His numbers have fluctuated, but when he’s in open space, there’s hardly a more exciting runner with the ball.

6. (tie) Terell Johnson, Campbell >> Pupule rating: 92
6-0, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs Castle Aug 15 rush 11-148 yards, TD (70)

∆∆ Total rush 95-674, 6 TD; 7.1 YPC; 96.3 YPG

Extra point: Split the load with Austin May (15 carries) against Farrington.

6. (tie) K.J. Pascua, ‘Iolani >> Pupule rating: 92

∆∆ vs Mino Jiyu (Japan) Aug 16 rush 15-120, 2 TD (1,2) rec 0-0

∆∆ Total rush 102-712, 11 TD; 7 YPC; 101.7 YPG
2-pt run
rec 2-66
Extra point: Pascua keeps making an impact against D-I and D-II opponents alike.

8. (tie) Kaulana Apelu, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 91 (injured)
5-10, 185, Sr.
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif.) Aug 29 rush 10-79 rec 3-42 (INJ – knee)
Extra point: After losing his junior season to injury, he came into the fall prepared for a potential championship run. In less than a full game, Apelu accumulated more than 100 yards against one of the CIF’s top teams on the road, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry. We’ll never know what #13 would’ve done with a healthy, full season. He was explosive, tough and promising as a sophomore two years ago. My guess is that Apelu would’ve had a 1,000-yard season. Coach Cosbie thinks Apelu will rebound and play at the next level. In time, there’s no doubt it can happen.

8. (tie) Ace Faumui, Kalani >> Pupule rating: 91
∆∆ vs Waialua Aug 16 rush 0-0
∆∆ @ Kalaheo (Kailua field) Aug 23 rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Anuenue (Kaiser Stadium) Aug 29 rush 8-108, 4 TD (50, 6, 2, 11), 2-pt run rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Roosevelt Sept 5 rush 14-151, TD rec 2-(-10)

∆∆ vs Kaimuki (Kaiser Stadium) Sept 20 rush 25-180, TD (15) rec 4-8
∆∆ @ Pearl City Oct 3 rush 20-142, TD (1) rec 0-0
∆∆ Total rush 67-581, 7 TD; 8.7 YPC; 116.2 YPG
rec 6-47
Extra point: His success has been mostly through sheer determination rather than nifty moves. That run-first approach has the Falcons competing again for a playoff berth.

10. (tie) Makaila Haina-Horswill, Nanakuli >> Pupule rating: 90
5-6, 166, Sr.
∆∆ vs Kalaheo Aug 16 rush 16-160, 2 TD rec 0-0

∆∆ vs Pearl City Sept 26 rush 17-126, 3 TD (4,21,34) rec 1-14
∆∆ vs Radford (Ticky) Oct 3 rush 20-189, TD (70) rec 1-2
∆∆ Total rush 89-872, 10 TD; 7.6 YPC; 124.6 YPG
rec 4-31, TD
Extra point: He’s a fine first-half player, but Haina-Horswill is starting to make a habit of clutch TD runs ini the second half.

10. (tie) Keenan Luis, Baldwin >> Pupule rating: 90
∆∆ vs Edison (Calif) WMS) Aug 23 rush 3-5
∆∆ vs Maui (WMS) Aug 29 rush 12-87, TD

∆∆ Total rush 68-492, 6 TD; 7.2 YPC; 98.4 YPG
rec 14-183, 4 TD
KR – TD
Extra point: Another Sproles-esque performance for the explosively quick playmaker.

13. (tie) Jordan Bayudan, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 89
∆∆ St. Francis Sept 5 rush 11-79, TD (32) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien Sept 11 rush 10-65, 3 TD (7,2,1) rec 2-10
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 20 rush 11-144, TD (82) rec 1-3
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 27 rush 2-22, 2 TD (15,7) rec ?
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani Oct 3 rush 16-159, 3 TD (25,12,8) rec 1-13
∆∆ Total rush 50-469, 10 TD; 9.4 YPC; 93.8 YPG
rec 4-26
Extra point: There’s a wealth of RB talent at Kapalama Heights seemingly every year. Last year, Kainoa Simao stepped up after Kaulana Apelu’s first injury. This year, Bayudan has found a groove with his offensive line. It’s just too bad there are, at the most, three ILH games left, and then two at the state tourney. That’s if the Warriors get there. If they don’t win their league playoff game(s), it could be just two games left in the season.

