QUARTERBACKS
1. McKenzie Milton, Mililani >> Pupule rating: 98
5-11, 150, Jr.
∆∆ vs #3 Saint Louis Aug 16 21-31-0-369, 4 TD (6,26,15,17) rush 9-204, 3 TD (53,1,47)
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 23 13-15-0-270, 2 TD (78,35) rush 2-22, TD (20)
∆∆ @ #10 Kapolei Aug 30 26-37-2-298, 3 TD (13,25,10) rush 16-88, TD (1)
∆∆ @ Aiea Sept 12 14-28-0-282, 3 TD (53,4,10) rush 3-89, 2 TD (50,20)
∆∆ @ #6 Campbell Sept 19 20-28-1-151, 3 TD (11,14,15) rush 5-102, TD (74)
∆∆ Total 94-139-3-1,370, 15 TD; 67.6%; 9.9 YPA; 274 YPG; 181.71 QBR
rush 35-505, 8 TD; 14.4 YPC; 101 YPG
Extra point: The Campbell game was a demonstration in patience by Milton, who didn’t force any runs. By the time he called his own number on a read-option fake to Vavae Malepeai, the middle of the field was wide open and Milton turned it into a pivotal 74-yard TD run. Untouched. Against one of the best defensive units in the state.

2. Tua Tagovailoa, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 97
6-0, 190, So.
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Aug 16 19-28-0-188, 5 TD (6,12,7,3,7) rush 14-73
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 10-14-0-137, 2 TD (28,15) rush 4-53
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 15-31-1-132, TD (10) rush 7-8
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 21-26-0-440, 4 TD (46,10,64,32) rush 1-55, TD (55)
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 15-16-0-354, 5 TD (67,40,72,6,21) rush 4-47
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha Sept 20 23-33-1-397, 4 TD (28,11,21,25) rush 24-172, TD (2)
∆∆ Total 104-148-2-1,648, 21 TD; 70.3%; 11.1 YPA; 274.7 YPG; 207.93 QBR
rush 54-408, 2 TD; 7.6 YPC; 68 YPG
Extra point: His 569 total yards (and five TDs) against the No. 4 team in the state, absolutely remarkable. Only Milton had more in a single game this fall with 573 total yards (and seven TDs) against then-No. 3 Saint Louis. What intrigues me most is that he’s taken to Ron Lee’s four-wide offense so naturally, making reads so efficiently, in such a short period of time.

3. Ephraim Tuliloa, Punahou >> Pupule rating: 95
6-2, 205, Jr.
∆∆ vs #7 Saint Louis (Aloha) Aug 29 22-35-0-441, 6 TD (45,43,80,11,23,44) rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien (Aloha) Sept 5 DNP (illness)
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 13 9-12-0-178, TD (37) rush 0-0
∆∆ Total 31-47-0-619, 7 TD; 66%; 13.2 YPA; 309.5 YPG; 225.74 QBR
rush 0-0
Extra point: He’s been as precise and crisp as any QB I’ve seen. He could and would put up massive numbers given more playing time, but that’s not a priority for the Buffanblu at this point in the season.

4. Kalanimoku Pauole, Leilehua >> Pupule rating: 94
5-9, 170, Sr.
∆∆ vs Kailua Aug 16 10-17-1-326, 3 TD (66,41,74), 2-pt pass rush 2-16
∆∆ vs McKinley Aug 22 18-22-1-200, 4 TD (10,11,15,30) rush 0-0
∆∆ @ #9 Waianae Aug 29 10-22-2-219, 3 TD (86,1,17) rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Castle Sept 5 26-33-0-280, 5 TD (7,55,9,5,22) rush 0-0
∆∆ @ Waipahu Sept 12 14-18-2-320, 5 TD (16,59,82,61,19) rush 2-13
∆∆ Total 78-112-6-1,345, 20 TD; 69.6%; 12 YPA; 268 YPG; 218.73 QBR
rush 4-29
Extra point: His numbers are on par with the other elite QBs. The only notable factor is that he’s done most of it against unranked defenses — no fault of his own — and that he threw two picks and below 50 percent against the only ranked foe (Waianae). No matter. He’s unbeaten, and that’s not something a lot of QBs can say.

