ON THIS DATE (2003): Damien Torres takes over as Kailua running back

On this date in 2003, Damien Torres proved without a shadow of a doubt that Kailua would be just fine at the running back position.

Torres, a linebacker, torched McKinley for 184 rushing yards in a 26-21 victory over McKinley. He had 235 yards as Sua’s backup in a 47-7 win over Roosevelt the previous week and finished the season with six straight 100-yard games before being held to 77 by Kahuku in the OIA championship game.

Torres was pressed into action because of an ankle injury to baseball standout Kekoa Sua, who scored six touchdowns in a half against Kaimuki a month earlier. After six games, Torres and Sua were 1-2 in OIA East rushing.

Darren Johnson‘s crew made it to the state tournament, but lost 20-13 to Baldwin at War Memorial Stadium. Torres scored two touchdowns and Sua had Kailua’s only pass reception.

The Torres-Sua combo was probably the most prolific duo in Kailua histroy, with Sua holding the school’s top single-game rushing performance along with the fifth-best. Torres holds down the 7-8-9 spots with four of the top 10 happening in 2003.
