Nihipali-Botelho stokes Kahuku’s fire

Stokes Nihipali-Botelho has been making big plays in the limelight for the top-ranked Kahuku Red Raiders for two seasons now.

It’s a wonder opposing quarterbacks even throw in his direction. The defensive back, it seems, comes up with at least one interception per game. Sometimes two.

He had two picks in the Red Raiders’ 44-0 home victory over Campbell on Friday night, and he also had a ton of return yardage. And, let’s not forget, he kicked all six of his extra-point attempts.

Nihipali-Botelho was a huge part of Kahuku’s run to the Division I state championship when he was a junior a year ago. This year, as a senior, he is making sure that the team’s defensive unit at least comes close to last year, when the unit was arguably the best the state has ever seen, having yielded less than 4 points per game.

Aside from the stats he’s piling up, let’s take a look at what makes him special. From this vantage point, he has all the tools and instincts, but probably the best one is timing. He knows when to break on the football from his cornerback position.

Early in the game against Campbell, Sabers quarterback Kawika Ulufale tested Botelho directly by throwing a high ball to the 6-foot-3, 190-pound Markus Ramos. Nihipali-Botelho, at 5-10, 150, was giving away five inches and 40 pounds.

Sure enough, Ramos won that first physical battle — by a hair. But the next time Ulufale went to Ramos on that side, Botelho stepped in front of the pass and picked it off.

Impeccable timing.

“He’s just a class act,” Kahuku head coach Vavae Tata said after Friday’s win, the team’s 17th in a row without a loss since he was hired. “He does it all. He tries to beat his previous best. That’s what we all try to do on defense, beat our previous best performance.”

That makes a lot of sense. A year ago, the Red Raiders ‘D’ started aggressively in a 50-0 season-opening home win over Campbell and kept improving each week until the whole thing came fully together in a 39-14 win over Saint Louis in the state championship game.

Sitting in the Aloha Stadium stands and watching that defense closely, it looked like a titanium umbrella that nothing was going to get through. Full protection of their turf. Keala Santiago, Nihipali-Botelho, Kekaula Kaniho … the top of that umbrella. Hungry linemen and linebackers lining up in multiple different looks with blitzing coming from many different directions and making star quarterback Tua Tagovailoa throw the ball up for grabs a few times.

Well, what will this year’s defense be like when it rounds all the way into form? Early-season bets were that they could not come near last season. But, those odds could be changing. Nihipali-Botelho and Kaniho, the team’s other cornerback that figuratively has “aggressive” and “intangibles” written all over his scouting report, are there in the defensive backfield. Instead of Santiago, who is now at UH, they have Kesi Ah-Hoy, who is a football player’s football player. He’s quick, he’s fast, he can hit, he can overpower, he can make moves (he returned an interception 52 yards for a TD against Campbell) and he is the ultimate leader, according to his coaches. The way he plays with everything he’s got kind of, sort of make him the “ultimate Red Raider.” But, we all know we could argue that point all day.

Don’t forget to add in Miki Ah You, a sophomore who showed off his linebacker skills with multiple tackles, including a few body slams, against the Sabers (2-3, 2-2 OIA Blue).

Ah You also sacked Ulufale in the end zone for a safety for a 9-0 first-quarter lead. Three of his tackles were for loss and he topped it off with a blocked a punt that led to Kahuku’s second-to-last touchdown.

Take a look at this list of others who had a tackle for loss (kind of makes sense that the list is long, since, all told, Campbell was held to negative-15 yards on the night): Toalei Lefau (two), Jarom Wesley, Sioeli Naupoto, Kaniho, Aliki Vimahi (sack), Sedric Iafeta, Marcus Damuni (sack) and Samson Kapule-Siilata.

Samson Reed and George Lauhingoa contributed to the monster defensive night with fumble recoveries for Kahuku (4-0, 4-0 OIA Blue).

But, back to Nihipali-Botelho. Aside from his two interceptions, he had several breakups. And let’s also take a look at his return yardage. He ran back the opening kickoff against Campbell 84 yards for a touchdown (in the journalism business, mentioning that igniting moment this late in the story is called burying the lead).