5. Kawika Keama-Jacobe, Moanalua >> Pupule rating: 93
5-10, 171, Sr.
∆∆ @ #8 Waianae Aug 15 14-26-1-191, 2 TD (14,28) rush 15-(-12)
∆∆ @ #7 Campbell Aug 22 14-26-1-126, TD (14) rush 7-35
∆∆ vs #5 Farrington Aug 29 28-51-2-574, 3 TD (52,40,30) rush 8-0
∆∆ vs Kapolei Sept 5 12-19-1-146 rush 7-(-16)
∆∆ vs Aiea Sept 19 21-32-1-335, 2 TD (31,26), two 2-pt passes rush 10-44, 2 TD (2,5)
∆∆ Total 89-154-6-1,372, 8 TD; 58%; 8.9 YPA; 274.4 YPG; 141.98 QBR
two 2-pt conversions by pass
rush 47-51, 2 TD
Extra point: Among the top five QBs, Keama-Jacobe is the only one without a notable running game for support. He was thrown into the fire early and often. The first three opponents were all in the Top 10, and Kapolei was ranked early in the season (and has a defense that is still one of the most formidable). He’s thrown just two picks in his last two games (51 attempts). With Jason Sharsh back, Moanalua’s offense becomes a major headache to game plan for.

6. (tie) Kainoa Ferreira, Pac-Five >> Pupule rating: 90
5-11, 150, So.
∆∆ @ King Kekaulike Aug 16 34-64-0-515, 6 TD (4,15,52,85,29,55) rush 3-(-20)
∆∆ vs St. Francis (Aloha) Aug 29 22-34-2-273, 4 TD (17,31,6,24) rush 0-0
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 5 30-65-1-311, 2 TD (19,21) rush 2-(-2)
∆∆ vs ‘Iolani (Aloha) Sept 20 21-38-1-291, 2 TD (27,79) rush 3-(-8)
∆∆ Total 107-204-4-1,390, 14 TD; 52.5%; 6.8 YPA; 347.5 YPG; 128.41 QBR
rush 8-(-30)
Extra point: Though three of the Wolfpack’s first three foes are in D-II, the first-year starter deserves credit for his discipline. Four picks in 204 attempts is a very respectable rate, and that makes up in a large way for a so-so completion rate (52 percent). This is another situation where the running game isn’t potent, but Ferreira still manages to average nearly 7 yards per pass attempt.

6. (tie) Makoa Filikitonga-Lukea, Lahainaluna >> Pupule rating: 90
5-11, 185, Sr.
∆∆ @ Kapaa (Vidinha) Aug 16 5-11-0-56, TD (29) rush 19-114, 2 TD (6,1)
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike (WMS) Aug 22 7-13-0-48, TD (14) rush 12-127, 2 TD (13,54)
∆∆ vs KS-Maui (WMS) Aug 30 8-11-0-127, 2 TD (9,59) rush 9-64, 2 TD (3,17)
∆∆ vs Baldwin (WMS) Sept 6 3 TD (19,19,29) rush TD (9)
∆∆ vs Maui (WMS) Sept 13 3-9-0-15 rush 0-0
∆∆ Total 23-44-0-248, 4 TD; 52.3%; 5.6 YPA; 61.5 YPG; 128.62 QBR
rush 40-205, 6 TD; 5.1 YPC; 50.3 YPG
Extra point: His team remains unbeaten and virtually unchallenged, and though his numbers aren’t gaudy, his mastery of the Lunas’ wing/fly-sweep and shotgun offenses makes them very difficult to stop.

8. Austin Jim On, ‘Iolani  >> Pupule rating: 89
5-9, 152, Sr.
∆∆ vs Mino Jiyu (Japan) Aug 16 9-12-0-89, TD (20) rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Damien Aug 29 17-25-0-241, 2 TD (61,2) rush 3-(-6)
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis Sept 13 16-26-0-146, TD (15) rush 5-13
∆∆ vs St Francis (Aloha) Sept 20 12-20-0-158, 2 TD (10,25) rush 2-11
∆∆ Total 54-83-0-634, 6 TD; 65.1%; 7.6 YPA; 158.5 YPG; 153.08 QBR
rush 10-18
Extra point: There is no other regular starting QB that has thrown zero picks at this point. Jim On is all about getting the ball out quickly, and his deft handling of the misdirection offense (fly sweep) is key. His accuracy and vision — he has a big-play receiver in Keoni-Kordell Makekau, but doesn’t overly depend on him — help make their running game go.

