XP: The workload has been steady for Malepeai, who passed the 1,000-yard mark in the win over Campbell. A win over Kahuku in the OIA D-I title game means a first-round bye in the state tourney next week. A loss means there’s no rest.

10/22
He’s been dinged up a bit this year, but nothing serious enough to keep him on the bench. Malepeai has played eight games and carried the ball a relatively scant 138 times (17.3 per game), plus kick returns and eight receptions. At this point last year — going into the OIA semifinal round — Malepeai had played eight games (he missed a regular season game with a rib injury) — he had 164 carries (20.5 per game) for 1,035 yards and 15 TDs. And four catches for 32 yards. In other words, if he’s wearing down after two seasons of roughly 19 carries per game, it hasn’t shown yet.

XP: The Red Raiders were the first team to keep Mamiya out of the end zone this season.

10/22
Every defensive game plan against Farrington begins with Mamiya. Just a guess. Beyond all the stupendous numbers, defenses have to account for his presence in the backfield, split out wide, going in motion. It will not surprise me if Coach Randall Okimoto and his staff have a few more wrinkles and gadget plays for Mamiya in the postseason.

3. Wayne Taulapapa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 97

XP: Carried the ball a season-high 20 times for 154 yards and two TDs against Saint Louis, and added a season-high four receptions (25 yards). Now comes a week off since Punahou has already won the ILH title, then a bye week when the state tourney opens next week. Taulapapa will be the freshest RB in the D-I tourney and, possibly, the hungriest.

10/22
His workload has been extremely light due to blowout wins, but in the long run, it’s better for the Buffanblu to have Taulapapa very fresh for the stretch run. At this point a year ago, Punahou had played seven games (including two preseason). This year, there was only one scheduled preseason game and Hurricane Iselle washed that away. So Taulapapa (and his teammates) have played in two fewer games at this same point in the schedule, and he had 112 carries. That’s more than DOUBLE what he’s been asked to do this fall as of Oct. 3. He may not reach last year’s totals — 161 carries, 1,006 yards and 14 TDs, plus nine receptions for 146 yards and three more TDs — but Punahou’s campaign to repeat as state champions is going according to plan.

4. Jensen McDaniel, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 96

XP: Kaiser’s return to Division I football will be remembered for many things, but primarily 1) the 20-19 upset of Kahuku, 2) an amazing season by running back Jensen McDaniel, and 3) a stellar defensive unit.

XP: Kalani curtailed the top rusher in OIA D-II, limiting him to his lowest output since the third game of the season. The absence of standout offensive lineman Lyle Tuiloma (ineligible for one game) was a big factor.

10/22
He rested in lopsided wins over Roosevelt and Waialua. His patience has been rewarded. That’s five 100-yard games in a row or the senior, including 400 rushing yards and four TDs in the last two games, wins over Radford and Kalani.

XP: The workload has piled up gradually, but Pascua keeps running like a man with fresh legs. Mr. Consistency.

10/22
The two quickest RBs I’ve seen on the straight-dive/draw this year have been Waianae’s Jurick Valdez and Pascua. Explosive and compact.

9. (tie) Kaulana Apelu, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 91 (injured)
5-10, 185, Sr.
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif.) Aug 29 rush 10-79 rec 3-42 (INJ – knee)
Extra point: After losing his junior season to injury, he came into the fall prepared for a potential championship run. In less than a full game, Apelu accumulated more than 100 yards against one of the CIF’s top teams on the road, averaging nearly 8 yards per carry. We’ll never know what #13 would’ve done with a healthy, full season. He was explosive, tough and promising as a sophomore two years ago. My guess is that Apelu would’ve had a 1,000-yard season. Coach Cosbie thinks Apelu will rebound and play at the next level. In time, there’s no doubt it can happen.

XP: Season comes to a close for Faumui and the Falcons. QB Tyler Ching went down with an injury in the first half and Nanakuli converged on Faumui after that.

10/22
That’s 67 carries in his last three games. How much more pounding can Faumui take? How much more can he give out? He’s a big back with a body more like a defensive end rather than a DT. If QB Tyler Ching is healthy, that would force defenses to think before stacking the box with eight or nine.

Early in the year, the STL staff was truly perplexed in a good way about the RB situation. Then along came the young sophomore by midseason, and even then, they kept his load light. Last week’s 20-181 line against Kamehameha was a huge factor. The more they run, the better their defense plays. That simple.

10/22
The more the Governors employ Faamatau as a dual threat, the more pressure they’ll put on defense. He’s proven he can produce as a pass catcher. Mamiya is a headache for DCs, but if Faamatau is part of the catch-and-run game, all kinds of possibilities open up for the receiving corps.

XP: Feliciano’s versatility was a good benefit for the Moanalua offense, and he was in the right place at the right time with Coach Jason Cauley. In another offense, he might have been a run-only RB or slotback getting a few targets each game. In this situation, he was able to get plenty of action with both sets of skills, and finished with 687 yards and six TDs from scrimmage in eight games.

XP: The Sabers have been able to move the ball on the ground most nights, but Mililani kept them quite for almost the entire first half in last week’s OIA semifinal.

10/22
The Sabers have quite a luxury with two quality RBs in May and Terell Johnson. May’s familiarity with the offense and quick decisions make him an effective weapon, particularly when they need to move the chains. Two backs with fresh legs throughout a game are a great place to be for the Sabers during the postseason.

SUMMARY
There are several impressive running backs this year, but I also wonder about a large number of RBs who have played part of the season. Some have missed games due to injury, and some I’m not sure at this point what happened. One of them is 6-foot, 225-pound Onosai Emelio of Maui, who did not play in the Sabers’ past two games. The games-played situation has been varied. Mililani’s Vavae Malepeai has gotten his share of carries, though he probably wouldn’t mind getting even more. Then there’s Punahou’s Wayne Taulapapa (10.4 yards per attempt), who team has played in a minimal number of games, and because of blowout wins, his workload has been very light so far. He still runs with ferocity, though, maybe fueled by the lack of action.