In addition, Nihipali-Botelho returned one of his picks for 41 yards and added a 40-yard punt return. Combined with the kickoff return, that’s at least 165 yards in returns for the night.

“This whole week we’ve been practicing all of our special teams, so everybody was on,” Nihipali-Botelho said. “We were making sure all of us were 100 percent and knew our jobs, so we just had to come out and execute, and — with all of that combined with what I did — it felt really good.

“We’ve got a lot to work on, giving up too much yards, too many big plays. We’ve just got to come back next week (to prepare for the Radford game on Friday), start working on it and hopefully come out better.”

That’s Tata’s way of saying, “Beat our previous best performance.”

The Rams (0-4, 0-3), next week’s opponent, won the Division II state championship a year ago before moving up to D-I to start this season. It will be Kahuku’s final game before heading to Las Vegas for a Sept. 17 matchup against Bishop Gorman, the No. 1 team in the USA Super 25.

There were a handful of players for Campbell who had a big night defensively, including Poki‘i Adkins-Kupukaa (two fumble recoveries and a clutch tackle on a Kahuku fourth down and 2 situation), freshman linebacker Tyrese Tafai (multiple tackles), and Jeremiah Leaeno (forced fumble).

The Sabers have a bye next weekend and return to action Sept. 16 against Moanalua (2-2, 1-2). It will be Campbell’s first home game since 2014. The Sabers played on the road all of last season and part of this season with the field and surrounding track getting improvements.

Scary good, Kahuku D scored in every game this year and their special teams have scored in every game but one (Waianae). Of course that doesn’t meet the avg ilh fans standards but you must admit, St. Louis is also a victim to the domination of the Kahuku “D” until proven otherwise….. IMO

.So pls….. don’t bash me, I am also not a Kahuku alumni. I just called it how it is, Sorry in advance if anybody is offended…. ia fa laia (Aloha)……..

  2. 87 September 3, 2016 11:30 pm

my hunch is that kahukus reputation on the island as defensive bullies add a little pshycological edge against the local competition, will be interesting to see if those stats hold up against a BG team who are used to overwhelming their opponents in all phases of the game.

  3. ill September 4, 2016 8:30 am

Kahuku’s schedule: Aiea, ha, Campbell, ha, Kaiser, ha, Moanalua, ha, Radford, ha, Waianae, okay, Kahuku’s schedule very weak, most games will be a cake walk for Kahuku, need to put Kahuku with the following teams next year: KAMEHAMEHA, PUNAHOU, ST. LOUIS, MILILANI, FARRINGTON, WAIANAE, KAPOLEI, LEILEHUA, i bet Kahuku would have at least two losses with this format, maybe three to be exact. With the schedule Kahuku has now Mililani would love this schedule. even Damien from the I.L.H. would love the schedule Kahuku has now, Bishop Gorman is just in a different league from all teams here in Hawaii, but it will be nice to see what Kahuku can do to with Bishop Gorman on the 17th of September, hopefully they don’t get blown out like 63 to 3, like Hawaii lost Michigan this past Saturday, now when Kahuku loses to Bishop Gorman, please Kahuku fans, we don’t want to hear any excuses, just take your lost as a lost.

  4. RR4L80 September 4, 2016 8:40 am

Totally agree with coach Tata…You gotta improve every game, and it’s showing. ..Good job Coaches. ..Keep up the good work. ..

  5. red x September 4, 2016 9:23 am

    @ILL
do you think Kahuku pick who they play? and I kahuku would love to play all the top 10 teams in the state. You could even at add damien and kapaa. As for me on bishop I expect them to win by atleast 40 pts. Bishop winning

  6. Alohachef September 4, 2016 9:38 am

@ill the OIA makes the schedule and the divisions. The league has always promoted teams that have winning records for 2 years from the lower D2 division to the upper Red & Blue divisions. But that doesn’t work out because it usually happens after the seniors and experienced group have graduated. Everyone, except for Red Raider Nation, alumni, community, and the team themselves, are doubting Kahuku’s chances against Bishop Gorman. Yes, Gorman, two-time number one high school in the nation, might have it all such as great facilities, rich backers& alumni, and the ability to recruit and build a solid program. They have proven they are bigger, stronger, and faster than a lot of teams they have played. They even have a bit of swagger and attitude. On paper it looks like Kahuku doesn’t even belong on the same field. One thing is for sure, Kahuku will display their heart and will to excell. Coach Tata and his staff will keep them focused and prepare them. As long as they execute and be true to their game plan they will battle, no matter the outcome.