9. (tie) Ryder Kuhns, Saint Louis >> Pupule rating: 88
6-1, 225, Sr.
∆∆ @ #2 Mililani Aug 16 12-22-2-160, TD (17) rush 4-(-4)
∆∆ vs St. John Bosco (Calif) Aug 22 9-19-0-50 rush 0-0
∆∆ vs #1 Punahou (Aloha) Aug 29 0-1-0 rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Sept 5 4-5-0-60, TD (20) rush 0-0
∆∆ @ ‘Iolani Sept 13 10-10-0-91 rush 0-0
∆∆ vs #4 Kamehameha Sept 20 DNP
∆∆ Total 36-57-2-361, 3 TD; 63.2%; 6.3 YPA; 72.2 YPG; 126.71 QBR
rush 4-(-4)
Extra point: The numbers he put up as a junior starter were often staggering.

9. (tie) Ezra Savea, Campbell >> Pupule rating: 88
6-3, 190, So.
∆∆ vs Castle Aug 15 DNP
∆∆ vs Moanalua Aug 22 18-31-1-222, 2 TD (15,16) rush 8-25
∆∆ vs Kailua Sept 5 15-18-0-296, 6 TD (26,20,15,15,19,10) rush 0-0
∆∆ @ Kapolei Sept 12 15-31-3-221, 2 TD (13,75) rush 5-(-2)
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Sept 19 14-26-4-235, 2 TD (47), 2-pt pass rush 7-(-34)
∆∆ Total 62-106-8-984, 12 TD; 58.5%; 9.3 YPA; 246 YPG; 158.73 QBR
rush 20-(-11)
Extra point: The sophomore had his struggles against Mililani’s pass rush, and his inexperience showed on the deep ball — getting picked four times. But Savea is only four games into his prep career and the upside remains enormous.

9. (tie) Fatu Sua-Godinet, Kamehameha >> Pupule rating: 88
5-10, 160, Sr.
∆∆ @ Del Oro (Calif.) Aug 29 7-20-2-66, TD rush 14-69, TD
∆∆ vs St. Francis Sept 5 5-6-0-82 rush 8-72, 2 TD (38,5)
∆∆ vs Damien Sept 11 13-20-0-181, TD (17) rush 9-26
∆∆ vs #8 Saint Louis (Aloha) Sept 20 14-30-2-264, 2 TD (21,4) rush 18-121, 2 TD (12,14)
∆∆ Total 39-76-4-593, 4 TD; 51.3%; 7.8 YPA; 148.3 YPG; 123.70 QBR
rush 49-288, 5 TD; 5.9 YPC; 72 YPG
Extra point: His evolution as a quarterback continues at warp speed. His 385 total yards on Saturday could just be the beginning of something new.

12. (tie) Kale Kanehailua, Nanakuli >> Pupule rating: 87
5-10, 160, Sr.
∆∆ vs Kalaheo Aug 16 DNP?
∆∆ vs Roosevelt Aug 29 15-29-0-279, 3 TD rush 7-74, 2 TD
∆∆ @ Waialua Sept 6 7-10-2-128, 2 TD rush 14-100, TD
∆∆ vs Kaimuki Sept 13 15-28-1-203, 2 TD (21,50) rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Anuenue Sept 19 4-4-0-64, 3 TD (10,40,5) rush 1-20
∆∆ Total 41-71-3-687, 10 TD; 57.8%; 9.9 YPA; 171.8 YPG; QBR
rush 22-194, 3 TD
Extra point: His statistics slowed last weekend, but that was to be expected in minimal playing time. Go back some weeks and it would be tough to ask for more: 353 total yards, five TDs against Roosevelt; 228 total yards, three TDs against Waialua; 203 total yards (all passing), two TDs agains Kaimuki. He’s clearly in the running for OIA D-II offensive player of the year honors. (Coaches pick that honor, by the way.)

12. (tie) Chase Newton, KS-Maui >> Pupule rating: 87
∆∆ vs Maui (WMS) Aug 21 19-38-1-225, TD (5) rush 17-73
∆∆ vs Lahainaluna (WMS) Aug 30 10-30-2-116, TD (43) rush 23-120, 2 TD
∆∆ vs King Kekaulike Sept 5 1-1-0-5 rush 8-67
∆∆ vs Baldwin Sept 19 27-52-0-376, 2 TD (87,10) rush 0-0
∆∆ Total 57-121-3-822, 4 TD; 47.1%; 6.8 YPA; 164.4 YPG; 110.12 QBR
rush 48-260, 2 TD; 5.4 YPC; 65 YPG
Extra point: With just three picks in 121 pass attempts, it’s clear Newton has an element of discipline in his aerial approach. At 47 percent for a completion rate, as well as his running prowess (5.4 yards per carry), it’s also reasonable to see that he’s more pure athlete than pure passer. Win or lose, it’s fascinating to see his development. Anybody who can throw for 376 yards against a competitive D-I defensive unit, Baldwin — along with two TDs and zero picks — is certainly a weapon.

