ON THIS DATE IN 2004: Lahainaluna’s Preston Medeiros tricks Mililani

On this date in 2004, Preston Medeiros snuck in from a year out with 9.2 seconds left to lead Lahainaluna to a 41-34 win over Mililani in the state tournament at War Memorial Stadium.

Lahainaluna needed to travel 65 yards in 1:35 to keep its season going. Medeiros moved the Lunas all the way to the 1-yard line and settled for a game-tying field goal on third down with the clock running. After the unit sprinted onto the field and set up, Medeiros, the holder, approached center Joey Luuwai and hatched a plan.

With Mililani defenders preparing to block the field goal, Luuwai snapped the ball to Medeiros and watched him sneak into the end zone untouched.

“I kinda made that call on my own,” Medeiros said. “Especially the way we were kicking.”

Lahainaluna kicker Colby Wycoff missed two extra points previously but drilled three, including the one after Medeiros heroics.

“It was a surprise to us, but it was a good one,” Lahainaluna coach Bobby Watson said.