  7. Curious George September 4, 2016 10:15 am

Good luck to the red raiders when they go to battle against BG, play safe and play fast. Idky everyone is downing kahuku. Ultimately they represent our state so why wish negativity on the kids we should want the best for them. Good luck to them and all teams in the state for the rest of the season..

  8. RRFLbaby September 4, 2016 10:45 am

    Well said Curious George.

This year’s D looks to be on pace to match last year’s as far as points allowed. They’re already in the vicinity with a 5.5 pt avg.

  9. 88 September 4, 2016 11:58 am

@ill No matter what the schedule is Kahuku would still be Top Dawg. Every team you mentioned above Kahuku beat. 4 out the 8 teams you mentioned above kahuku already played this year in an actual full game and beat. Stop hating and put your Red shirt on boy…..

  10. Football Fan September 4, 2016 1:23 pm

Aloha ill, like your name your comments are ill, as a matter of fact they are childish. I am not a Kahuku alumni but I have come to appreciate watching their teams play. What makes them different is the level of passion that they bring to the field. Before you compare them to the run that St. Louis had please keep this mind, none of the OIA and even ILH schools recruited like St Louis. They had a lot of star athletes from many communities around the state and many of them were from Kahuku. They were the BG of Hawaii at that time, their program had money, they ran an offense that no one else was using and they were bigger, faster, and stronger. But you know something there was one team they always had trouble with and that was Kahuku. Today it is a differenst story, the shoe is on the other foot and people especially you St Louis fans can not tolerate. One thing I want to encourage you with is when you make assumption, accusations please do your research. Speculations such as your is totally out of line, one would think that your comments would offer clear insight. However, ILL, for someone posing to be an expert in making analytical assessments you seem to be misinformed or even uneducated by implying that Kahuku makes their own schedules, and let me tell you I for one can not wait until the reorganized format take place so people like you can be silenced #knowyourfacts #research
    #doyourhomework #alltalk

  13. Manley September 4, 2016 3:22 pm

Stokes is a very good player. Besides being beastly, Kahuku now possess high football IQ. That goes excellent with that DNA.

  14. anywaaaays!! September 4, 2016 3:35 pm

It’s that lil skinny beach boy 808rr4l from sandy beach playing his uke at the bus stop, he needs a hug.

    @ ill
everybody looks good until they play Kahuku. The old east/west format was canned because everyone said Kahuku was winning titles because they had a weak schedule in the east, now its geographically mixed with blue/red and they still saying our schedule is weak even though we got the west Waianae and Campbell in our division. Now the ILH crying saying the entire OIA is too weak and thats why Kahuku has an easy road to the State Championship game.

So now what? They really want Kahuku to join the ILH now because they cant stand Kahuku domination. Truth is that the ILH is a faster league but not a stronger league. Every time we play Waianae/Farrington/Kapolei our kids get banged up because its a physical game, when we play the ILH its all about passing and speed. So the toughest conference is the OIA for Kahuku.

  15. 808 RR4L September 4, 2016 5:10 pm

OH LOOK! IT’S THAT ONE SKINNY BEACH BOY NAMED “ANYWAAAYS” PROJECTING HIS OWN INSECURITIES ON ME! BRAH, MAYBE YOU THE SKINNY ONE THAT WISH HE WAS BIG?? WHAT, YOU LIKE ME HUG YOU? AHAHAHAHAAHA

RR4L! HATE US CUZ YOU AINT US BRUH

  16. ill September 4, 2016 5:10 pm

I’m a Kailua Surfrider not from the ILH, so i’m just saying Kahuku will not win at Bishop Gorman or even be in a close match, and this year the ILH will win the States, Punahou or St. louis, these two are better teams than last year. oh, and go Surfriders not Seariders or Red Raiders. also just to let you know about the ILH recruiting, it was always there and it will always be there, so stop winding, when the teams in the ILH wins they win with excitement, Kahuku wins but in an ugly way, not very exciting, but yes a win is a win, but I believe the ILH will win it all this year. Sorry, but that’s my opinion.