13. (tie) Challen Faamatau, Farrington >> Pupule rating: 89
5-10, 183, So.
∆∆ vs Waipahu (Aloha) Aug 16 rush 5-28 rec 1-6

∆∆ Total rush 70-455, 5 TD; 6.5 YPC; 65 YPG
rec 7-91, TD; 13 YPR; 13 YPG
Extra point: Tied his season-high with 16 carries against the Sabers.

13. (tie) Daniel Kelley, Maui >> Pupule rating: 89
5-7, 200, Jr.
∆∆ vs Kealakehe (WMS) Aug 15 rush 28-216, TD
∆∆ vs KS-Maui (WMS) Aug 21 rush 14-150, 2 TD
∆∆ vs Baldwin (WMS) Aug 29 rush 10-50, TD
∆∆ vs #9 Lahainaluna (WMS) Sept 13 rush 10-38
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike (WMS) Sept 20 rush 6-64, TD (33) rec 0-0
∆∆ @ King Kekaulike Oct 4 DNP?
∆∆ Total rush 68-518, 5 TD; 7.6 YPC; 103.6 YPG
Extra point: After a huge season-opening performance against Kealakehe, his workload has diminished due to the talented corps of runners at Maui. That’s what works best for the team, but it’s nice for the Sabers to know that Kelley can handle a big workload if necessary.

13. (tie) Sean Noda, Kaimuki >> Pupule rating: 89
5-5, 140, Sr.
∆∆ vs Anuenue (Kaiser Stadium) Aug 23 rush 14-152, 3 TD (6,9,56) rec 2-16

∆∆ @ Waialua Sept 26 rush 18-76 rec 2-27
∆∆ vs Kalaheo (Kaiser Stadium) Oct 3 rush 22-205, TD (72) rec 1-15
∆∆ Total rush 97-659, 5 TD
rec 7-88
KR – TD
Extra point: Career best 205 yards and a TD in the season finale against Kalaheo. This senior was inspiring to watch, a two-way Ironman and kick return on special teams.

13. (tie) Ikaika Piceno, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 89
5-8, 185, Sr.
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 rush 11-126, 2 TD (3,71), 2-pt run pass 2-pt conversion
∆∆ vs McKinley Aug 22 rush 0-0 rec 1-33

∆∆ Total rush 50-310, 5 TD; 6.2 YPC; 62 YPG
rec 9-173, 2 TD; 19.2 YPR; 43.3 YPG
Extra point: With RB Randy Neverson down, Piceno’s contribution is even more vital.

13. (tie) Jahred Silofau, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 89
5-8, 190, So.
∆∆ vs Mililani Aug 16 DNP
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 rush 3-28 rec 0-0

∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 27 rush 3-32, TD (4) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Oct 3 rush 7-20, TD (1)
∆∆ Total rush 48-356, 5 TD; 7.4 YPC; 59.3 YPG
Extra point: The Crusaders used a committee of rushers against Damien: Silofau (seven carries), Jonathon Manalo (six), Ronson Young (six) and Jimmy Gonsalves (three).

13. (tie) Tristin Spikes, Hilo >> Pupule rating: 89
5-8, 175, Sr.
∆∆ vs Waiakea (Wong) Aug 16 rush 12-112, no other stats available
∆∆ vs Hawaii Prep (Wong) Aug 30 rush 9-98, TD (30) rec 3-63, TD

∆∆ @ Honokaa Sept 12
∆∆ @ Kealakehe Sept 20 rush 16-25 rec 2-15
Extra point: Have some missing statistics to gather, but after seeing him play last year (against Campbell), he’s a physical, explosive back. The lack of a consistent passing game puts a little more of the burden on Spikes, but he thrives on it.

