For the second year in a row, the OIA football crossover games remain the same, meaning Kahuku and Kapolei will face off again in the opening week of the OIA season the week of August 14/15.
The two teams will meet for the third time in 12 months in a rematch of last season’s OIA opener, won 33-19 by the Red Raiders. The teams met again in the quarterfinals of the OIA playoffs, with Kahuku ending Kapolei’s season with a 9-0 victory.
Defending state champion Mililani faces McKinley in a crossover game before an early-season showdown in the OIA Blue against Campbell the following weekend. Quarterback McKenzie Milton, who has committed to Hawaii, and running back Vavae Malepeai will both be on record watch all season long.
Milton (25 games, 373-for-571 (65.3 percent), 4,959 yards, 51 TD, 14 INT), will start the year needing 3,042 yards to tie Timmy Chang‘s state record for pass yards with 8,001. Milton threw for 3,339 yards during his junior season.
Malepeai (24 games, 458 carries, 2,619 yards, 43 TDs) needs 1,386 yards to tie Joe Igber‘s career mark of 4,428 yards and 13 rushing touchdowns to tie Igber’s 56. Malepeai has rushed for at least 1,200 yards and 20 touchdowns in his previous two seasons.