  17. 808 RR4L September 4, 2016 5:11 pm

HOW COME, ANYWAAAYS? YOU SKINNY? YOU FEEL INSECURE? COME DOWN FIVE GUYS. I BUY YOU SOME FOOD.

  19. Northshore September 4, 2016 6:06 pm

There’s some staunch supporters of Kahuku on this blog and there’s couple of haters that are predicting the worst for Kahuku when we play BG. That’s all OK because everyone has the right to their opinion whether if’s because of jealousy or because of being sore losers. I myself would be supportive if any Hawaii high school competed against a school from another state and I would wish them all the luck because of being proud from Hawaii. It will be a difficult task to beat BG especially as being the number 1 high school football team in the nation. It will give our Red Raiders the experience in their lifetime and an educational one at that. “Humble” is the word, but carry a big stick and silence is golden. We don’t need to brag because our boys accomplishments has been decided on the playing field and whether we win or lose, the main thing is that no one gets hurt and their learning experience is worth making the trip. So all of you that have mocked Kahuku, eat your heart out because Kahuku is the Pride of the Northshore no matter…win or lose.

  20. anywaaaays!! September 4, 2016 6:13 pm

ill, you are falling in love with the hype, thats what everyone said lastyear about St. Louis and Mililani tearing apart Kahuku but the opposite happened, and they will do it again this year because of defense and special teams. Did you not see Kamehameha implement a jumbo package against Punahou last week? Waianaes got one. Teams are starting to use the formula that Kahuku laid out…defense and run out the clock to counter these high octane offenses. Why? because not every team has the luxury of having skilled QB’s and receivers, here in Hawaii most teams do have big Polynesian kids to run smash mouth so why not use whats in your backyard?

BG doesnt only recruit 5 or 10 blue chippers like the ILH does every year – they recruit the entire 60 man roster so you better believe that every 60 of those kids are D1 talent. Kahuku has about seven D1 prospects so its not hard to see why no one except RR fans think Kahuku can win. If Kahukus defense can slow that BG offense (which is a high task) I think we might have a game.

Kahukus slow paced boring offense is a true testament to their reliance on homegrown talent. The few skilled players that are in our district end up recruited to the ILH so over the years we learned to ditch the passing game and do what is in our DNA – smashmouth. Tata knew this all along and knew his jumbo package from Stanford fit perfect at Kahuku thats why he came here. Now with our freshman sensation QB we are slowly starting to throw the ball.

Instead of the state of Hawaii complain about our boring offense why dont they do something and try stop it? or better yet, beat us in the first round of playoffs so you dont have to see it anymore.

  21. Jason Keuma September 4, 2016 6:33 pm

@ill. If your school was playing BG. I would be cheering for them.

You saying Kahuku plays a “weak” schedule. That’s what “they” said last year on TV., a couple of hours before the ILH champion ( with out any 5th year seniors since the state championship era ) got man handled. To say that the OIA is weak, you should check the last 17 years who won, OIA 10, ILH 7.

  22. AUWE September 4, 2016 6:41 pm

@ill. You are absolutely right, every year kahuku has a cake walk!! Even last years state championship was a cakewalk…. OIA teams gave them more of a hard time then ummmm. Well you know the story….I give them credit for taking on the #1 team in the nation. I don’t know of any other team in the state that took on a big of task as Kahuku… Good luck boys on the 17th…talk about excuses, every year ILH cry cuz they gotta play each other and act like they got it hard….. Give me a break!! ILH get the biggest cry bebes in da state… Nuff already

  23. AUWE September 4, 2016 6:48 pm

Next years format just let every team in the ILH in the state tournament so we no need hea dam cry anymore. I’m sure if they lose this year going have some uddah excuse!!! Just let um all in…

  24. ilh September 4, 2016 7:30 pm

Jason Keuma, go check back from 1986 to 1999 and see how many ILH titles and Prep Bowls St. Louis won, and how many more the should have won, remember those gamblers out there that probably paid the coaches at St. Louis to lose some of those games cause they were so dominating back than, a lot of people were getting tired of watching or hearing about St. Louis, even a few years back when Punahou was winning everything, people hated Punahou too. So go do you homework before you post something.

