LIVE BLOG: Farrington 19, Kailua 13, F

Just a few minutes from kickoff here at Ticky Vasconcellos Stadium. The modem I use for the laptop is a bit cranky today. I’ll blog via my phone instead so please bear with me. It’ll be a step slower and have maybe a few more typos.

JV: Farrington 24, Kailua 19, final.

FIRST QUARTER
Nice opening match by the Govs but they botch a handoff exchange at the 10. Now it’s Kailua with a lengthy drive as the quarter ends. Already.

SECOND QUARTER
Govs punt at the end of their second series, but Kailua muffs the return and FAR recovers. Next play Challen Faamatau barrels through tacklers for a 13-yard TD run. FAR 7, KAI 0, 8:13.

Halftime
Each team had the ball for just three possessions in the first half. Kailua was terrific on third-down conversions: 5-for-7 but that included a sack late in the first half. The Surfriders actually got sacked on back-to-back plays.

Farrington actually had the ball for a fourth time in the final 41 seconds of the half, running out the clock.

Govs have been just a bit more willing to throw on first down than Kailua. They haven’t thrown those post routes much and Faamatau has been employed almost exclusively as a rusher: 13 carries for 112 yards. He’s been thrown to just once. An incomplete pass deep.

Kailua has done a very good job scouting the Govs. Stopping Faamatau is the queation. I wonder if Kailua will open up the passing game. Noah Auld is 8-for-11, 80 yards.

THIRD QUARTER
Surfriders will receive the kick.

Kailua finally scores. Second series of the second half. Reverse option – or bust – and pitch by Auld to RB Mark Lagazo for a 3-yard TD run. PAT kick wide left. FAR 7, KAI 6, 1:20.

FOURTH QUARTER
Govs drive 59 yards in eight plays. Bishop Rapoza with a 38-yard pass to the TE before Faamatau scores on a 1-yard run. PAT: Govs try a pass out of their muddle-huddle set. Incomplete. FAR 13, KAI 6, 11:01.

Kailua scores on a 5-yard pass from Auld to Koolaus Gaspar. Kick good. TIE 13-all, 8:39.

FAR answers. Faamatau breaks tackles for a 51-yard TD run. PAT misses right. FAR 19, KAI 13, 6:50.

Kailua drives to the FAR 19 as Auld hits five passes in a row, but a holding call way in the backfield makes it first and 31. Next play, Auld under pressure again and heaves a prayer that gets picked off by Ryota Kony. FAR ball, 3:06 left.

Under a minute to play. Faamatau picks up a first down with a third-down run of five yards. He finishes the game with 236 rushing yards.
