Maui’s Rodney Figueroa will not return as football coach

Rodney Figueroa‘s three-year stint as the Maui High football coach is over.

Sabers athletic director Michael Ban said the school is looking to go in a different direction.

Figueroa went 11-19 overall and 9-15 in the MIL in three seasons at the helm. The Sabers went to the state tournament as the MIL’s Division I representative in his first two years before falling to a 1-8 campaign (0-8 in league) this year.

In those two state games, Maui lost to Hilo twice — 26-7 and 35-24.

“He was very dedicated and he worked very hard at trying to build the program and I thank him for that,” Ban said about Figueroa.

Ban is accepting applications for the vacant position until Nov. 15. After the interview process, the school expects to make a decision on a new hire in December.