  25. ilh September 4, 2016 7:36 pm

And Auwe, no talk now, wait till the final game of the State Tournament than talk, right now it’s all hype for you. You might be wearing Blue after the State Tournament this year.

  26. anywaaaays!! September 4, 2016 8:25 pm

ilh, we did wait till the end of the 2015 tournament and we won so we can talk all we want till the next state 2016 title game and if STL/PUN win then you guys can talk all you like.

From 1986 to 1999 STL won everything but thats because they recruited the best talent and then in addition held them back a year so they had many 5th year seniors. In the new state tourney era started in 1999 STL 5th year seniors were banned from the tourney and thats when Cal Lees crusader era came to an end, only winning 2 titles in the last 17 years.

  27. RR4L01 September 4, 2016 8:35 pm

  28. AUWE September 4, 2016 9:19 pm

Faavae and aalona had pretty good games but keo was a beast that game! I not sure how much he had but I know was ova 100 yards… And the difference in that game was the two point conversion keo ran in that the ref called him down at da 1 lol… St. Louis also lost the ball inside their 10 on a fumble that they called down by contact lmao! Dat was a good one… Kahuku almost had that year….

  29. Hauula93 September 4, 2016 9:45 pm

Jason Keo and Issac aalona, I know that for sure..They came from Hauula..

@Ilh. Google: ILH fifth year seniors. Scroll down to an article written on January 28,1999. It explains that an obstacle to establishing a state championship is to have the ILH to agree to limit eligibility to just 8 consecutive semesters.

Ancient history Homework done, now let’s talk about current events. Since agreeing to the 8 consecutive semester rule the ILH has a record of 7 wins out of 17 tries.

Homework quiz. Who was the last two losses by BG at the hands of? Hint, they were not private schools.

“Ancient history Homework done, now let’s talk about current events. Since agreeing to the 8 consecutive semester rule the ILH has a record of 7 wins out of 17 tries.”

I think I would need more evidence that ILH dominance before the state championship era was primarily because of fifth year seniors. How many of those starters were fifth year seniors? How much of St Louis’s dominance was due to coaching and scheme and the fact that OIA football didn’t catch up yet? Even during the state championship era, I would argue that ILH, top to bottom (and granted, it’s a very small league) is much better than the OIA, although the top teams of the OIA are on par or better than ILH.

    Correlation doesn’t equal causation.

  34. Searider86 September 5, 2016 7:55 am

RR4L01: I think the only thing your test proves is how old “RR4L” uncles are. Kahuku grads in their 20s were probably born during 1997. Current high school students right now were born around or after 9/11.

    1) incorrect use of punctuations

My little brother in the 3rd grade just turned in is writing assignment using myaccess and his piece has less errors than the piece you wrote that I just submitted through the myaccess writing program. And he is in the 3rd grade.

    What is your excuse? HAHAHA

@ I Love 88: Since you couldn’t answer and respond to why you were using words out of context, you had to turn to another subject…how to write properly. Who cares if punctuation marks aren’t used properly or all that other usage and spelling of words are perfect. Didn’t realize that this blog could end up receiving an english class. Since you’re the authority on how to write properly, be sure that you correct everyone with their improper use of punctuation marks, spelling and whatever the heck you think gave you the gift of how to write properly. Never gave it a thought of how everyone wrote their comments or opinion because the main thing was that majority of us got the gist of that persons thoughts. If you have the intelligence on how to decipher people’s comments without the proper use of grammar and punctuation marks, especially in Hawaii, that’s all that matters. Us locals write how we feel, and if you don’t like it, too bad because it ain’t gonna change just because you’re acting like an english school teacher, trying to act intelligent but have a mind of a childish person.

