Coming in at No. 9 in the Star-Advertiser preseason Top 10 football poll are the Leilehua Mules, who are looking to get back to the state tournament.

The Mules were in contention for the OIA Red title until the very end last season, losing 21-14 to Kahuku in their second-to-last game in the regular season. Leilehua ended the season with a convincing win over Kaiser, but lost out on a tiebreaker to the Red Raiders for the No. 1 seed out of the Red. The Mules drew a tough quarterfinal matchup against Campbell and went from a 6-1 regular season to one-and-done in the playoffs, losing 20-14 to the Sabers.

Paul Honda spoke with Leilehua coach Nolan Tokuda for the preview story running in Wednesday’s newspaper and was excited about the Mules’ new wrinkles on offense.

Offensive coordinator Bobby George has created some intriguing new looks, including a four-wide, one tight end set with no running back. Kaleo Aloha Piceno, a converted slotback, is the top choice to run Leilehua’s offense this season.

The Mules open with Punahou to start the season on Aug. 8 and kick off conference play at Kailua on Aug. 14.

Our Leilehua team page includes the top-10 single-game leaders in school history dating back to 1973.