12. (tie) Jordan Taamu, Pearl City >> Pupule rating: 87
∆∆ vs Roosevelt Aug 15 3-4-0-32, TD (25) rush 1-2 TD (2)
∆∆ @ Waialua Aug 23 19-29-1-213, 2 TD (15,15) rush 6-76
∆∆ vs Kaimuki Aug 29 11-18-0-129, 3 TD (6,10,10) rush 2-37
∆∆ vs Anuenue Sept 5 forfeit W
∆∆ vs Radford (Aiea field) Sept 20 20-31-0-241, 3 TD (56,9,13) rush 0-0
∆∆ Total 53-82-1-615, 8 TD; 64.6%; 7.5 YPA; 153.8 YPG; 157.39 QBR
rush 9-115, TD
Extra point: Taamu could be a superior quarterback to any of his contemporaries with ratings in the high 80s. He is unbeaten so far this season. His completion rate is among the best in the state at nearly 65 percent. He’s thrown just one pick in 82 attempts. He’s even averaging more than 12 yards per carry. The only question is about Pearl City’s S.O.S. (strength of schedule). Radford provided a quality test and he passed with flying colors. He gets another test this weekend against another unbeaten squad: Nanakuli.

15. (tie) Kalawai‘a Judd, Kaiser >> Pupule rating: 85
Sr.
∆∆ vs Aiea Aug 15 16-30-0-160, 2 TD (20,18) rush 10-86
∆∆ vs Waianae Aug 22 4-15-3-20 rush 10-43
∆∆ vs Waipahu Sept 5 7-12-2-206, 2 TD (76,39) rush 10-27
∆∆ vs McKinley (Ticky) Sept 12 16-26-2-252, 2 TD (34,22) rush 7-52
∆∆ vs #3 Kahuku Sept 19 10-20-0-325, 2 TD (87,99) rush 13-16, TD (1)
∆∆ Total 53-103-7-963, 8 TD; 51.5%; 9.3 YPA; 192.6 YPG; 142.03 QBR
rush 50-224; 4.5 YPC; 44.8 YPG
Extra point: Like Sua-Godinet, Judd is a converted wide receiver. Unlike the Kamehameha QB, however, who began his apprenticeship at the position a year ago, Judd has just begun. His struggles against Waianae’s stellar defense was telling and expected. But Judd has progressed since as he learns on the job, throwing six TDs combined in his last three games. His performance against Kahuku, which included no interceptions, was astounding for a player in his first season at the position.

15. (tie) Alton Julius, Kapolei >> Pupule rating: 85
6-1, 210, Sr.
∆∆ @ #5 Kahuku Aug 15 12-24-0-116, TD (17) rush 8-(-19), TD
∆∆ @ #6 Farrington (Ticky) Aug 23 10-17-0-142, 3 TD (29,27,15) rush 2-(-8)
∆∆ vs #2 Mililani Aug 30 8-24-3-118, 2 TD (19,20) rush 7-22
∆∆ @ Moanalua Sept 5 5-12-0-86 rush 11-77
∆∆ #6 Campbell Sept 12 16-28-2-204, TD (31) rush 8-29
∆∆ vs Kailua Sept 19 8-19-0-100, TD (15) rush 8-16
∆∆ Total 59-124-5-766, 8 TD; 47.6%; 6.2 YPA; 153.2 YPG; 112.70 QBR
rush 44-117, TD
Extra point: His stats may be modest, but his ability to move the chains as a runner is very good, and he’s become fairly reliable at hitting the out route for first downs. Like Judd, Julius is a first-year quarterback at the varsity level.

17. (tie) Rudy Agoot, Kapaa >> Pupule rating: 84
6-0, 195, Sr.
∆∆ vs Lahainaluna (Vidinha) Aug 16 6-15-0-72 rush 11-31, TD (8)
∆∆ @ Waimea (Hanapepe) Aug 29 4-9-0-82, 2 TD (54,13) rush 11-40, TD (5)
∆∆ @ Kauai (Vidinha) Sept 12 4-11-0-108, 2 TD (59,24) rush 12-92, TD (12)
∆∆ vs Waimea (Vidinha) Sept 20 statistics n/a
∆∆ @ Kauai (Vidinha) Oct 4
∆∆ @ Waimea (Hanapepe) Oct 11
∆∆ @ Kauai (Vidinha) Oct 25
∆∆ Total 14-35-0-262, 4 TD; 42.9%; 7.5 YPA; 87.3 YPG; 140.59 QBR
rush 34-163, 3 TD; 4.8 YPC; 54.3 YPG
Extra point: The Warriors are unbeaten and they have a quarterback who has yet to throw an interception, can run with the ball, and doesn’t need to throw 30 times to be effective.