@I Love 88: Definitely I don’t need any advice especially from you and I don’t make excuses. I mean everything I say and if you can’t handle the grammar, get out. Just a note for you…this is not an english class and don’t have the time to edit for all the necessary proper use of grammar, especially when I’m not a perfect writer like you claim to be. All I can do is try my best but I guess the best is not good for you since you’re so perfect.

NORTH SHORE, you talk all this smack about how comments don’t make sense. Then you get exposed and now you are singing a different tune.

As for your writing, c’mon ma’am. This has nothing to do with editing. We are not talking about simple spelling mistakes. Your sentence structure is off. Your writing is sloppy and unorganized.

Why don’t you give me your address. I will send you some graphic organizers to help you get your writing in order. I will send you the Level 1 organizers typically used for grades K-2. I think the level 2 one my little brother uses might be too advanced for you.

Blaming your writing on editing, haha. You know you sat down for a long time and gave us your best. Ma’am, at least be proud of what you write even though it’s elementary at best.

I Love 88: I didn’t realize that ruffling your feathers and hitting that sensitive nerve would turn you to another subject by taking the attention away from you using a word out of context. Since you couldn’t justify your false statement, you had to make a mockery of my writing, grammar. spelling, punctuation marks and you still got the gist of my comments. Your grammar and writing from previous comments aren’t that perfect so it’s better that you review the books because like i’ve said, I could careless what you say about how I write because my opinions will be written the way I know best whether you approve or not. This forum is all about people writing about their opinions and not being graded on their perfect grammar. People who claim to be perfect are all full of it and they start to pull all kinds of trash from deep down from their pampers. Thanks but no thank you for your concerns about how I write because I will continue to voice my opinion the way I want to write it regardless if you’re the english writing guru.

I would look back at the old data, except I really dont believe the data that I would need to prove to you would be there. Come on, they don’t even list St. Louis’ weight on the team roster now days, I doubt they listed the players birthdays then.

If 5th year seniors were not the reason for the dominance, then why was that the sticking point that held up the championship era? Because they knew that they benifited from their self serving policy. If you have another reason as to why they did so well prior to the championship era, please share it with me.

This guy keeps writing more and more to crowd the cyberworld hoping that the more he writes, the more it will “camouflauge” his feeble attempt to write. Ma’am we can all see through it.

It’s okay, 88 and I forgive you. I hope and prey you continue to put your opinions. 88 and I need a good laugh daily. I should be paying you. You continue to put a smile on 88 and my face. I love trying to read your writing. I use your posts as model for my little brother on what poor pieces of writing looks like.

He said he would give you an ME for effort. But he would give you a WB for content.

On the serious note I would like to thank you. I have never laughed so hard since Dave Chapelle performed at the Blaisdell a couple years ago. Thanks Madam!

Hi Jason, 88 and I would like to comment. While St. Louis had a few 5th yer seniors, they weren’t that many. Joe Dano, the former VP during the 80-90’s told me that typically there were like 3-5 on a team if that many.

Some reasons St. Louis started to not be as dominant could be:
-Punahou started to recruit. This saturated the market for talent.
-St. Louis did not have the same amount of monetary resources available to recruit. As their football boosters got older and started to pass away, the younger stl alum didn’t invest as much money into the football program. That means they didn’t get the same talent.
-Cal Lee got lethargic. Do you know how challenging it is to coach for 20-25 years and winning around 13 straight titles in that time. It’s quite difficult to challenge yourself to be excellent after winning for so long.
-As the St. Louis enrollment went down and cost of operating the school went up, there was not as much monies put into athletics. Look around, not only football got worse, but boys basketball has fallen off the map from about 2005-present. When was the last time STL Basketball made states?

These are all possible reasons St. Louis stopped winning. To say a few 5th year seniors impacted his success without any empirical evidence would be negligent at it’s worse.

That would be the same kind of statement like Kahuku has older kids due to kids having to repeat grades due to poor academics. Or the kids who moved to Kahuku from American Samoa have inaccurate Birth Certificates since the birth data in American Samoa isn’t as accurate as in the US.

It’s just all speculation. FYI, most of these ideas are from 88. He and I are watching the Pacific sipping on some Shirley Temples. I love 88 a lot.
