Radford hires Lon Passos as football coach

Lon Passos is the new football head coach at Radford, Rams athletic director Kelly Sur wrote in an email to the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and Hawaii Prep World on Tuesday.

Passos was an offensive line coach for Radford from 1997 through this past season, when the Rams went 13-0 and won the Division II state championship as well as the Oahu Interscholastic Association title under head coach coach Fred Salanoa.

Passos was also the Radford softball coach from 2001 to ’03, the Rams baseball head coach from 2000 to ’10 and an assistant baseball coach from 1997 to ’99. He is also a math teacher and assistant athletic director at the school.

In addition, Radford hired Eric Lalau as the defensive coordinator, according to Sur.

Salanoa spent 13 seasons as the Rams coach, taking over for Sur in 2003. Salanoa stepped down to spend more time with his wife and seven daughters.