17. (tie) Montana Liana, Farrington >> Pupule rating: 84
6-2, 212, Sr.
∆∆ vs Waipahu (Aloha) Aug 16 2-8-2-12 rush 1-24
∆∆ vs #9 Kapolei (Ticky) Aug 23 6-10-0-39 rush 4-(-2)
∆∆ @ Moanalua Aug 29 11-21-1-117, TD (24) rush 5-8
∆∆ vs Aiea (Ticky) Sept 6 7-13-0-100 rush 3-(-8)
∆∆ @ Kailua Sept 12 16-23-0-216, 2 TD (35,5) rush 4-(-5)
∆∆ Total 42-75-3-474, 3 TD; 56%; 6.3 YPA; 94.8 YPG; 114.29 QBR
rush 17-17
Extra point: His first 200-yard game of the season comes just in time. Opposing defensive coordinators won’t be able to focus solely on Farrington’s ground attack.

17. (tie) Tuli Wily-Matagi, Kahuku >> Pupule rating: 84
∆∆ vs #10 Kapolei Aug 15 7-12-0-145, TD (20) rush 7-27 rec 1-1, TD (1)
∆∆ vs Waipahu Aug 22 3-5-0-36 rush 2-16, TD (10)
∆∆ vs McKinley (Ticky) Aug 29 11-18-0-147, 2 TD (10,15) rush 3-7
∆∆ @ Castle Sept 12 5-9-0-99 rush 4-13
∆∆ @ Kaiser Sept 19 6-13-3-157, TD (70) rush 7-81, TD (65)
∆∆ Total 32-57-3-584, 4 TD; 56.1%; 10.2 YPA; 116.8 YPG; 154.84 QBR
rush 23-144, 2 TD; 6.3 YPC; 28.8 YPG
Note: Committed to Utah as TE
Extra point: After going four games without throwing a pick, he tossed three in the loss to Kaiser.

20. (tie) Micah Kanehailua, KS-Hawaii >> Pupule rating: 82
5-10, 160, Sr.
∆∆ @ Konawaena Aug 29 7-25-1-89, 2 TD rush 5-42, TD;
∆∆ @ #10 Hilo (Wong) Sep 5 25-49-2-277, 2 TD rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Kealakehe Sept 12 22-37-0-357, 5 TD (3,6,32,13,30) rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Waiakea Sept 19 17-29-3-149, 3 TD rush
∆∆ Total 71-140-6-876, 12 TD; 50.7%; 6.5 YPA; 219 YPG; 122.99 QBR
rush 5-42, TD
Extra point: Take away the giveaways (six interceptions) and Kanehailua’s numbers would rate with the elite QBs. He seemed to be on an upswing until throwing three picks against Waiakea.

20. (tie) Kawika Ulufale, St. Francis >> Pupule rating: 82
5-8, 162, So.
∆∆ @ Keaau Aug 16 22-28-1-224, 2 TD rush 14-58, TD
∆∆ vs Holy Trinity (Canada) Aug 23 6-8-0-98, TD rush 0-0
∆∆ vs Pac-Five (Aloha) Aug 29 17-28-0-158, 2 TD rush 12-45
∆∆ @ #3 Kamehameha Sept 5 8-20-1-48 rush 4-(-28)
∆∆ @ #1 Punahou Sept 13 5-9-1-32 rush 0-0
∆∆ Total 58-93-3-560, 5 TD; 62.4%; 6.0 YPA; 112 YPG; 124.24 QBR
rush 30-75, TD
Extra point: His effectiveness (62 percent completion rate) and mobility are big plus factors for the Saints.

Ioane Kaluhiokalani, Waianae >> Pupule rating: 80
6-1, 195, Sr.
∆∆ vs Moanalua Aug 15 DNP
∆∆ @ #10 Kaiser Aug 22 5-14-0-82, TD rush 13-54

Tevita Lino, Kaimuki >> Pupule rating: 80
∆∆ vs Anuenue (Kaiser Stadium) Aug 23 6-14-1-55, TD (36) rush 4-35

SUMMARY
The good get better and the great ones keep dominating. If anything, last week showed us that converting receivers into quarterbacks is worth the risk. Sua-Godinet and Judd had humongous performances. Sua-Godinet is more than one year into his craft as a varsity QB while Judd just took the reins this fall.