20. (tie) Kawika Akahi, King Kekaulike >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ @ KS-Maui Sept 5 rush 14-134, TD rec 0-0
∆∆ vs Baldwin (WMS) Sept 12 rush 25-98, TD (1) rec 0-0 pass 1-10-1-45
∆∆ vs Baldwin Sept 26 rush 7-61, TD (52) rec 0-0
∆∆ vs #9 Lahainaluna Oct 3 rush DNP?
∆∆ Total rush 46-293, 4 TD; 6.4 YPC; 97.7 YPG

Extra point: He plays RB, QB and is a pretty good field-goal kicker, too.

20. (tie) Jhustin Balisacan, Kauai >> Pupule rating: 88
5-9, 170, Jr.
∆∆ @ Konawaena Aug 16 rush 12-76 rec 2-35

∆∆ vs Kapaa (Vidinha) Oct 4 rush 16-55 3-6
∆∆ Total rush 66-363, 3 TD
rec 5-41
Extra point: It’s a down season for the Red Raiders, but Balisacan has put up some solid numbers.

20. (tie) Onosai Emelio, Maui >> Pupule rating: 88
6-0, 225, Sr.
∆∆ vs Kealakehe (WMS) Aug 15 DNP
∆∆ vs KS-Maui (WMS) Aug 21 rush 16-111, TD

∆∆ vs King Kekaulike (WMS) Sept 20 rush 6-42, 3 TD rec 0-0
∆∆ @ King Kekaulike Oct 4 rush 12-144, 3 TD (5,87,5) rec
∆∆ Total rush 33-247, 5 TD; 7.5 YPC; 61.8 YPG
Extra point: Tough for any of the talented Maui running backs to break out, but that depth is what makes their offense that much tougher to stop.

20. (tie) Michael Feliciano, Moanalua >> Pupule rating: 88
∆∆ @ #8 Waianae Aug 15 rush 17-70, TD (32) rec 0-0
∆∆ @ #7 Campbell Aug 22 rush 11-39 rec 3-31, TD (14)

∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 19 rush 9-30 rec 0-0
∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 27 rush 5-26 rec 8-83, TD (8)
∆∆ @ #2 Mililani Oct 4 rush 9-34 rec 5-95, TD (55)
∆∆ Total rush 60-227, TD; 3.8 YPC; 32.4 YPG
rec 28-389, 4 TD; 13.9 YPR; 55.6 YPG
Extra point: Half running back, half receiver, Feliciano has a home in this offense. He produces 88 yards per game from scrimmage, which is a credit to him and his coaching staff. There are offensive geniuses in the NFL who have figured out to unleash multiple-skilled guys like Darren Sproles and Percy Harvin, and there are duds who couldn’t figure out what to do with Devin Hester and Tavon Austin.

20. (tie) Randy Neverson, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 88

Extra point: Season-high 15 carries in the loss to Farrington. Though sharing duties with blazing-fast Terell Johnson cuts the load roughly in half, it’s a big plus for Campbell’s offense to have two quality running backs with fresh legs.

SUMMARY
The quality of top RBs in the ILH and OIA is outstanding with Vavae Malepeai, Wayne Taulapapa, Jensen McDaniel, Kesi Ah-Hoy. Then there’s a multiple-position weapon like Ranan Mamiya. Speedsters like Terell Johnson and K.J. Pascua. But Tristin Spikes (Hilo) is in this elite group, too, a physical, gashing type of back with breakaway speed. Onosai Emelio (6-0, 225) of Maui hasn’t put up huge numbers, but that’s more because of the Sabers’ depth of RB talent. But the most under-the-radar back is probably Jared Rocha-Islas of Lahainaluna. In the Lunas’ misdirection offense, it’s rare for anyone to get more than 15 carries, but Rocha-Islas has been instrumental to their success. When he’s healthy, he’s one of the best in the state.
